IMPROVEMENT IN TRACES FOR HARNESS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,179, dated March 21, 1876; application led February 11, 1876.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE W. SLAUsoN and CHARLES H. TRIPHAGEN, ot' Pewamo, in the county ot' Ionia and State of Michigan, have inveu ted certain new and useful linpr'ovements in Fastening Traces to Whifletrees; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereot', which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, -Which form a part of this specitication.
Our invention relates to the ordinary tracefastening, consisting of a slot formed in theend ot' a trace, and adapted to receive a metal eye on the end ot' a whiflietrec; and it consists in providing the slotted end ofthe trace with a piece ot' sheetrubber, sewed into the saine, and filling the slot therein except at the rear end, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. In the annexed drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a central horizontal section. f
A represents a whifletree, provided at its end with the ordinary T- shaped eye B. G represents the trace, provided at or near the end' with the usual slot a for the passage of the eye B. D is a piece of sheet-rubber, stitched between the pieces 4ot' leather that form the trace. This rubber fills the slot a with the exception of the rear end, Where a round hole is left the size of the shank of the eye B. There is also a slit. b, cut in the rubber' D in the slot a to admit of the passage of the head of' the eye B. When this head is passed through, the rubber closes around the shankand fastens it securely, so that it cannot unhook.
We are aware that elastic material has been used, in combination with metal plates, tc., for curtains and the like, and we do not, broadly, claim such as our invention; but by our construction all metal plates are dispensed with, and a securityY given to traces never before attained by so simple and cheap device. It does not materially add to the eXpenseot' the trace.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The trace C, provided with the usual slot a, in combination with the rubber D, fastened between the two parts ofthe trace, as shown, and provided with a perforation at the lower end, constructed and arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
