UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
WILLIAM E. PHELPS, QF ELMWQOD, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-SCREENS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,155, dated March 21, 1876; application filed December 28, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1;, WILLIAM E. PHELPS, of Elmwood, county of Peoria'aud State of Illinois, have invented certain Improvements in Coal-Screens, of which the following is a specification The nature of my invention relates to improvements in the construction of coal-sepa rating screens; and the invention consists in mounting the screen-bars, which are prismatic in cross-section, in a diagonal position, or with one of their corners upward, and securing them in the frame by mortising their full sizes and a greater portion of their depth into the transverse framing-bars, all as hereinafter fully described.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a top plan view of my invention, and Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the same, on the line at x in Fig. 1. v
Referring to the parts by letters, letters A represent the bars forming the sides of the screen, and B B 'B represent the transverse bars connecting the bars A, to which they are secured by hook-rods (land nuts 0. Letters D represent the screen-bars, each a plain prism, as shown in the drawings, and, preferably, of iron. The bars B B B are mortised, as shown at Fig. 2, for the reception of the bars D, the mortise passing entirely through the}; bar B, but only partly through the bars The bars .D are inserted through the bar B and their ends into the mortises in the bars B. The bars, being then secured by the hook-rods .0 firmly in place, will retain the bars D. The mortises in the bars B B B are cut so as to hold each bar D with one corner uppermost,
and with its upper portion slightly above the surfaces of the bars B B B. Any number of central bars B, necessary or desired, may be used.
It will be seen that this method of" securing the bars D in the screen-frame dispenses with all screw-bolts, nails, or other aids for fastening the bars in place, and holds the bars securely, while, at the same time, it will permit of their being removed or replaced readily and easily.
It will also be seen that the portions of the bars D above the surfaces of the bars B B B, will carry the coarser coals over the bars B B B Without striking or being stopped by them and, further, that the portions of the bars D nearest each other, being angles, will prevent choking so read ly as when flat or round surfaces are adjacjjnt.
I claim- A coal-sore n. constructed of a series of rectangular parallel bars, D, set diagonally, as described, and secured in position by means of the end bars B B, and one or more intermediate cross-bars, B, in the manner substantially as and for the purpose specified.
' WILLIAM E. PHELPS. Witnesses:
