FASTENING SUPPLYING MECHANI SM Original Fild Oct. 25, 1924 MENTOR Wfl1 Patented Mar. 25, 1930 UNITED STATES ipmem GFFHCE ELMER R. POPE, OF SOUTH HAMILTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TOJ 'UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CORPORATION, JERSEY Original application ma October 25, 1924, Serial No.
1928. Serial This invention relates to fastening supplying mechanisms and is illustrated herein as embodied in means for supplying nalls' to a hand-operated nail inserting device.
" herein as supplyingnails to a nail inserting implement of the character disclosed and claimed in Letters Patent of the United States, No. 1,717,402, granted June 18,1929, on my co-pending application Serial -No.' 745,893, filed October 25, 1924, of which this is a'division, although the invention 'is not limited to use in such an implement.
' Featuresof the invention comprise'a novel arrangement by which the presence of afastening inserting device in operative relation to the outlet of a source of fastening supply is operative to release a number of fastenings which then pass from the source of supply to one or more guldeways carried by the insertlng device, and a novel supporting and positioning means for a fastening lnserting device, illustrated as a spring clip together with a plurality of gage members arranged to contact with the surface of'the fastening insert-ing device, each over a small area, to support and position the fastening inserting device for the reception of fastenings from the source of supply. I
With the above and other features and ob jects in view, the invention will now be described in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings,
Figs. 1 and 2 are a side elevation and a front elevation, respectively, each with certain parts in section, illustratingfastening supplying means embodying my invention as delivering fastenings to a fastening inserting implement of the kind disclosed and claimed in said Letters Patent No. 1,717,402. V
The illustrated mechanism for supplying fastenings to a fastening inserting device is arranged to handle nails which it receives OF EATER-SON, JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEW FAsTENINe-snrrLYme MECHANISM 7 745,893. 'Divided and. this application filed. May 31, No.'282,033.
from a hopper provided with suitable' mechanism, which maybe of any usual type, to feed nails to a raceway or raceways 62. As illustrated, there is a pair of these races ways, the lower end of each being arranged in alinement with a guidewayconsisting of a tube 64. Each tube 64 is long enough to contain sufficient nails to charge one ofthe nail receiving tubes of an inserting device, indicated in broken lines, which may be vof the kind illustrated in said Letters Patent No. 1,717,402. The passage of nails from the raceways62 to the tubes 64 of the supply device andfrom the tubes 64 to the nail receiving tubes of the nail inserting device is controlled by .the' presence of the nail inserting device-with its nail receiving tubes in alinement with the tubes 64 0f the supply device.
' In order that the nail inserting device may be properly held in position, a spring clip 66, with its front'open, is arranged" readily to receive andto permit the removal of the nail inserting device. Three gage members 68are provided With their surfaces so located that when the nail inserting device is inserted in the clip 66 and is pushed rearwardly against these gage surfaces, it will be properly positioned relatively to the nailsupply means. For this purpose it is only necessary that each of the gage members engage the nail inserting device over a small area.
When the nail inserting device is inserted in the clip 66 for the receptionof fastenings, its upper end engages a pair of lugs 70 carried by a slide 72 mounted in a bracket'74 of the supply device. A spring 7 6 housed in the bracket 7 4 tends normally to push the slide 72 outwardly so that portions ofthe slide are positioned beneath the outlet of the tubes 64 and prevent the passage of nails from these tubes. On the other hand, when the slide 7 2 is pressed inwardlyagainst the spring 76 by the insertion of the nail inserting device, the
slide 72 passes out from under the outlets of the tubes 64 and the nails in those tubes are free to drop device.
A pair of pivotally mounted stops 80 (the upper endof the left-hand oneof which is broken away in Fig. 2) are arranged for into the tubes of the inserting movement into the path of feed of the endmost nail in each raceway 62. The stops 80 are fast upon a rock shaft 82 normally held by a spring 84: in the position shown in Fig. l, in which the stops are just out of engagement with the fastenings in the raceways 62. An arm 86, also rigid with the rock shaft 82, engages the upper end of a rod 88 mounted for sliding movement with its lower end resting upon a cam surface 90 carried by the slide 72. Thus when the slide 72 is moved rearwardly, the rod 88 moves downwardly, the stops 80 rocking under the influence of the spring 8& into position to prevent the passage P of nails from the raceways 62 into the tubes 64. At the same time, the nails in the tubes 64'drop' into the tubes of the nail inserting device. WVhen the nail inserting device is removed, the slide 72 is moved out by the spring 76 into position to prevent the passage of nails from the tubes 6a, at the same time moving the rod 88 upwardly and rocking the stops 80 out of engagement with the nails in the raceways 62 so that the nails in the raceways may move downwardly filling the tubes 64.
While the invention is illustrated herein as embodied in a device adapted to handle nails of considerable size, for example nails such as are used for attaching rubber heels to shoes, it should be understood that its utility is not limited to the handling of fastenings of this character.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters tenings from the raceway to the guideway,
and connections between said two means operative to cause the first to prevent the passage of fastenings from the raceway to the guide way when the second is moved into position to permit the passage of fastenings from the guideway.
