Description

R. C. CHAPMAN DISPLAY CABINET April 1, 1930.
Filed Feb. 25, 192} Q I anb wnto'c I Patented Apr. 1, 1930 v uN ien STATES inane ROMAINE CLARK CHAPMAN, CHESHIRE, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO SCOVILL M MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT DISPLAY CABINET Application filed February 25, 1928. Serial No.'256,875.
This invention relates to certain improvements in display stands or cases, and hasbeen particularly designed for cases for displaying articlesin store windows and the like It is'the especial object of the'present 1nvention to provide a display case of strong and rigid construction and of attractlve appearance, particularly adapted for hold ng articles of different sizes in an erect-position '10 and other articles in a flatposition, the front of the case being provided with viewlng apertures' through which the articles in the case are visible an'd'may be readily removed for sale.
Afurther object of the invention is to provide a display case of 1 novel' construction which can be easily and quickly assembled and will offer a wide range for holding articles of different sizes,:s'uch as pin packages 'Z iand safety pins mounted on cards. I f
With these anl other ob ects not-specifically referredto in view, .theinvention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements .and combinations which will be described in a connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features pointed out in-the claims annexed hereto. j
Inthese drawings 1 I Figure 1 isa perspective view 'of the com- 732 plete case showing theway in. which articles 23 on the line 38 of Figure 1;
Figure 4c is a longitudinal sectional view taken on the line 4-4'0f Figure :1; Figure 5 is a plan View of a blank from which one part of the case is made;
Figure 6 is a planiview of a blank from which themain body of the case is made, and Figure 7 is a plan view of a blank from which another part of the box is made. 1 Referring now to these drawings, the case and its parts are preferably made of cardboard and, as shown in detail, the main portion oft he case includes a bottom 1 and a front 2 and aback 3. "In Figure 6 the blank from which this part of the case is made is 1 I shown. This blank is cut to form the back 3 with Side wings i, 5 and what Will be the front portion2 is cut to form side wingsfi, 7, the blank being notched, asindicated at 8, oneach side to form the bottom 1. The front portion 2 of the blank isprovided with a deep notch 9 terminating in a narrow ledge 10 and, on each side, the deep notch is formed with cutouts 11, 12. The notch 9 and the cutouts 11, 12 form viewing openings. This blank is formed up on the creased lines,'indi-' 7 6 cated at 12 in Figure 6, to form the body, and the wings 4t, 5 are then bent on th'e creased lines 13 inwardly toward the front,
and the wings 6, 7 are bent on the creased linesl it toward theback and overlapping on T155 the wings at, 5, being secured thereto by pasteor in any other suitable way. 7
On each side of the opening 9 ofthe front are formed flanges 15, 16 and secured to the inside of these flanges is what may be termed F7?!" a supplemental front piece, the blank vfor which is shown in Figure 7." This supple' mental front pieoe inclu'desga body portionor front 17, and the blank is creased at 18 to:
form end flanges 19. The blank is further 91 creased at 20 to form tabs 21.
In assembling'the supplemental front piece and the body, the blank is bent on the creased lines 18 to form the'ends 19, these ends-acting to space the supplemental front piece rear-"E8 wardly of the front piece of the main body, and the side tabs 21 are then bent inwardly toward each other and at right angles to the ends 19, and these bent-in tabs are secured by paste or in other suitable manner to 'the 1 flanges 15, 16 of the main'body portionbefore referred to. 1 Y
The supplemental front piece 17 is of sufficient width to hold articles laid flatwis'e, as for instance packages of pins, marked 22 in 590 Figure 1, and the tabs 21 and the flanges 15,
.16 of these two parts of the case together with the raised portion 10 of the main front piece of the case act to hold these pin packages in position, but at thesaine time permit them to be readily removed.
In the best constructions, separate compartments are provided at eachend 0f the case for containing articles, such as safety pin cards v23, which may be viewed through 1 the openings 11, 12 in the front of the'body piece, and preferably for attractiveness in appearance these compartments are shallower than the box. These compartments may be formed in various ways, but in the particular construction illustrated they will be so formed as to stiffen the wings 4:, 5, 6 and 7 of the body piece before referred to. A blank for forming one of these compartmentsis shown in Figure 5. This blank is formed so as to produce, when folded, a square having a front 24 and sides 25, 26 and 27. One of these sides, as side 2?, is provided with a tab 28 and the blank is creased, as at 29, so thatit can be folded to this shape. The front 24 of this blank is further provided with a viewing .opening 30 which registers with the openings 11, .12 in the front of the main body piece. The side 26 may be secured, as by paste, to the wings 4, 5, thus forming a triple th ckness of materialand consequently a very rigid structure.- The tab 28 of the side 27 may be bent to overlap onto the side 25 and the side 25 secured by paste against the back 3 of the body 1. The front 24: may be pasted against the front piece 2 of the main body member and the side 27 may be secured by paste to the end piece 19 of the supplemental front piece 17.v Thus a strong, rigid structure is provided. The partition members from the blank shown in Figure 5 are thus secured in each end of the case. Preferably, these are spaced-from the bottom of the case so as to cause articles in the partition to project above the case top. This may be donerin a simple way by providing stops formed by bending up a piece of cardboard marked 81, as shown inFigure 2, these stops also forming the bottom of the partition members.
It will be observed that the supplemental front piece 17 is spaced from the back 8 and this space may be utilized for holding smaller cards of safety pins 82, a block 38 being preferably inserted in the space to elevate the articles carried therein and form the bottom of compartments located in this space. These compartments may be conveniently formed by inserting a center member 35 formed by suitably bending up a piece of cardboard into a square, and this may be secured by paste to the back 3 and supplemental front piece 17, this construction providing three compartments 316, 37 and 38 for holding the smaller pincards 32.
' It will'be seen with the construction described that a very firm, rigid and attractive display case has been made for such articles as safety pin cards and for the ordinary long trative and that other articles may be displayed within the invention.
While the case as described is a preferred form, it will be understood that certain changes and variations may be made in the particular construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is: p 7 v v 1. A display case or stand comprising a main body piece formed to provide a bottom, front, and back, with wings'forming the ends of the case and secured between the front and back, cutouts in the front, a supplmental front piece inset from the main front piece and forming an article holding compartment, narrower article holding compartments at each side of the supplemental front piece, and a compartment between the supplemental front piece and the back of the stand.
