Patented Mar. 25, 1930 UNITED STATES PATlazN'r* OFFICE,
ERNST .'IOHANNSSEN, or HAMBURG, GERMANY, AssIGNOR To soHArEn a FIEDEL- MEIER, or HAMBURG, GERMANY, A CORPORATION OFGEBMALNY CLOSURE FOR BOTTLES AND JARS Application led December 23, 1927, Serial No. 242,177, and in Germany March 4, 1927.
My invention relates to improvements in closures for bottles and jars, androne of the I. objects of the improvements is to provide a aerated liquids when filling the same into the bottle or jar is prevented. Further, an object of the improvements is to provide a closure in which the fastening means are adjustable. With these and other objects in view my invention consists in the matters to be described hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
For the purpose of explaining the invention two examples embodying the same have been shown in the accompanying drawings in which the same letters of reference have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In said drawings,
Fig. 1, is a sectional elevation showing the closure, and
Fig. 2, is a sectional elevation showing a modification of the fastening means.
In the example shown in Fig. 1 the bottle or jar 1 is adapted to be closed by means of a lid 2 formed with upwardly and downwardly extending tubular studs 3 and 4 and carrying a packing ring 5 of rubber or the like. The upper tubular stud 4 is externally screwi threaded and it has a clamping lever 6 formed with an internally screw-threaded hub 7 screwing thereon. For fixing the said clamping lever in position a ring 8 is mounted ina groove 9 of the bottle neck, and at one end the said ring is formed with an eye 10 engaged by an elongated ring- 11, the said ring being adapted to be placed on the rear end of' the lever 6 and into a groove 12 thereof thus providing a hinge for the lever 6. On a second eye 13 formed on the ring 8 a lever 14 is mounted which is formed with an eye 15 carrying an elongated clamping ring 16, the said clamping ring being adapted for engagement with the hook-shaped front end 17 of 'the lever 6.,r By placing the ring 16 on the hook-shaped end 17 and afterwards rocking the lever 14 downwardly the closure is clamped on the bottle or 1' ar, as is known in the art. For adapting the closure and the clamping means thereof to jars or bottles of different form, or for compensating differences in the thickness of the rubber ring 5 the lever 6 canbe screwed upwardly and downwardly on the stud 4, so that a tight packing is insured.
The tubular stud 4 is provided at its top end with a transverse wall 18, and into a transverse bore 19 thereof' a faucet 2O is screwed. The stud 3 is provided with a downwardly extending nipple 21, and to the 'said nipple the top end of a rubber tube or pipe 22 is fixed, and the length of the said pipe or tube is such that it extends to the bottom of the jar or bottle.
The tubular stud 4 is made integral with a tubular member 23, and to the top of the'said tubular member the externally screw-threaded hub 24 of a piston 25 is screwed to the top face of which a packing ring 26 having an upwardly` directed flange 27 is fixed by means of a disk 28 screwing on a nipple 29 of the piston. On the tubular member 23 a cylinder 30 is movable` which encloses the piston 25 and the packing disk 26, 27 thereof, and which is closed by a lid 31 screwing on thev top end thereof. Between the said lid and the top face of the disk 28 a coiled spring 32 is located, which tends to force the cylinder 30 upwardly. The piston 24 is provided with an axial bore 33, and it is made integral with a downwardly extending nipple 34 provided with a check valve which as shown is in the form of a rubber tube 35 formed with a tapering wall.
The studs 3 and 4 are formed with a longitudinal bore 36 adapted to connect the tubular member 23 with the bottle carrying the closure, and the said bore is adapted to be closed by means of a screw 37 carrying a milled head 38.
The closure is used as follows:
The closure is placed on the bottle or jar, and the lever 6 is screwed upwardly or downwardly into the proper position so that when hanging the rings 11 and 16 on the same and rocking the lever 14 downwardly, it fits tightly on the bottle. N ow the screw 38 is closed, and the faucet 20 is connected by a rubber vlo tube with the supply of the liquid. The faucet is opened, and the liquid flows into the jar 1. Thus the air within the jar 1 is compressed, and i'inally'the pressure of the said air is such that the liquid does not flow any more into the jar. Now the screw 38 is slightly screwed. backwardly so that the air within the jar slightly escapes upwardly. Thus the iow of the liquid is continued, and when the jar is filled the screw 37 is again screwed inwardly thus closing the bore 36. Finally the faucet is closed and the rubber tube removed from the jar.-
It will be understood that in case of aerated liquids only a small amount of the gas escapes from the liquid. i
For dispensing the liquid from the jar the faucet 20 is opened, the bore 36 being still closed by the screw 37. The liquid is forced from the jar 1 by the pressure of the gas conl lined therein, and when the said pressure has of the fastener of the closure.
of the packing disk 26.
In Fig. 2 I have shown a modification As shown, the elongated ring 11 is connected to an eye 40 of the lever 6.
I claim:
1. A closure for receptacles, comprising a disk, a member adjustable on said disk in axial direction and formed with two passages, clamping means adapted for engagement withsaid member and for clamping the disk to the receptacle, a tube member extending downwardly from one of said passages,l
a faucet connected with the passage communicating with said tube, a tubular extension on said disk out of connection with said passage communicating with said tube and connected with the other passage, a cylinder and piston mounted on said tubular extension, a check valve intermediate said cylinder and tubular extension, and means for closin the passage communicating with said tubu ar extension.
2. A closure for receptacles, comprising a disk, a member adjustable on' said disk in axial direction and formed with two passages, clamping means adapted for engagement with` said member and for clamping the disk to the receptacle, a tube member extending downwardly from one of said passages, a faucet connected with the passage communicating with said tube, a tubular exand connected with the other passage, a bore between the other passage and the open air adapted to be closed ,by means of a screw, a cylinder and piston mounted on said tubular extension, a check valve intermediate said cylinder and tubular extension, and means for closing the passage communicating with saidf tubular extension.
3. A closure for receptacles, comprising av for closing the passage communicating with said tubular extension.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aliix my signature.
ERNST J OHANNSSEN.
