This invention relates to waste baskets and particularly waste baskets which are made of sheet metal.
The primary object of the invention is to 7.5 provide an improved waste basketv which is rigid in construction, which is composedof few and simple interfltting parts, and which can be readily and economically manufactured.
Another object is to provide a waste basket which has a corner sleeve or clip slidably engaging the sides whereby the entire basket is maintained in rigid position by means of a screw threadedly engaging a threaded member rigidly fixed to the inside of the sleeve or clip.
A further object is to provide a waste basket which is made of few and simple parts, which is sturdy in construction, and which can be quickly and easily assembled.
Numerous other objects and advantages will be apparent throughout the progress of the following specication.
The invention comprises in general a waste basket which is preferably made in rectangular form and which has its sides formed with flanges with which flanges on a bottom 1nteriit. The sides are also provided with inturned flanges which have interfitting relation and are received within a springy metal clip or sleeve. The tops of the sides are turned over to provide cornioes having re inforcing members which comprise flat corrugated metal strips arranged in these cornices to reinforce the waste basket at the corners thereof and r-ender rigidity thereto. The sleeve has a member welded to the inside thereof through which a screw member passes for holding the clips or sleeves in their proper position. A top clip or guard is held in position by the screw member, and a leather or rubber bumper is arranged between the top clip and the corner reinforcements at the corners o-f the waste basket. When the screw is tightened, the clip is drawn upwardlyimpinging the leather or Arubber bumper between the top clip and the metal kreinforcement at the corner. The spring metal sleeves 50 are, therefore, prevented from becoming loosened and the entire basket is held in rigid position.
The accompanying drawing illustrates a selected embodiment of the invention and the views therein are as follows:
Fig. 1 is a detailed perspective view of the improved waste basket.

Referring to the dra-wing, 6 designates a side of the waste basket which is bent over at 7, Fig. 2, to provide a top surface 8. This top surface is bent downwardly at 9 to provide an upper side edge 10, and then bent inwardly at 11 to provide the inturned lip 12. The bent-over portion just described provides an outer bead for the'waste basket having a recess 13 provided therein into which corner reinforcing members 14 are arranged.
The bottom of each side 6 is bent inwardly at 15, Fig. 2, and then vertically to provide a flange 16. A bottom 17 has a downwardly eX- tending flange 18 and an inwardly extending flange or lip 19. rThe flange 18 of the bottom is adapted to bear against the inside of the side 6, and the bottom lip 19 of the bottom is adapted to rest upon the inturned flange but 'confined within the upturned lip or flange 16, Fig. 2.
The edge of one side member, Fig. 3, is continued beyond its cooperating side 6 as designated at 20, Fig. 3, and this extension is bent at 21 and 22 to provide the legs 23 and 24 forming surfaces with which the deformed ends of a cooperating side member interfit. The cooperating side member 6 is bent at 25 and 26, Fig. 3, to provide the legs 27 and 28 which have interiitting engagement with the bent-over legs on the aforesaid cooperating end of tbe adjacent side. The extension 2() and the leg 23 on one side member bear against and interlit with the legs 27 and 28 formed on an adjacent and cooperating side. A rectangularly shaped spring metal sleeve 29 is slipped over the projecting parts of each of the cooperating sides, Fig. 3. The sides 30 and 31 of the sleeve engage the legs 27 and 28 of one side member while the side 32 of the sleeve engages the leg 24 formed on an adjacent side. Outwardly extending legs 33 and 34 are provided on the sides 30 and 35 respectively of the sleeve 29 and engage the side members 6 as designated at 36 and 37 respectively, Fig. 3. This spring sleeve causes the interfitting projections on adjacent side mem; bers to be pressed together, and the legs 33 and 34 of the sleeve cause adjacent side members to be squeezed inwardly. The sleeve is open at its inner side as designated at 38, Fig. 3, so that it may be readily slid to position and receive the extensions and legs formed on cooperating adjacent side members. The bottom of the sleeve, however, may be closed from its bottom 39 to a point designated at 40, Fig. 2, as this portion of the sleeve does not have to receive the projecting edges of the side members.
