Description

Patented Mar. 18, 1930 UNITED r'rs LANroUs r. Een, or ANAconnA, MONTANA, Assrenon on cnn-HALF To PAUL Knrsxov, on A1\:fAco1\n3A,Y MONTANA Y METAL FrLn Application led January 3, 1927. Serial No. 158,682.
This invention relates to a metal Working tool, of the nature of a file, consisting of a hardened metal body provided on its surface with fine grooves or ribs forming cutting teeth.
The invention aims to increase the efflciency and expedite the action of tools of the character indicated and prolong their period of service and with these ends in View and such others as result from the improvement, the invention consists of a iile having the corner at the intersection of adjacent faces notched to provide teeth and interspaced gullets, and having the face channeled and the line teeth checked.
vWhile the drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that in adapting the means to meet specific needs and requirements the design 2o may be varied and such other changes in the minor details of construction may be resorted to within the scope of the invention as claimed, without departing from the spirit thereof.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof, reference is to be had to the following description and the drawings hereto attached, in which,-
Figure 1 is a plan View of a three-cornered so tile embodying the invention.
Figure 2 is a detail sectional view on the line 2-2 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is an edge view of a fiat tile embodying the invention.
Figure 4 is a side view of the flat ile.
Figure 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 5 5 of Figure 4. y
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and designated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
The three-cornered le illustrated in Figures 1 and 2 has its three sides, or faces finely grooved to provide the usual cutting edges, and in accordance with the invention, the three corners are notched, as indicated at 10, to provide coarse teeth, and interspacing gullets, which provide clearance for the cuttings. This same feature is applied in other styles of files, whether square, flat, or half round,
the corner at the intersection of adjacent faces, or sides, being notched, as indicated at 10 to provide coarse cutting teeth. The sides of the notches may be` disposed at any relative angle, according to the desired formation of the teeth to thus adapt the file to a` particular work.
Another feature resides in channeling the face or side of the file, as indicated most clearly in Figure 1. rangement a main channel ll extends lengthwise of the lile and may be of any outline in cross section. Thelongitudinally disposed channel l1 has a Zig-Zag arrangement and is disposed medially of the file, whereby to uniformly divide the teeth comprising the cutting face. The teeth 12 upon one side of the channel 11 incline in an opposite vdirection to the teeth 13 upon the opposite side of the channel. The two sets of teeth 12 and 13 are similarly inclined in reverse order, thereby preventing side draft in the action of the file when in service. The teethv 12 and 13 are checked, as indicated at 14, to increase the cutting action of the file and to break upthread-lile cuttings. Lateral channels 15 project from the main channel l1 and inoline in opposition thereto, and extend through the outer opposite faces of the file. The channels provide in effect clearance passages for the rapid discharge of the cuttings, which are thus prevented from interfering with the rapid action of the ile. In the case of Hat files, one edge may be plain, but the corners are notched and the opposite edge is milled or nely grooved to provide the usual cutting teeth, and in addition the corners are notched to provide coarse cutting teeth. The broad faces or sides of the file may be channeled, and the usual line cutting teeth are divided by the longitudinally disposed In the preferable ar-y channel, and the teeth upon one side of the Y longitudinal channel incline in an opposite i" direction to the teeth upon the opposite side of the channel. A file embodying the invention is rapid in action, smooth cutting and partly free from tendency to side-draft.
Having thus described the invention, I claim:
teeth extending across the same and coarsel cutting teeth on the corners intersecting the finer teeth. .A
