15 since for each handkerchief two rollers must be provided. Furthermore, on each handkerchief a certain width of material must be reserved for stretching, so that'the embroidery cannot be worked as near as desired to the 20 edge of the handkerchief. The edge must afterwards be cut ofl there is an unused waste of material.
These disadvantages are obviated by the process according to the present invention in 2 that between each two consecutively working needles an intermediate portion of a piece of material running in the direction of the row of needles is wound upon a shaft disposed perpendicular to the row of needles, so that be- 3o tween each two of these shafts a strip is left free for embroidery.
In the accompanying drawing is shown a practical example of the device for ing the material, whereof;

A piece of material 1 6 (Fig. 2) is provid d the lengtlrof, which corresponds to as many handkerchief's. as there. are embroidery sl t-06S, i. e. the intermediate spaces between ,ejacli two shaftv members 7? afterremQving the shaft.- halves; of alframe, the, shafts being dividedfrom one another withequal spac s there:
betweenso that between each two shafts as much materialis. provided as cor-respondsitd one handkerchief. J Uponinserting the shaft members 7 'the material is clamped fast and by rotation of thesh afts 7 (Figs. 8-10) inserted in the tubes 6 a portion of the material of each handkerchief is wound on the shaft and the surface of the material remaining in the embroidery frame is tightly stretched. The tightly stretched surface of I the material lies on the rear side of the frame, turned towards the path of the shuttle, and the needles 17 are disposed behind the surface of the material, at the side of the shafts 7. The embroidery frame is so dimensioned that only the surface of the handkerchief to be embroidered remains free, whereas the whole of the remaining part is wound up, which hasthe advantage that a greater number of handkerchiefs than formerly can be embroidered at one time. Moreover the stretching of a single piece of material can be done in a shorter time than the stretching of handkerchiefs hitherto.
I claim: .1. Apparatus for stretching the material for embroidering handkerchiefs in embroidery machines, comprising a plurality of frames for arrangement in series on the frame of an embroidery machine and each having a shaft perpendicular to the embroidery machine needles and so arranged that an intermediate portion of a piece of material running in the direction of the row of needles between each two needles working consecutively may be wound upon one of said shafts and so that between each of said shafts a strip may beleft free for the embroidery, each of said shafts comprising a pair of longitudinally divided members one separable from the other. V
2. A stretching device of the class described comprising a frame for arrangement on the frameof an embroidery machine and provided with parallel shafts mounted for rotation and provided with means to prevent backward rotation and also provided with tubes in which said shafts are concentrically arranged and the inner diameter of which is greater than the diameter of said shafts to form annular spaces around the shafts, each tube being open on one side and each of said shafts comprising a pair of substantially semi-cylindrical members one separable from the other. e V V 8.-Apparatus as claimed in claim 1, in which each of said several longitudinal frames secured on the machine frame is of oblong rectangular form and each frame is 50 provided with one of said parallel shafts arranged perpendicular to the long side of the frame, said shafts of the several frames being equally spaced apart and each frame also having stop devices to prevent backward 55 rotation of said shafts.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set myehand this 29th day of January, A. D.
