Description
May 15, 1934. c MAYER 1,959,171
MANHOLE CONSTRUCTION Filed July 26, 1930 7 BY Z 5 -11 r 22 A TTORNE Y6 Patented May 15, 1934 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to an adapter for use in road resurfacing work.
In the past, to the best of my knowledge and.
belief, when contractors have resurfaced road--' ways in which manhole casings, valve chambers, and electric ducts are inserted, in order to raise the level of the manhole cap to correspond with the resurfaced level of the road it has been customary to dig up the entire manhole casing and extend the masonry to a desired level, and then. 1
re-position the manhole casing so that the top cap receiving portion of the casing will be elevated level with the resurfaced road.
It is the object of my invention to provide an adapter for use in road resurfacing work which will enable the road builder to avoid the necessity of digging up manhole casings and elevating: them to a desired level.
Specifically it is the object of my invention to provide an adapter having an annular flanged portion which will be of corresponding size to the dimensions of the manhole cap, and which will have an opening of suitable size to receive the cap and to firmly anchor the adapter on the manhole casing so that the jars brought about, by trafiic will not tend to loosen the adapter.
The above objects and other objects to which reference will be made in the accompanying description, I accomplish by that certain construction of which I have illustrated a preferred embodiment.
Referring to the drawing:
Figure 1 is a view partly in section, of a manhole casing prior to the resurfacing of the road,
" the casing being of usual construction.
Figure 2 is a sectional view showing one way of practicing my invention by the insertion of a manhole adapter within the manhole casing, so that the level at which the manhole cap will be supported will conform to the resurfaced plane of the roadway.
Figure 3 is a sectional view of a manhole adapter.
I have illustrated my invention as applied to a round manhole casing, but it will be understood that my new construction may be employed with different shaped casings, such as are employed for valve chambers, electric ducts, and the like.
In Figure 1 I have illustrated the sewer masonry to which the manhole extends at 1. The manhole casing 2 has an annular flanged base 3 which is positioned on the top surface of the masonry wall. The great Weight of the manhole casing, and the fact that the road bed 4 and the roadway surface 5 are filled in about it, will keep the casing in position.
An annular opening 6 in the top of the casing receives the manhole cap indicated at 7.
In Figure 2 I have illustrated the manner of use of my novel adapter which (referring to Figure 3) it will be noted, has a flanged portion 8 of similar size as the manhole cap and an annular recessed portion 9 into which the cap '7 will Depending on the new level of the roadway after it is resurfaced, I provide adapters of different depths so that the roadway may be raised a desired amount.
casing.
Supposing that a roadway is resurfaced every If the level is raised two inches the first ten years and two inches more the second ten years, the first year an adapter two inches long will be required, and after this has been in use for ten years it may be removed and a four inch adapted positioned in the manhole casing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters ten years.
Patent, is
A manhole adapter for use with a manhole casing having a top lid space and downwardly facing engaging means accessible from its interior, comprising a ring shaped on its lower side to fit said lid space and shaped on its upper side to be fitted by the manhole lid, and having interior upwardly facing engaging means spaced down from its lid receiving part, tie rods, and nuts screwed on the tie rods and engaging over said engaging means of the adapter, said tie rods extending down to enter the interior of the casing and having lower hook portions to engage under the engaging means of the casing, to hold the adapter rigidly unitary with the casing upon tightening of the nuts onto the engaging means of the adapter.
