Patented Mar. 4, 1930 PATENT it FFECE GEORGE D. HAUSER, OIE UTICA, NEW YORK, ASSIG-NOR T UTICA PRODUCTS, INC., OF
UTICA, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK CONTAINER Application filed January 8, 1929. Serial No. 331,064.
This invention relates to containers, more especially to containers, such as waste baskets or the like formed from sheet metal.
This invention has for an object a new and improved sheet metal container suitable for use as a waste basket or the like which is of sturdy construction, will withstand hard usage and can be quickly and easily assembled.
Other objects, novel features and advantages of this invention will be apparent from the following specification and accompanying drawings, wherein 2 prises a plurality of sheet metal side members 10 held in assembled relation by angle strips 11 which form the corners of the basket. The
side plates and angle strips are provided with turned back edges 10 and 11 which are interlocked by sliding the angle strips 11 over the edges of the side plates 10. A foot 12 is mounted in the bottom of each angle strip 11 by means of flanges arranged in the space formed by the turned back edges 11.
The foot 12 is provided with an inwardly offset portion from which extends a pair of arms 13 arranged perpendicular to each other. Preferably, the turned back edges 11 are cut away for a short distance near the bottom of the angle strips to provide clearance for the neck 1a which supports the arms 13 from the main portion of the foot 12.
The bottom 15 of the basket consists of a sheet metal plate having downwardly bent flanges 16. Each corner of this plate rests upon and is supported by the arms 13 of one foot 12 and the arms 13 overlie the flange 16. Preferably, the U-shaped clips 17 have one leg attached to the flange 16 and receive the lower edges of the side plates 10, thus preventing upward movement of the bottom 15. The basket is provided at its top edge with a finishing frame 18 which covers the top edges of the plates 10 and the ends of the angle strips 11 and gives a finished appearance to the basket.
The above described waste basket is of very sturdy construction, will withstand a great deal of hard usage, and can be quickly and easily assembled. This structure may be assembled by first engaging the lower edges of the side plates 10 in the clips 17 and then sliding the corner strips 11 over the edges of the plates 10 to interlock the turned back flanges 10 and 11. The feet 12 may then be slid into the lower ends of the angle strips 11 with the lower edges of the plates 10 and the flange 16 between the arms 13 and the corner strips 11. The feet may be permanently fixed in place by spot welding, if desired.
It is of course apparent that various structural modifications may be made in the de vice above described without in any Way departing from the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising side plates and angle strips having interlocking turned back edges, feet having flanges fitting into the spaces formed by the turned back edges of the angle strips, each foot having an inwardly offset portion arranged within said side plates and a bottom member resting'on said offset portion.
2. A device of the character described comprising side plates and angle strips having interlocking turned back edges. feet having flanges fitting into the spaces formed by the turned back edges of the angle strips, each foot having an inwardly ofl'set portion arranged within said side plates, a bottom member resting on said offset port-ion, and means for preventing upward movement of said bottom member.
3. A device of the character described comprising side plates and angle strips having interlocking turned back edges, feet having flanges fitting into the spaces formed by the inturned back edges of the angle strips, each foothaving an inwardly offset portion arranged within said side plates and a bottom member resting on said offset portion and a corner of the bottom member and overlying the depending flange thereof, and clips at tached to the flange of said'bottom member 1 and engaging the lower edges of said side plates to prevent upward turning of sald bottom member.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my 7 name to this specification.
GEORGE D. HAUSER.
5. A device of the character described comprising side plates and corner strips having interlocking turned back edges, a bottom member having a depending flange, feet having flanges fitting in the spaces formed by the turned back edges of the corner strips, each foot having an inwardly offset portion supporting one corner of said bottom member and overlying said depending flange, and means for preventing the upward'movement of the bottom member.
6. A device of the character described comprising side plates and corner strips having interlocking turned back edges, a bottom member having a depending flange, feet having flanges fitting in the spaces formed by the turned back edges of the corner strips, each foot having an inwardly offset portion sup porting one corner of said bottom member and overlying said depending flange, and
clips mounted on said depending flange to engage said side plates and preventing upward movement of said bottom member.
7. A device of the character described. comprising side plates and angle strips having in terlocking turned back edges, a bottom member having a depending flange and feet having flanges fitting in the spaces formed by the 7 turned back edges of the angle strips, each foot being provided with an offset portion having laterally extending arms supporting I a corner of the bottom member and overlying the depending flange thereof.
8. A device of the character described comprising side plates and angle strips having interlocking turned back edges, a bottom member having a depending flange and feet having flanges fitting in the spaces formed by the turned back edges of the angle strips,
each foot being provided with an offset portion having laterally extending arms supporting a corner of the bottom member and overlying the depending flange thereof, and means for preventing upward movement of said bottom member.
9. A device ofthe character described comprising side plates and angle strips having interlocking turned back edges, a bottom member-having a depending flange and feet having flanges fitting in the spaces formed by the turned back edges of the angle strips, each foot being provided with an offset portion having laterally extending arms supporting
