Description

P. M. WEGE DRAWER SLIDE March A11, 1930.
Filed Jan. 23, 1928 Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PETER M. WEG-E, OF GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO METAL OFFICE FURNI- TUBE CO., 0F GRAND RAPIDS, MICHIGAN, A CORPORATION 0F MICHIGAN DRAWER SLIDE Application filed January 23, 1928. Serial No. 248,598.
This invention relates to drawer slides. It is a. primary object and purpose of the present invention to make a simple yet very edective drawer slide for drawers using metal cooperating parts attached respectively to the drawer and to the housing or casing in which the drawer operates, whereby the greatest economy in production may be attained, together with an easy and practically noiseless operation of the drawer.
A preferred embodiment of the invention for the attainment of these ends is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which,
Fig. 1 is a fragmentary transverse vertical section through the drawer and a casing in which it is normally housed, the drawer slide construction also being shown in transverse section.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the drawer housing or casing, looking upwardly against the under side of the drawer, and
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary enlarged section similar to that shown in Fig. 2, but with parts broken away and shown in section to better illustrate the construction.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
The housing or casing of the drawer may be any desired conventional type, as the drawer may be mounted in a desk, table or lile cabinet, or in any of many other articles of furniture in which drawers are used, Wherever used, on the inner walls l of the housing or casing, drawer guide members are permanently secured formed of angle bars having vertical legs 2 located against the inner sides l of the ycasing and spot welded or otherwise fastened in place, from which horizontal legs 3 extend inwardly. A pair of these drawer guide members are mounted in the casing for each drawer therein.
The drawer has a bottom l, spaced apart sides 5, a back 6 and a front 7, being open at the upper side as is usual. At each lower corner of the drawer cooperating guide members of sheet metal are secured, each being bent from a single length of sheet metal to provide a leg 8 extending upwardly along the lower portion of each side 5 of the drawer to which it is spot welded or otherwise permabent inwardly under the bottom 4 and thence bent back in return making the U-bend V9 which embraces the inwardly extending flange or leg of the drawer guide on the casing with which it is associated. Near the inner and outer ends of each of the U-shaped portions 9 of the drawer guide members attached to the drawer, the metal is pressed inwardly at the bend as indicated at l() so as to. bear against the inner free edges of the flanges 3.
A drawer guide of the type described is very simple and economical to manufacture. The flanges 3 fit smoothly and easily within the U-shaped portions 9, ride easily and freely therein without rattling or cramping, the inward and outward movement of the drawer being controlled and made to move in a direct inward or outward direction at all times.
This construction of drawer guide has proved very practical, elficient and especially economical to manufacture. The invention is defined in the appended claims and is to be considered comprehensive of all forms of structure coming within their scope.
I claim:
l. In a construction of the class described, a casing having spaced apart vertical sides,
two angle members immovably secured one to the inner side of each side of the casing and having horizontal drawer guide flanges extending horizontally inward toward each other and in the same plane, and vertical flanges permanently secured to the sides of. the casing, a drawer, and drawer guide mem- Vnently secured. The lower end of each leg is' bers attached to the outer sides and at each lower side corner of the drawer, each of said drawer guide members being formed from a single piece of sheet metal with a vertical section lying against the outer side of and immovably secured to the side of the drawer, each of said sections being bent inward underneath the drawer for a short distance and then bent back upon itself in an outwardly opening U-bend, said drawer guide flanges extending into said Usshaped portions of the -drawer guide members to thereby guide the drawer in its sliding movements.
2, A construction containing the elements.,
in combination defined in claim 1, each of said drawer guide members attached to the drawer being provided with indentations made at the U-bends of said members toward the edges of said flanges to ride thereagainst, said indentations being made at a plurality of points in the lengths of said drawer guide members.
3. In a construction of the class described, a casing having spaced apart sides, adrawer guide fiange immovably attached at the inner side of eac-h side of the casing and extending horizontally inward, a drawer, drawer guide members fixed horizontally to the opposite sides of said drawer, each including an outwardly opening U-shaped member having upper and lower parts connected by a U-bend `and located so as to receive said flanges secured to the casing, said flanges and said drawer guide members being formed of sheet metal, and each of said drawer guide members ,on the drawer having portions pressed in at spaced apart points in the length thereof at the U-bends to bear against the edges of said drawer guide flanges.
In testimony whereof I aiix my signature.
PETER M. VEGE.
