My invention relates to molding flasks and' the principal object of my invention is to provide a new molding flask improved particularly in the construction of the sand retaining means.
In the drawings accompanying this specifiv cation and forming a part of this application I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume.

This application is a continuation in part of my copending application Serial Number The flask shown herein comprises a cope section and a drag section 3l, the cope section 30 comprising side members 32 and end members 33 each provided at each end with a 25 recess 34 arranged to cooperate with thev corresponding` .recess of the adjacent member to form an aperture into which may be cast a retaining lugl35 effective to hold the two members yfirmly and fixedly rigidly assembled, the drag section 31 being similarly formed, and the construction being set forth in moredetail in my application for mold containers filed concurrently herewith;
Pivoted to the lower face 36 of each side f member 32 of the lcope 30, by means of two pivot screws 37V positioned adjacent the center of the side member 32 and secured to the side member 32, are a pair of sand strips 38 Areceiving the pivot screws 37 through apertures'39, and movable in recesses 40 in the lower face 36 ofthe side member 32 between the position illustrated at the leftin ligure 3 wherein the strips 38 Vare withdrawn flush with the' inner surface of the flask andtherefore inactive, and the position illustrated at the right in figure 3 wherein the sandstrips 38 project beyond the inner surface of the flask and are therefore effective to support'v the sand within the cope section 30;
Throughout this movement the sand strips 38 are supported by the heads of the pivot screws 37 and also by the heads of screws 41 which .depend from and are fixed to the side members 32`and extend through slots 42 in the sand strips 38 elongated to permit this movement but effective, in cooperation with the screws 41, to limit the movement of thesand strips 38 to between the two positions illustrated.
vWith this construction I find it convenient to secure the pivot screws'37 to the side members 32 by screwing the pivot screws 37 into tapped holes 43 in the side members 32, and to secure the holdingscrews'41 in position on the side members 32 by inserting them in nuts 44 cast into the, flask section securing lugsV 35. Under these circumstances, however,it is extremely difficult to accurately position these nuts 44 and I therefore findit advisable to provide'for some variation in the position of these nuts 44 by elongating the pivot apertures 39 to vpermit longitudinal adjustment of the sand strips`38 commensurate with the variation in positioning of each holding screw nut 44. 75
It will be understood .by those skilled in thefart that in the event I desire additional support for the cope section of the mold I may'duplicate upon the end members 3,3 of the cope section 30 'the sand strip means herein shownv as applied only to the side members 32 of the cope section 30. i
g It will be apparent that the sand strips herein illustratedmproject into the mold the greatest extent at the corners where the casting is normally farthest 'removed from the exterior of the mold, andato the vleast degree at the4 centers of the sides where thel casting is normally least removed from the exterior of the mold, and it. will therefore be obvious that the strips herein illustrated support the cope section of the mold with 'the minimum weakening thereof. Y r y l From the above description it will be obvious to those skilled in the art that I have provided new and improved sand strip means. At the. same time, it will also be obvious to those skilled in the art' that the particular embodiment of my invention herein shown and described maybe variously changed and '100 modified Without departing from the spirit of my invention or sacrificing the advantages thereof.
It will therefore be understood that the disclosure herein is illustrative only and that my invention is not limited thereto.
I claim:
l. A flask comprising a polygonalrshell having sand strip means on certain sides thereof each comprising means arranged, when advanced into the mold space, to extend into said space to a greater extent adjacent the ends of the side than centrally of said side.
2. A flask comprising apolygonal shell having sand strip` means on certain sides thereof each comprising two sand strips pivoted on vertical pivot means centrally of the side of the flask and extending therefrom in opposite directions along said side and thus arranged, when advanced into the mold space, to extend into said space to a greater extent adjacent the ends ofthe side than centrally of said side.
3. Sand strip means for a flask comprising a sand strip, pivot means connecting said sand'strip to said fiask to permit said sand` strip to be swung in a horizintal plane about a vertical `pivot into and out of operative position, arcuate guiding means effective to connect said sand strip to said flask remote fromsaid pivotmeans While permitting such swinging of said sand strip, said pivot means being loose to accommodate for variations in f said arcuate guiding means or in the spacing of said arcuate guiding means from said pivot means.
