IVEPBNHOLE COVER This invention: relates to manhole covers and: has among: its objects to 7 providea new and; useful) cover which shall besimple inoonstnuction, durable and readily installed for manholes in: road pavements.
Aingimportant' obj ect' of: my invention=is to provide a; manhole'cover whiohshall overcome certain inherent disadvantages-inthe present on known t'ypeiofmanhole covers. A
10 manhole may be considered as a fixed im-' movable rsupporting column for: theicover. It
is: Well known that-concrete. slab pavements settle: and that under certain heavy; loads,-
suoh as when-:a heavy truck passes-over them; will move relatively to the: manholecover and! its support, and thus: often cause" displacement between the concrete slab pgortions and! the/11131111016 COV6IS;;tllLlS cracking the;sla b: portions. around the-manhole covers. I tgis theneforeoneioftheobjectsof inventionvto; provide a1 manhole-cover which shall bezsuppoirted 1 on the o'oncreteslab and: readi- 1y; movable with it under? loading; or settlement' to: thereby; overcome any relative dis r placement between it and the. adjacent 1 conorete-sla'b."
Another object of my invention is tdprovide a. manhole cover with meansforl af fordingritsdnstallation on the-proper grade level. which means Will support the cover at the: desired. grade level. orv elevation during thespouringmf-the concrete road slab I around it and yet permit itsfree :movement with the slabiunder any; settlement thereof;-
A further object of my; invention is to provide almanhole I cover having a vframe or collar'fw'ith'i integral means fon supporting: it'on the'ro'a'd 'slab; I I r I still further objeot of' my invention: is found in the -provision' ofadju'stahle' means for' supporting? the"- manhole cover frame on a supporting ring di1ringits installation" and theiponringofthe concrete slabar'ound With the" above and othert'obj sets in view, my invention consists-in" the novel combina tion, construction and arrangement" of the parts. and membersnshown in my preferred embodiment in the attached diawings, de-- scribed. in the following: specifications" and particularly pointed: out. in the appended. claims. I
Referring to the illustrations: Fig. 1,.is a
half elevation and halfverticalsection showing my new and improved; manhole cover.
' F g. 2, is aplan View of the cover.
Figs. 3, a, and 5, are respectively cross sections ofthe cover plate, frame or collar and installationsupporting ring.
7 It will be runderstood that the principles of designherein shown for a cover for. a circu lar manhole may be readily adaptedto-manhole covers for manholes of any other cross sectional formation:
The wall of the manhole is indicatedby numberl"0.
Anannular baseor ring 11' is providedffor mounting: uponthe top-of the manhole wall 10. The ring 11 iszofdl cross section havin gta base portion 11 and'a vertically disposedintegral wall portionwl-l Suitable stiffening brackets'or. lugs II 'may. becast thereon as shown. The wa-llfportion l l is formed with suitably spacedholes 111 I The-cover collar or frame- 12 comprises an annular wall1-2 having slots 12 thereinsuit ably spaced toregisterwith the holesll 'in the ring: 11 and extendingupwardly, from the lower. edge of: the: frame to a desirable point;
The upper edgeofthefframe 12is provided with fa ledge 12 for the cover plate 131 Theupper'portion of the frame 1219 also enlarged to form an annular; rim, or flange 12 It hereben-otedthat the rim: or
flangelQP might be readily modifiedin the for-1n: of segmental lugs or flange extensions of" any; suitable formation whereby? such frame 12f1night be suitably supported; upon the concrete road: slab '14: I
In" the;- installation of my improved manhole' cover thering- 1 1 is first mounted; in place upon the topof the manhole" wall 10. Bolts 1 5 are-then placed in-thehole's-ll with their heads againstthe outsideof thewall portion 11 Then/the frame 12 is inserted within the ring 11 withthe slots 12 registering' overthe bolts 15 andwhen the frame 12 is properly leveled' to' ther'oad grade, it is securely retained in place by the tightening of the nuts of the bolts 15.
The concrete slab 1 1 may then be placed and when the cement has set, the nuts on the bolts 15 may be loosened as the frame 12 will then be supported by means of its flanged upper end 12 upon the concrete slab.
It will now be-readily apparent that where- ,as the frame 12' is confined within the ring 11 it is free to go up and down with the slab l l due to the freeengagement'ot thebolts 15 within the slots 1%.
It will also be noted that the collar or -While'the term manhole has been used throughout the above description it is obvious that the same problems exist in other structures than those technically known as manholes, as for instance in catch basins or wherever there is a lined cavity below the paving slab, accessible through an opening in the paving slab which opening is provided with a trafiic supporting cover either imperforate or in the form of a grid or the like. It is intended that the term manhole as used in the claims shall be construed accordingly.
