BEVERAGE PUMP.
Application filed August 19, 1927. Serial No. 214,029.-
g This invention relates to improvements in beverage pumps of the type that is applicable to bottles and similar vessels from which beverage is dispensed, and especially those beverages of such effervescent nature that air pressure within the container is required to be maintained to keep the beverage in proper condition for use.
The objects of the improvements are to afford a convenient portable appliance that may be applied readily to a vessel containing the beverage to be dispensed, such as a bottle; and to so construct the device that leakage from the vessel of the beverage, or the air during suspended operation, will be prevented.
These objects are accomplished by the construction illustrated inv the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a. structure embodying the invention applied to a bottle neck, portions thereof being in section;
Fig. 2 is a plan view projected from Fig. 1, a portion being broken away; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the appliance in connection with the bottle, drawn upon a reduced scale.
The characters appearing in the description refer to parts shown in the drawings and designated thereon by corresponding characters.
The invention comprises a head 1 having chambers 2 and 3 alined therein and separated by a perforated partition 4. A discharge spout 5 is secured in the front of the head and has communication with the chamber 2 therein. In the opposite side of the head 1 is secured an air inlet fixture 6 that has communication through a duct 7 with an annular recess 8 made in the lower part of the head. The fixture 6 has mounted therein a valve 9 and a rubber valve seat 10 by which the air passageway 11 in the fixture 6 is hermetically closed. The fixture 6 has also attached thereto an air supply means which may be of any usual construction such as one having a bulb 12 provided with inlet and outlet valves 13 and 1 1, with a hose connection 15 between the latter valve and the fixture 6 by which air under pressure is supplied to the passage-way 11 in the fixture.
In the head 1 is positioned a centrally perforated sustaining disc 16 that bears against an annular shoulder 17 in said head at the bottom of the chamber 2, and beneath said plate is positioned a centrally perforated rubber valve seat 18. In the chamber-3, at
the bottom thereof and resting upon the par t1t1on 4 is a centrally perforated rubber packing disc 19, upon the top of which bears acentrally erforated metallic plate 20. A valve 21 is QlSPOSQtl with its stem extending upwardly through the valve seat 18, sustaining disc 16, perforated partition l, packing disc 19 and plate 20, and has secured upon its upper end a push button 22 that has a sleeve 23 that projects downwardly into the chamber '3 of said head, there being a. compression spring 24 disposed in said chamber, concentric with the stem of the valve 21, that bears at one end against the disc 20 and at its opposite end against the push button, so that the head 25 of said valve is held seated thereby against the lower end of the valve seat 18.
A tubular post 26 having a valve chamber 27 in its upper end is secured in the lower end of the head 1 so that the top of said post bears against the valve seat 18 and clamps the same in place. A discharge tube 28 extends upwardly through the post and is secured therein so as to have communication at its top with the valve chamber 27, there being an annular space 29 within said post surrounding the discharge tube beneath the upper portion thereof. The post also has a passage-way 30 that affords communication between the annular space 29 in the post and the recess 8 in the head, whereby communication between the passage-way 11 in the fixture 6 and the space 29 in the post is established.
Upon the post 26 is mounted a thumb-nut 31 that has threaded relation therewith that bears downwardly against an annular collar 32 that loosely surrounds said post, and an annular rubber stopper 33 is secured upon the lower portion of said post in concentric relation therewith and is clamped between the collar 32 and a washer 34 that is fixed upon the lower end of the post by means of a threaded nut 35. The stopper 33 is of a size suited to be applied in the neck 36 of a. bottle 37, which stopper is tightened in the neck when pressure is applied thereto by turning the thumb-nut 31 upon the post whereby the stopper is compressed endwise and thereby caused to expand laterally in the neck.
In utilizing the invention the device is mounted upon the bottle containing the beverage to be dispensed, with its discharge pipe 28 projecting through the neck of the bottle into the lower part thereof, and the stopper is tightened in the neck as above described. The valve 9 is then opened and the air supply means is actuated by manipulating the bulb in the usual manner whereby air under pressure is supplied to the bottle. The valve 9 is then tightly closed so as to prevent retraction of the air thus supplied. By pressing downwardly upon the push button 22, the head 25 of the valve 21 is lowered from its seat 18, whereupon the liquid in the vessel, due to the air pressure in the bottle, is forced through the discharge tube 28 into the chamber 2 from whence it flows through the spout. The packing disc 19 fits snugly about the stem of the valve 21 and thus prevents escapement of the liquid into the chamber 3. Upon releasing the button, the head 25 of the valve is reseated by the action of the spring 24, and the outflow of liquid is stopped.
What I claim is An appliance of the class described including a head having two alined chambers therein, there being a perforated partition therebetween, a perforated sustaining disc in said head at the lower end of the lowermost of said chambers; a perforated rubber valve seat beneath and bearing against said disc; a packing member in the bottom of the uppermost of and having a sleeve extending into and closmunication with said lowermost chamber therein; a tubular post having a valve chamber in its top, the upper end of said post being secured in the lower end of said head and clamping said valve seat in place; a discharge pipe extending upwardly into said post with its upper end secured therein and having communication with the valve chamber therein, there being an annular space in said post surrounding said tube beneath the upper portion thereof; a valve controlled air supply means in connection with said head and having communication with said annular space in said post, there being a passage-way in said head and in said post affording communication therebetween; and a stopper fixture on said post for mounting the appliance upon a vessel.
