Description

M. V. B. SAUNDERS.
- WASHING-MACHINE.
No.175,507. P'atentefi March 28,1876
WITNESSES INVENTOR,
U ITED STATES QFFICE.
MARTIN VAN BUREN SAUNDERS, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
IMPRQVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,507, dated March 28, 1876; application filed December 24, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN VAN BUREN SAUNDERS, of Detroit. in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in WVashing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being bad to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 of the drawings is a representation of a front view of my washing-machine. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical sectional view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a detail view thereof.
This invention has relation to washing-machines; audit consists in the construction and novel arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
In the accompanying drawings, the letter A designates the standards of the machine, which are upright, and designed to rest on the bottom of the tub. B is the large upper roll, corrugated lengthwise, and above this roll is arranged a concave bar, 0, which is attached to the top of elongations a of the standards A, extending sufficiently above said roll to clear the same. This bar 0 is made rounding on its edges, and is designed to be strong enough to prevent the end pieces from springing and allowing the rollers to slip out of place. 1) indicates the lower roll, journaled in suitable bearings. Between these rolls and the upper one the clothes are designed to pass in the washing upon an endless belt, E, of crash or other suitable material, which serves to prevent the clothes from winding around the under rollers and being torn. The journals 1) of the upper roll are seated in suitable bearings in the upper portions of the standards A. The journal 0 ot' the lower rolls are seated in the bracket-clips E. Thcse'are metallic castings or plates provided with circular depressions d on the inside, in which the journals 0 are seated. These depressions are usually closed on the outside, as indicated at f in the drawings. Between the two the guide-studs g are arranged, extending outward and into the slots h in the standards, which slots are located in the lower part, and in which are arranged springs l, upon which the said studs 9 rest. At each side of the standards arms F of the said plates extend upward and outward, and terminate in lugs m, which extend inward on the outside of the standards, clasping the same. The upper parts of the arms F are provided with convex inside faces n, beveled upward and outward, which allows the plate to rock to either side without obstruction when the clothes are introduced between the upper and lower rolls. The plates or brackets E act also as guides to the clothes while passing between the rolls, and prevent them from becoming entangled or wedged at the ends of the under rolls. Being made with clips, extending or clasping partially around the end pieces, the brackets keep themselves, with the under rolls, constantly in place, supported on the spiral springs. End play is allowed by the construction of the arms, which are made sufficiently wide, and are provided at their upper portions with the beveled inside faces before mentioned.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The bracket E, having the journal-bearings d, and between the same the outwardlyextending guide-stud g, and extending outwardly from the same the arms F, having the beveled faces a and the clips m, substantially as specified.
2. The combination, with the slotted standards and springs, of the rocking brackets E, having the studs g. and clips m, substantially as specified;
In testimony that I claim the above I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
MARTIN VAN BUREN SAUNDERS.
W'itnesses:
J as. VAN BUREN, JASPER AXTELL.
