J. A. HARD.
PEN-EXTRACTO'R.
No.175,082. Patented March 21,1876.
N- ETERS, FHOYO-LITHOGRAPHER, WASHINGYON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIoE.
JOSIAH A. HARD, DENVER, COLORADO TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT lN PEN-EXTRACTORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 175,082, dated March 21, 1876 application filed January 14, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSIAH A. HARD, of
Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and ,Ter-
- ot reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved device for extracting pens from their holders; and it consists of a metallic base, having two uprights at one end, between which is pivoted a lever, having its lower end provided with a series of corrugations, the parts being arranged and adapted to operate as will be hereinal'ter'more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention, with the lever raised for the introduction of the pen-point. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a side view in partial section, show ing the lever depressed upon the pen-point.
Similar lettersof reference occurring on the several figures indicate corresponding parts.
A represents a metallic base, which may be of any suitable ornamental pattern or configuration, and which is provided at one end with two parallel, upright bearings, a a, in which are formed holes 0 c. B represents a lever, provided with afluted or corrugated cam projection, b, on its inside lower end, said lever being pivoted or supported between the bearings a a, by a rivet, d, which passes through the side bearings and the lower part of the lever, as fully shown in the drawings.
In the practical operation of my invention the point or nib of the pen is pushed in between the upright bearings below the foot of the lever, and is caught and retained in that position by depressing the lever, as fully illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawings. The holder is then drawn away, leaving the pen in the embrace of the vice formed by the depression of said lever upon the base A. The advantage of my invention will be readily apparent, inasmuch as it entirely obviates the difficulties hitherto experienced in extracting pens from their holders, and without necessitating the soiling of the fingers from the ink which may have accumulated upon the pen.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
As a new article of manufacture, the hereinbefore-described pen-extractor, consisting of the base A, having upright bearings a a,
between which is pivoted the lever B, having the fluted cam b upon its lower end, substantially as described and shown.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of December, 1875.
