IMPROVEMENT IN PRIVV-SEATS.

To all whom it may concern: I

Be it known that I, BRANCH TANNER, of Gheneyville,in the parish of Rapides and State of Louisiana, have invented a new and Improved Privy-Seat, of which the following is a specification:

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved privy-seat, shown in position to be used as water-closet; and Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same with seat in position for use.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

The object of this invention is to provide an improved privy-seat that is adapted mainly for public use in hotels, ferry-houses, depots, urinals, 850., and also for private purposes, as it prevents efiectually the soiling of the same, and furnishes a comfortable seat as well as a water-closet.

The invention consists of an oscillating seat with swinging front and rear aprons, of which the front apron is used for watercloset purposes when the seat is swung back below a stationary inclined cover at the rear.

In the drawing, A represents the casing of my improved privy-seat, which has fixed sides that support on interior strips a the semicircular or arc-shaped side extensions b of the seat B, which is swung by a lever-handle, (J, pivoted and guided at the outside of the casing, either back under an inclined stationary cover, D, that is applied by strong arms to the casing, or forward against a slightly-inclined front wall of the casing A. The oscillating motion of the seat on the supporting side strips a is regulated and governed by a trunnion, d, at the rear part of the seat, which trunnion is guided in arc-shaped grooves or recesses d of the sides of the casing. The trunnion and grooves hold the seat securely in forward and backward position. To the front and rear walls of the seat are hinged movable aprons E, of which the front apron is shaped to form a water-closet, and supported, when the seat is thrown back, under the cover by the side strips 0. in inclined position, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to admit the use of the privy for urinating purposes merely.

When the seat is thrown forward by the lever, the seat will be supported in slightlyincli'ned position on the front part of the easing to be thus conveniently used. The rear apron slides in a slot, e, of a lateral braceboard of the casing, and guards the rear part of the same when the seat is-in forward position. The front apron swings out of the way, as shown in Fig. 2, when the seat is thrown forward. As soon as the seat is released, it falls back under the cover out of the way, and carries the front apron into inclined position, furnishing thus a reliable, clean, and com fortable device for the purpose for which it is designed.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. A privy-seat, constructed of a stationary I casing, rear cover, and oscillating seat, with swinging front and rear aprons, substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

2. The combination of the semicircular side parts of the seat with the supporting strips, to move thereon, as set forth.

3. The seat, having rear trunnions in combination with the arc-shaped guide-grooves of the casing, to control oscillating motion of seat, as set forth.

4. The swinging front apron, in combination with the side strips of the casing, to hold apron in inclined position when seat is thrown back, for the purpose set forth.

5. The combination of oscillating seat withstationary cover and rear apron to cover seatframe, substantially as set forth.
