DETACHABLE BATTERY TERMINAL Filed Dec. 28, 1927 ATTORNE lf ateted rhpia ti, littl application tiled 'lheeember th, ltltt. aerial l lo. Wltdtit.
The present invention relates to battery terminals and has for its object to provide a terminal which may quickly and easily be attached to the binding post of a battery and which. will avoid breakage due to the attaching of the ordinary attachments now in use.
@ther objects are simplicity of construction, cheapness of manufacture, and edectiveness in operation. 7 A I Uther objects and advantages will appear from the following specification and will be set forth in the appended claim, and it do not wish to be limited in the scope of my in vention except as it shall be limited by said claim,
lln the drawings: a ltl ignre l is a plan view showing fragmentarily the top of a storage battery withmy invention attached to one of the binding posts thereof. I r
Figure? is a view showing my invention detached,,;from the battery,
Figures 3 and t are the gripping arms of my device. 1 Figure 5 is a view similar to lhigure 2 of a modified form of the invention, l
Referring to the drawings in detail, designates a storage battery having a binding post ii, and i2 designates the teinal attachment constituting the subject of my invention, This device comprises a P8111 of til members-l3 and it having comparatively.
straight portions l5 and i6 and semi-circular portions l7 and 18,:1l3ll6 former'lying in substantial parallelism with each other and the latter being adapted tov grip therebetween a binding post of a battery, as, shown'in Figure l. The lower end of one of the curved portions it is provided with an aperture l9 adapted to receive. therethroughfthe projection formedat the lower end of the. portion ldof the member it, lllhe aperture 19 i is, of 'suficient size compared with the projection 20 to permit of limited pivotal movepnenp of the memberltrelative to the menu 1 or do a Pivotally secured to the portion 15 of the member 13 are'linlts 21, said links being secured to the member 13 means of a pin 2% W passing through al g til in the apertures m the ends of the links and in the portion iii of the member 13: lhe opposite ends of thelinks are also apertured and connected with each other by a pin 23, upon which is rotatably mounted a cam 24.
The member it is provided in the region designated by the numeral 16 with a depression adapted to receive therein a rounded portion 26 of the cam when the same is in locking position. The cam is provided with 69 an elongated portion 27 having a finger grip 28 formed thereon, adapting the same for easy release when gripping the post of the battery The member 13 is provided at its upper end with a tubular portion 29 food by bending the metal thereof rearwardly into a cylinder with the adjacent edges thereof slightly spaced apart as shown in Figure 3. it conductor 30 is attached thereto by insert ing the end into the cylindrical portion of the member 29 and bending the members 31 thereof about the conductor.
in operation, when it is desired-to place the terminal on the binding post of a battery, it is merely necessary to turn the cam to the position as illustrated in Figure 2, allowing the ipping jaws l7 and 18 to spread apart at t eir upper end by a pivotal movement about the connection between the portion 20 t0 and the opposite apertured end of the member 13. When the device is placed over the binding post the cam is then moved to the position shown in Figure l, in which position it will remain until moved by an opert5 ator. This cam may be lifted either by mserting the finger under the lip at 28, or by use of a screw driver or knife blade, as may be found convenient. V
in bigureh l have illustrated aslightly lit modified form of the invention, which is similar in all respects to the other form above described, with the exception that the projection 20 and" the apertured end for receiv mg the same has been eliminated and the W "curved portions are integral so as to provide a continuous circular portion 32 for receivost ll.
t wil appear'from the fore oing that l v have contrived. a verysimple 'evice which mag be connected to the 'post of a batterg wit out danger of'breakmg the post an which is simple in its operation and cheap 'of manufacture.
Having described my invention, what I claim is: Y
A battery terminal device comprising means for gripping a battery post, cooperating straight portions formed with the 0st 10 grlpping means, links pivotally secure to one of the straight portions, conductor securing means formed with the last mentioned straight portion, a cam pivotally secured to the links and being engageable in a depres- 15 sion formed in the other straight portion for drawing the gripping means together, and said cam having a recess formed on its inner face adjacent its free end to. provide a finger grip whereby the cam can he moved to inop- 20 erative position to permit spreading of the post gripping means.
In testlmony whereof I aflix my signature.
DANIEL H. SCIILAEGEL.
