IMPROVEMENT IN GUARDS FOR SHAPING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,280, dated March '28, 1876; application filed August 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, MARQUARD HANSEN, of San Francisco city and county, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Guards for Shaping-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are sufficient to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention without further invention or experiment.
The object of my invention is to provide a fender or guard for protecting the hands of workmen from being cut or mutilated by the shaping-machines which are used for shaping and trimming pieces of wood.
These machines consist of two or more horizontal blades, secured to an upright shaft just above a table or bench, and rotated at a high rate of speed, so that it is often impossible to distinguish the blades or cutters; consequently, workmen are frequently injured or maimed by bringing their hands in contact with them.
My invention relates to a guard or fender, which can be adjusted so as to permit the workman to use the machine without danger of bringing his hand in contact with the cutters.
In order to more fully explain my invention, reference is had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of'my device.
Let A represent the table or bench, and B the upright shaft, which passes upward through the table and extends a short distance above it. 0 O are the shaper knives or blades, which are secured horizontally to the shaft B an inch or two above the top of the table, and which are rotated at a high rate of speed in order to cause them to cut or trim the edges of blocks or pieces of wood, which are moved against their cutting or outer edges. In the upper face of the table A, at a proper or suitable distance from the shaft B, I sink a curved metallic plate, D, so that the shaft B will be the center of the curve and, therefore, equidistant from every part of it. In this plate I bore two or more holes, e e e, at suitable points, and these holes I tap with screw-threads. F is a post, the lower end of which is formed into a screw, which will fit in either of the holes 0 e. G is a horizontal bar, one end of which is provided with a hole of sufficient size to allow it to slip down upon the post F and be fixed at any desired point by a set-screw, h, while the other end is formed into a ring, I, which slips down over the upright shaft B. A fender band or guard, J, is secured to this horizontal bar G, so as to encircle the shaft B and cutting-blades. This band is adjustable back or forth by being attached to the bar G in the manner of a slide, so that part of its circumference which is opposite the slide can be moved to or from the rotating cutters, and thus not only gage the block of wood to be trimmed, but also protect the hands of the workmen from being cut by the cutters. This band could be fixed, if desired, but I prefer to make it adjustable. This band can be raised or lowered by raising and lowering the bar G on the post F, and thus gage the height of the band. Should the post F be in the way of the workman, it can be shifted to a different hole, 0, and thus prevent the device from interfering with the work. I thus provide a simple and complete gage and guard, which will effectually protect the hands of workmen from this heretofore dangerous machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patcut, is-
In combination with a shaping-machine, the post F, adjustable bar G, with its ring I, and the guard or fender-band J, substantially as and for the purpose described.
