Filed April 28, 1928 Y a w:
war/es f7 Alas/7; gj mm Patented Mar. 25, 1930 CHARLES A. NASH, on PORTLAND, OREGON GARTER BUTTON Application filed'April 28, 1928. Serial No. 273,719.-
. This invention relates to the class of apparel apparatus and pertains particularly to a garter. p
" The primary object of the present invention is to provide a new and improved type of garter button of extremely simple design of. such a character that the sheerest of material can be grasped thereby without danger ofinjury. r
Another object of the invention is to provide, an improved garter in which the clasp which is formedin two parts, can be readily manipulated to grip the cloth to securely hold the same and in which the release of the garter can be obtained quickly and easily. The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming. part of this specification, .with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing of the drawings butmay be changed or modified so long as such changes or modification mark no material departure from the salient features, of
claims.
. Inthe drawing? c Figure 1 shows the garter structure empensory type, the button being shown on an enlarged scale'.
Figure'Qshows a garter of the band or limb encircling type, the button being shown on an enlarged scale. Q
Figure 3 is a sectional view on an enlarged scale of the clasp showing the manner in which the two parts thereof are'associated Figure 4 is a view in rear-elevation on an enlarged scale of the clasp device, and
Figure 5 is a view similar to Figure 1 illustrating the button in approximately actual size and in the form it will take when placed on themarket. w V p "Referring now 'to the drawing in detail wherein like numerals of; reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the numeral 1 indicates generally the clasp which as shown, ismade up of a shell2 and a plug 3. i
the invention as expressed in the appended bodying the present invention and of the sus In Figure 1' the clasp 1 is shown attached to a strap 4 by means of which it may be suspended rom the proper article-of clothing and as shown this strap is made up of two sections 4 and 4t" one of which is attached to theplug and the other to the shell. The section 4 is connected to the section 4* by one member of a snap button 5. The free end of the section P is detachably connected to the body of this section by the snap button 5, by means of which they can be joined after the extension of one of the members through the proper supporting element.
In Figure 2 the clasp. supporting strap 6 is the typedesigned to encircle the limb and this strap is of one piece one end thereof. being permanently secured to the ring or loop 7 of the plugIbody whereas the other end after 7 being passed through the loop 8 of theshell is brought back and attached to the central bar 90f a buckle 10, the bodyof the strap being passed through the buckle between the side, bars and across the center bar, 9 before being passed throughnthe loop 8 which is carried by the shell.
By the use of the buckle lOthe limb encircling strap 6 can be readily adjusted to the right circumference for the comfort of the wearer. V
The clasp 1 which is made up ofthe shell 2 and plug 3 is designed to securely grip the cloth of the stocking, without injuring the same and this result is produced through the peculiar design of the two members and the manner in which they connect together.
The shell 2, is provided with a longitudinally extending bore which is relatively small from the outer end to approximately the central portion thereof, this portion being indicated by the numeral 11 and from'the central portion to the inner face of the shellthe bore is relatively large; the large; portionbeing indicatedby the numeral 12. As shown in Figure 3 the shoulder formed in the central portion of the, shell where the large portion of the bore joins the smaller portion, is hollowed to form theannularshallow groove.
13 and the portion 11 is-slightly constricted toward the outer end as indicated by the numeral 14. This constriction of the wall may pressed.
be of the character where the wall is straight throughout from the outer end of the bore to the inner end of the bore section or, as shown in Figure 3 it may be slightly curved.
The plug 3 which is associated with the shell comprises an inner relatively large circular portion 15 and a forwardreduced portion 16. The circumference of the portion 15 is slightly lessthan the bore portion 12 so that when the plug is in position in the bore of the shell a blank spaceis left in which the fabric of the stocking is com The forward portion 16 of the plug which extends into. the reduced portion 11 of the bore is of slightly less diameter thanthe reduced-portion as is shown leaving suflicient space between the walls of the two members for the stocking material. At the pointrof joinder between the portions 15 and 16 there is formed an annularrib 17 whichextends axially from the portion 15 and has a clamping coaction with the concave shoulder 13.
The free end or tip of the portion 16 of the plug is flared slightly as indicated at 18 so that a binding action will be set up between the plug and the shell as the tip of the plug passes through the narrow portion of the bore11. .7
The rear of the plug body is formed to provide the button or plate 19 which bears against the limb of the wearer andin order to prevent rubbing or chafing this button is slightly convexed and preferably smooth and polished. j
The clasp device is preferably formedof amaterial having slight resilient qualities such as celluloid or partially vulcanized 'rub-w her as this material permits the part to give slightly when connected and disconnected.
From the foregoing description itwill be readily understood that in the use ofthe present garter structure the shell portion 2 is placed upon the outer face of the stocking material and the plug portion'3 positioned behind the shell'upon the inner side of the stocking and the tip of the portion 16 is then forced into the bore of the shell until the members are coupled together in the manner shown in Figure 3.
j-When the membersQ and 3 are coupled in the manner shown the stocking cloth-will be securely wedged between the walls of the plugbody and the wall of the bore through the shell. Release of the part can be readily effected by pressing upon the tip of the plug portion 16 which normally projects a slight distance beyond the forward face of the shell when'the parts, are connecterhas shown.
- Having thus described my invention what I claim is 7 .1. A- garter clasp comprisingja shell body having-a bore having a passage formed therethrough said passage being of materially less diameter at orieend. of the shellthan at the the inner end of said plug, and means carried by the plug and shell for the attachment thereto of a holding strap, said plug at its forward end being of a diameter to bind slightly in the'srnaller diameter of said bore of the shell. 1
2. A clasp comprising a shell provided with a bore having inner and outer portions of different diameters, and a lug having inner and outer portions of di erent diameters, one of said parts having a concave shoulder joining its portions and the other having a rib extending axially from its larger portion and cooperating with the shoulder to produce a clamping actionfor clamping the edge of a stockingor the like between the shell and plug, and the outer portions of said parts being the smaller diametrically. 1
3. A clasp comprising a shell provided with a bore having inner and outer portions of different diameters, and aplughaving inner and outer portions of different diameters, one of said parts having a concave shoulder joining its portions and the other having a rib extending axially from larger portion and cooperating with the shoulder to produce a clamping action for clamping the edge of a stocking or the between the shell and plug, the outer bore and plug portions being the smaller diametrically, and said smaller bore portion tapering in the direction of its outerend.
4. A clasp comprising a shell provided with a bore having inner and outer portions of different diameters, and a plug having inner and outer portions of different diameters, one of said, parts having a concave shoulder joining its portions andthe other.
having a rib extending axially from its larger portion and cooperating with the shoulder to producea clamping action for clamping the edge of a stocking or the like between the shell and plug, the outer bore and plug portions being the smaller diametrically. and said plug portion having a flared outer end.
a 5. A clasp comprising ashell provided shoulder to produce a clamping action for clamping the edge of a stocking or the like between the shell and the plug, the outer bore and plug portions being the smaller diametrically, said smaller bore portion tapering in the direction of its outer end, and said plug portion having a flared outer end.
In testimony whereof I afi'ix my signature.
CHARLES A. NASH.
