IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTING ATTACHMENTS FOR ALARM-CLQCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,344, dated March 28, 1876; application filed February 26, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK FIsoHLEIN, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Alarm-Clock and Lighter, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a front elevation of my improved alarm-clock and lighter; and Fig. 2, a vertical transverse section of the same on the line 0 c, Fig. 1.

My invention relates to a combination of an alarm-clock with a device for lighting simultaneously with the release of the alarm a can- (lle or lamp; and it consists of the connection of the alarm mechanism of a clock-train, by a fulcrumed and spring-acted hook-lever, with the hook-arm of a spring'acted friction-lever, that, on its release, ignites a match secured by suitable supporting and gage devices above the candle or lamp, so as to light the same simultaneously with the release of the alarm.
In the drawing, A represents a clock-train of any approved construction, and A the cus tomary mechanism for releasing the alarm at the appointed time. The friction-lever O carries a convex plate, 1], with rasp-cut or other frictional surface, that is passed rapidly over the head of a match supported above the candle, lamp, or other lighting device D, so as to ignite the match by the friction therewith.

, The candle socket or lamp-support D is provided with an upward-extending arm, E, that is perforated for the insertion of the match, which is rigidly secured thereto by a pivoted eccentric cam or other clamping device, f.
A second forward-extending arm, E, with forked end branching out from arm E, supports the middle part of the match, and retains it in inclined position above the light, to produce the lighting of the same as soon as it is ignited by the friction with the lever G.
A sliding gage, F, of the candle-socket D serves, when raised, to define the exact position of the head of the match, so as to secure positively the contact of the same with the friction-plate and produce the ignition of the match in perfectly reliable manner. The gage F is slid back again when the match is set, to be out of the way for the action of the friction-lever.
When the alarm mechanism of the clock is set to the appointed hour at which the alarm is desired to be given, the friction-lever O is carried over from its point of rest on the cushion until the hook end of the alarm-connecting lever'rod B engages the recessed arm 0 of the friction-lever. The match is then inserted into the supporting-arm, set by the gage to the exact position required, and then fastened by the cam. The gage is then carried out of the way and the lighting mechanism is ready for action. As soon as the clock releases the alarm mechanism the frictionlever is disengaged from the hooklever, thrown, by the action of its spring, past the match-head, so that its friction-plate ignites the same and lights the candle. A receptacle for matches may be arranged in connection with the lighting mechanism, and the whole finished in a neat style, to form a useful and ornamental attachment to the clock.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination, with clock and alarm mechanism, of the lever B, connected at its lower end with alarm A, and at its upper hook-shaped end with the recessed arm of a swinging friction spring-lever, 0, arranged substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the supporting and fastening devices of the candle-socket with a sliding gage, for setting the match into exact position to be ignited on the release of the friction-lever, substantially as described.
