Match 18, 1930. D. B. K. VAN RAALTE 1,751,060,
DRAWER SLIDE Filed May 15, 1928 I a @Jiomo gi Patented Mar. 18, 1930.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE DIRK R. K. vAN RAALTE, OF HoLLAND, MICHIGAN, AssIeNoR T CHARLEs r. LIM- RERI' COMPANY, or HOLLAND, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION OF MICHIGAN DRAWER SLIDE Application filed May 15,
This invention relates to a drawer slide. It is an object and purpose of the present invention to provide a very practical type of extension drawer slide in which the full width of an enclosing casing can be utilized for drawer space and in which the number of sliding parts required for a fully extensible slide are reduced through the utilization of the depending sides of the drawer below the bottom thereof in place of an additional sliding element. A further object of the invention is to make a drawer slide of this character which is cheap to produce and with which the drawer can be readily disengaged from the slide when in its extended position.
The invention comprises many novel details of construction and organizations and arrangements of parts for effectively attaining the ends stated, together with many others not at this time pointed out but which will appear upon understanding of the invention had from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary perspective view illustrating a drawer equipped with the slide of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary vertical section through a drawer holding case or cabinet and 39 showing the drawer and drawer slide therein.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of the construction shown in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the forward end of one of the slide members to which the drawer is connected.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the difierent figures of the drawing.
The casing or cabinet in which the drawer is mounted may be of any desired character such as a desk pedestal, a filing cabinet, or the like, having vertical sides 1, a top 2, a back 3 and one or more horizontal partitions 4 dividing the cabinet into drawer receiving recesses.
On the upper side of each partition 4 a pair of spaced apart parallel slide members 5 are permanently secured each having a longitudinal groove 6 in its outer edge. Associated with each of the slide members 5 is a second 50 slide member 7 located at the outer edge of 1928. Serial' No. 277,831.
said member 5, which at the outer edge is longitudinally grooved for its entire length, as indicated at 8. A flat'metal plate 9 is permanently secured to the upper side of each of the slide members 7 near the rear end there of, extends inwardly across the adjacent slide member 5 and has a downturned lip 10 coming against the inner side of said member 5, as shown in Figs. 1 and2. r 1 r Each of the members 5 near its front end is equipped with a stop pin 11 which extends, at its outer portion, into the groove 6. Each of the adjacent slide members 7 carries two pins 12 and 13, the former ahead of and spacedv from the latter, and both extending into the adjacent roove 6, whereby when the slide members 7 are drawn forward a predetermined distance thepins 12 engage against the pins 11 and stop further outward movement of the members. I
The drawer of wood, preferably, has spaced vertical sides 14, the usual front and aback 15 with a bottom 16 which is located above thelower edges of the sides, front and bottom A a distance somewhat greater than the thickness of the slide bars 5 and 7. The back- 15 at'its' lower edge is notched at two spaced apart pointsto provide the notches 17, the
length of each notchbeing slightly greater than the combined widths of the two slide members 6 and 7, which pass therethrough. Each of the members 7 adjacent its front end is equipped with a pin 18 similar to the pin 11 and extending at its outer end into the groove 8 of said member 7. The depending portions 14: of the sides 14 below the bottom16 carry two spaced apart pins 19 and 20, the former being located ahead of and spaced fromthe latter, which extend into the grooves 8 of the adjacent members 7, it being evident that the drawer may move outwardly on the slide bars 7 until pins 19 come against the pins 18.
When the drawer is pulled to its outermostv position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the pins 19 are located a short distance ahead of notches 21 made in the bars 7 at their outer edges and from their upper sides downward- .ly to the grooves 8. By movingthe drawer back a short distance, or until the pins 19 come directly under the notches or openings 21,
the front end of the drawer may be lifted to disengage the pins 19 from the slide bars 7 The drawer may then be pulled farther forward or until the pins 20 come directly beneath the notches 21 whereupon the drawer may be completely disengaged from the slide members 7 by lifting pins-:20 through said notches. I
It is evident that when the drawer is retracted intothecabinet the slide members or bars 5 and 7-liealongsideof eachother and the depending portions 14 of the drawer sides lie alongside of the outer slide members 7 WVhen the drawer is pulled outwardly the drawer moves outwarden the-slideba'rs 7 and said slide bars 7 move outwardly over the partitions 4 and with respect to the fixed slide members 5. Theoutward movement of the 'drawer is limited when the pins 18 and 19 and ll a'nd 12 come into stopping engagement with eachother. In such position the drawer is fully extended'from the cabinet.v
The drawer slide describedis of simple but 7 "very practical construction. It is economical in the utilization'of the depending portions I of the sides below the bottom 16as a part oi the-extension slide construction for the drawer. This permits the use of only two bars at eachside of the drawer yet at the same time permits a completewithdrawal of the drawer from the case or cabinet within which it is normally located. Various changes in minor constructive details may be resorted to without departing from the invention defined in the appended claim, and the invention is to v be considered comprehensive ofall forms of structure coming within the scope of said claim.
I claim: 7 a V In ajdrawer guide construct on, a horizontal support; apair of'bars each grooved longitudinally at; its outer edge permanently secured to the support-rinspacedapartrelation', a second pair of bars each grooved longitudinally at its outer edgelocated one alongsidethe outeredge of each-of the first bars, guide pins eXtendingfromthe second barsinto the grooves ofthe first b ars, a stop adjacent the front end of-the groove in each of the' first bars; a drawer having vertical sides and a bottom located a distance above the loweredges of said sideslocated over said bars, guide pins extending inwardly from the sides of the drawer'at points below the bottom thereof into the grooves of-thef second mentioned bars and a stop adjacent the front end of the groove in each ofthe second mentioned bars, each of said bars ashort distance r back of its outer end having-a notch out therei in at its grooved edge" from its upper side downwardly to the groove therein for the purposes described.
In testimony whereof I aflfixmy signature.
