UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GOTTFRIED GRILL, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
CIRCULAR-SAW GUARD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 245,816, dated August 16, 1881.
7 Application filed June 17,1881. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GOTTFRIED GRILL, of Baltimore city, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Circular-Saw Guards and I hereby declare the same to be fully, clearly, and exactly described as follows, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device; Fig. 2, a sectional view on the line 00 w of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is an elevation of the wheel for opening the kerf.
The object of my invention is to furnish a guard to prevent injury to the operator in using a circular saw, whether arising from cutting of the hands by the saw or from the lumber being thrown up by the farther or rising edge of the saw; and my said invention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the drawings, A is a frame made fast to the ceiling above the saw; and B is a bar which passes through a slot in the frame, and is secured at any desired elevation bya set-screw, g.
D is a cross-head secured to the bar B, and to it are hinged at d braces (J O, that are secured by clamping-screws at either-side of the frame A, as shown.
To the lower end of the bar B is pivoted at b a pair of arms, a a, curved to conform to the periphery of the saw, and having sides which inclose the saw-teeth. In the arms a a telescope supplemental arms 0 0, also arranged to inclose the saw-teeth, which arms are clamped by set-screws Z Z. The arm 0 projects in the plane of the saw, constituting a presser-foot, 7', to hold down the lumber, and in slots h in its end is mounted a sharp-edged wheel, 1, arranged to enter and spread the saw-kerf.
' To the arms a a are attached bars 6 e, curved in the are of a circle about the pivot b, which arms pass through a slot in the bar B and are secured by a set-screw, f.
It will thus be seen that the arms a. a,being pivoted to the bar B and having extensible arms 0 c, are adapted to fit upon saws of various sizes, and the vertical adjustment of the bar B meets any requirement arising from the raising or lowering of the saw with reference to the table.
The presser-footj holds down the lumber at the exit side of the saw and obviates all danger of the lumber being carried up by the saw, which danger is greatly lessened, independent of the presser-foot, by the wheel 2'.
The device may readily be applied to circular saws already in use, and will prevent many injuries which without it are very liable to ocour.
The wheel 41 may be readily removed from the slot h, when desired, and a thinner or thicker one inserted, as may be required.
What I claim is- In combination with the bar B, the arms a a pivoted to its lower end, and extensible arms 0 c, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In combination with the bar B and arms a a pivoted to its lower end, the extensible arms 0 c, thelatter having a presser-t'oot,j, as set forth.
3. In combination with the bar B, the arms arms a. a o c, presser-footj, and wheel 6, as set forth.
4. In combination with the bar B, having pivoted arms 0, the arms a to, bars c,set-screw f, and extensible arms 0 c, havingpresser-foot j and wheel '5, as set forth.
GOTTFRIED GRILL.
