Patented Mar. 11, 1930 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE KARL E. JENSEN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO INDUSTRIAL GLOVES 30R- PORATION, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE GLOVE Application filed November 16, 1928. Serial No. 319,781.
The invention relates generally to gloves and more particularly to reinforced glove construction especially adapted and intended for use in rough and heavy work as for eX- ample, the handling of metal castings and sheets and in sand blasting and the like.
A particularly weak point in gloves which are subject to hard usage is in the crotch between the thumb stall and the palm of the glove, since this particular area constantly bears the brunt of the work. It is an object of the invention therefore to provide a glove construction embodying a new and improved reinforcement for this portion of the glove.
Heretofore it has been customary to provide a reinforcing member comprising an elongated strip of material secured in the crotch and curved about the base of the thumb stall in substantially the shape of a U. This construction is objectionable in that the strip is not flat but has bunches and folds of material along the inner edge of the U. Another object of the invention resides in the provision of a reinforcement for the thumb crotch of a glove which lies flat upon the supporting surface.
Other objects and advantages will become apparent in the following description and in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a front View of a glove with the thumb stall folded downwardly to show the invention embodied therein.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary vertical section on an enlarged scale, taken through the thumb stall on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
Figure 3 is a fragmentary transverse section of the thumb stall looking in the direction of the arrows on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Figure 4 is a plan view of a blank from which the thumb stall is formed.
Figure 5 is a plan view of a preferred form of reinforcing piece.
While the invention is susceptible of various modifications and alternative construct on I have shown in the drawi gs and ill herein describe in detail the preferred embodiment, but it is to be understood that I do not thereby intend to limit the invention to the specific form disclosed, but in tend to cover all modifications and alternative constructions falling within the spirit and scope of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
For the purpose of disclosure I show the present invention as embodied in a generally well-known type of glove comprising an end covering portion 6 and a gauntlet/7. Suitable strips 8 may, if desired, be secured over the wearing surface of the glove by such means as metal staples, for reinforcing purposes.
In gloves of this character the thumb stall, indicated at 10, is'generally formed separately from a one-piece or butterfly type blank 11 (Fig. 4) or from two similarly formed blanks. A properly formed aperture is provided in the palm section of the glove by making a sub stantially horse-shoe shaped cut in the palm section with the uncut portion of the material near the upper part of the palm of the glove; A flap 12 is thus provided which is utilized as a reinforcing means for the inner surface of the thumb stall.
The one or two piece thumb stall blanks are sewed, or folded and sewed, together to form the thumb stall and in either construction a narrow flap 13 is provided on opposite sides of the thumb stall which provides means by which the thumb stall is secured to the palm of the glove. 7 Obviously these flaps can only extend around the thumb aperture in the palm to a point adjacent the uncut portion of the flap 12 in order to permit utilization of the flap as a reinforcement'for the thumb stall.
In attaining the objects of the invention a reinforcing member is provided which has one part 141 overlying and secured to the palm of the glove and has another part 15 overlying and secu ed to the reinf rcing fl p 1.2, While the parts may be secured together in any suitable manner it has been found preferable to employ a metal staple or wire stitching for this purpose in order to secure permanent union.
Thethumb stall part 15 of the reinforcing member extends outwardly along the thumb stall to any desired distance, which is shown in Fig. 1 as being substantially midway between the tip and the base of the thumb stall. The palm part 14 of the reinforcing member is provided with a pair of lateral wings 16 which are constructed to fit between the ends of the flaps 13 on the thumb stalls and to cover and reinforce the portion of the palm therebetween. Thus the layer of material surrounding the base of the thumb stall will lie flat Without any bunches or folds of material due to the interfitting relation of the flaps 13 and the portions 14 and 16 of the reinforcing piece.
Air additional advantage of this construction is in the provision of a glove which has a three ply thickness of material on the inner side of the thumb stall, namely the thumb stall 11, (Fig. 2) the flap 12, and the part 15 of the reinforcing member. Moreover the flexing portion of the crotch and the adjacent portion of the palm of the glove is of two thicknesses of material comprising the palm of the glove 6 and the part 14 of. the reinforcing member.
It will be apparent that this construction provides a reinforcement for the thumb stall and crotch which is amply sufficient to withstand great wear and rough usage, and which eliminates the objectionable folding and bunching of material through the crotch.
I claim as my invention:
1. A glove comprising, in combination, a hand covering including a palm portion having a part thereof cut away to provide are inforcing flap and a thumb opening, a separately formed thumb stall having a pair of side members arranged to fit on either side of said opening with said palm flap extending outwardly overlying one side of the thumb stall, means for securing said side members to the palm of the glove and said flap to the thumb stall, and a reinforcing patch having a portion secured to the palm of the glove between the ends of said side members and having another portion secured to the thumb stall.
2. A glove comprising, in combination, a hand covering, a separately formed thumb stall having oppositely disposed flap-s by which said thumb stall is secured in place on the palm of the glove, and reinforcing means for the crotch of the thumb stall including a portion arranged to be secured. to the palm of the glove and shaped to overlie the portion of the palm intermediate the side flaps.
3. In an article of the characterdescribed,
the combination of a hand covering having a thumb element including a pair of members by which said thumb element is secured in position on said covering, and a reinforcing piece secured to adjacent portions of said fixed my signature.
