This invention relates to a device designed and adapted to be used for splicing wire, and which may be used advantageously for splicing the ends of fence line Wires.
The principal object of the invention is the provision of a device of the indicated character, embodying improved features of construction to enable the use thereof for carrying out wire splicing operations quickly 1 and easily, and which is especially useful for splicing the ends of fence wires closely arranged with respect to each other.
The nature of the invention and its dis tinguishing features and advantages will appear when the following specification is read in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a view illustrating a device constructed in accordance with the invention, and
also illustrating the manner in which it is used for splicing a. fence wire.
Fig. 2 is a side view of the device, a portion of one of the handle members being broken away to show certain features.
Fig. 3 is a front view of the device.
Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2, but showing the jaws of the device in opened relationship.
Referring now more particularly to the several views of the drawing it will be apparent that the device includes an element consisting of a handle member 10 and head or jaw 11 at one end thereof. The jaw 11 has a transverse groove 12. The handle member 10 has a slot 13, and a. pair of lugs 14.
A second handle member 15 is pivotally connected with the handle member 10, and this is accomplished by the employment of a pivot pin 16 which is supported by the lugs 14 and which extends through the upper end of the handle member 15. The handle member 15 has a stop 17 engageable with a portion of the handle member 10 to limit the movement of the handle member 15 toward the handle member 10. A separate jaw member 18 fits in the slot 13 in the handle member 10. Plates 19 are secured to the member 18 by rivets or like fastening elements 20, and said plates 19 are disposed respectively on opposite sides of the member 18.

on the handle member 10; that the 21 on said member 18 will therefore be movable into and out of cooperative relation to the jaw 11: and that by providing the jaws 11 and 21 with the grooves 12 and 22, it is possible to engage the device with a line wire, so that the device may be turned on said line wire,
with the wire serving as anaxis.
In order to give movement to the jaw member 18 in one direction to bring its jaw 21 into eooperative relation to the aw 11 there is provided means which consists of a pin 23 on the lower end of the member 18, and a spring 24 which encircles the pin 23, and said spring 24 having one end thereof in engagement with the lower end of the member 18, and the opposite end thereof being disposed in a recess in the bottom wall of the slot 13.
In order to effect the movement of the jaw member 18 so as to retract its jaw 21 out of cooperative relation to the jaw 11, or in other words to an opened position, as shown in Fig. 4, there is provided means consisting of a cam 25 on the pivoted end of the handle member 15, and spaced shoulders 26 and 27 on the jaw member 18 with which said cam 25 coacts. It will now be apparent that when the handle member 15 is moved on its pivot 16 away from the handle member 10, that the cam 25 will bear on the shoulder 27, causing th jaw member 18 to move downwardly against the action ofthe spring 24, and thus move the jaw 21 out-of cooperative relation to the jaw 11 on the handle member 10. It will be possible to insert a line wire, designated 28 in Fig. 1 of the drawing, between the aws 11 and 21. \Vhen the handle member 15 is relee sed, the spring 24 will come into play and impart upward movement to the member 18 and bring its jaw 21 into cooperative relation to the jaw 11. In this manner the device will be turnably engaged with the line wire 28. By grasping both handle members 10 and 15 with one hand the device may be turned on the wire, the latter serving as an aXis therefor.
It is to be understood that the pin 23 and spring 24 may be omitted, in which case the cam 25 acting on the shoulder 26 will serve to move the jaw member 18 to the closed or wire engaging position in response to the movement of the handle member 15 toward the handle member 10.
In order to wrap, wind, or twist the terminal or end of a line wire to be spliced to the meeting or overlapping end of the companion line wire, there is provided meanspresently to be described. The jaws 11 and'21 have formed integral therewith a plurality of lugs 29. A circumferential series of the lugs 29 is arranged on the aws on the opposite sides thereof. The lugs are arranged radially with respect to the axis on which the device turns in spaced relationship. Each lug 29 has a groove 30. It will now be understood that the device constructed in the manner hereinabove described enables the performance, of the following functions, namely; turning of the device around on a line wire when the jaws thereof are engaged with said wire, with the handle members 10 and 15, while either one of the lugs 29 is engaged with a terminal of a companion line wire, for the purpose of wrapping winding or twisting said terminal on the line wire on which the device turns as shown most clearlyin Fig. 1. It will be apparent that the bearing surfaces provided by the grooves 12 and 22 in the jaws ll and 21 prevent the device from tipping sidewise. It will also be apparent that the device may be used in the manner of a ratchet, that is to say, the device may be swung back and forth when engaged with a line wire, in which case either one of the lugs 29 may be engaged with the terminal to be wrapped or Wound to complete the splicing operation. This is particularly desirable in cases where fence wires for instance are arranged closely to each other, and therefore preventing the device from being swung completely around the line wire. It will also be apparent that by providing two sets of lugs 29 the device may be used reversely in order to produce the desired reverse twists of the terminals.
It is to be understood that the invention is not restricted to the precise arrangement of parts shown and described, as details of construction may be modified and rearranged without departing from the spirit of the in vention, the scope of which is limited only by the terms of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described com- 7 to said first handle member, a separate 'aw member having guided movement on said rst handle member and the jaw on said jaw member thus being movable into and out of co operative relation to said first jaw, said jaws when brought into cooperative relation being adapted to engage a line wire to enable the swinging of the device around on said wire, coacting means on said second handle member and jaw member for effecting the movement of the jaw member to move the jaw of the latter into and out of cooperative relation to said first jaw, and wire terminal engaging means on one of said jaws adapted to engage a wire terminal for the purpose of wrapping the same around said line wire when the device is swung about the latter.
2. A device as defined in claim 1, wherein the wire terminal engaging means consists of grooved lugs arranged in spaced relation; radially on said jaws.
3. A device as defined in claim 1, wherein the wire terminal engaging means consists of grooved lugs arranged in spaced relation radially on opposite sides of said jaws.
4. In a device of the character described, the combination of a jaw and handle in one piece, a second handle pivotally connected with the first handle, a separate aw movable on the first handle into and out of cooperative relation to the said first jaw, said jaws being adapted to turnably engage a line wire when brought into cooperative relation, a cam on said second handle for giving movement to said separate aw into cooperative relation to, the first jaw to engage a line wire by actuating both handles, and wire terminal engaging means on said aws, to enable the performance of the following functions, namely; turning of the device around on the line wire with- SIDNEY J.