The reinforcing member 14 is preferably made from a flat strip of sheet metal and cor rugated as clearly shown in Figs. 4 and 5. This corner reinforcing member is received in the recess 13 to render rigidity to the waste basket at the corners thereof. A leather or rubber corner bumper 41 is placed over the top of the reinforcing strips 14 where adjacent sides interlock, and a top clip 42 is positioned above the bumper as clearly shown in Fig. 5. A screw member 43 passed through the clip 42 threadedly engages a threaded member 44 arranged inside of the sleeve 29. This threaded member may comprise an ordinary piece of angle iron having an upstanding leg 45 which is welded to the inside of the sleeve 29 and an inwardly extending leg 46 which is tapped as indicated at 47, Fig. 5, for threadedly engaging the screw 43. The tightening of the screw 43, therefore, pulls the sleeve 29 upwardly in position causing the clip 42, which grips adjacent sides, to be pulled downwardly, holding the sides, reinforcing members 14, and the bumper k41 in position.
A plug 48, Fig. 2, having a rubber, leather, or metal foot 49, may be driven into the sleeve'29, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
In assembling the waste basket, the four sides 6, having the upstanding flange or lip 16 in theposition shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2, are interlocked with the flanfres on the bottom as shown in Fig. 2. The sides are then brought into position with the eXtensions on the adjacent side members at the corners thereof snapped into interlocked position. The sleeX'e 29 is then inserted in place, and the lip or flange 16 is bent-over as shown in full lines in Fig. 2. The thus partly formed basket with the reinforcements arrangedin the corners is held together by means of the sleeves 29. Screws 43 are then provided for securing the parts together in rigid position, the screws 43 engaging the threaded openings 47 in the members 44. The plugs 48 are then driven 1n position and the entire waste basket is completely assembled.
The present invention provides a waste Vbasket which is made of few parts which are interlocked in position, and all the parts are `rigidly held in position by means of a single screw at each corner of the waste basket. The waste basket is reinforced at the corners, and corner bumpers are held securely in position by means of the screws. The waste ybasket is strong and rigid, may be quickly and readily assembled, and may be economically manufactured.
Changes may be made in the form, construction, and arrangement of the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of its advantages, and the right is hereby reserved to make all such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the following claims.
The invention is hereby claimed as follows:
1. A waste basket comprising a plurality of side members having flanges turned over at the top thereof to provide a recess, flat corrugated reinforcing members arranged in said recesses at the corners of said basket, inwardly turned flanges atthe bottom of said sides, a bottom arranged between said sides, flanges on the said bottom and interlocking with the flanges at the 'bot-tom of said sides, flanges on the side of said side members, the side flanges of one side member interlocking with side flanges on an adjacent side member, a sleeve slidably engaging the interlocked side flanges of adjacent side members for holding said parts in position, a member rigidly connected to said sleeve, a screw engaging said member for holding said sleeve in rigid position, a clip arranged at the corners of said basket, a screw memj ber extending through said clip and engag- 'ing said member, and a rubber bumper arranged between said clip and said reinforcing members whereby tightening of said tightening means holds all said parts in rigid position.
2. A waste basket comprising a plurality of side `members having flanges turned over at the top thereof to provide recesses, flat corrugated reinforcing members arranged in said recesses at the corners of said basket, inwardly turned flanges at the bottom of said side members, a bottom arranged between said side members, flanges on said bottom and interlocking with the flanges at the bottom of said side members, flanges on the sides of said side members, the side flanges of one side member interlocking with side flanges on an adjacent side member, and a sleeve slidably engaging the interlocked side flanges of adjacent side members for holding said parts in position, said sleeve having a longitudinal slot therein for permitting said sleeve to be inserted in position, the bottom of said sleeve downwardly from the waste basket bottom being closed.
3. A waste basket comprising a plurality of side members having flanges turned over at the top thereof to provide recesses, flat corrugated reinforcing members arranged in said recesses at the corners of said basket, inwardly turned fianges at the bottom of said side members, a bottom arranged between said side anges on said bottom and interlocking with the flanges at the bottom of said side members, flanges on the sides of said side members, the side flanges of one side member interlocking with side langes of an adjacent side member, a sleeve slidably engaging the interlocked side iianges of adjacent side members for holding said parts in position, said sleeve having a longitudinal slot therein for permitting said sleeve t0 be inserted in position, the bottom 0In said sleeve downwardly from the waste basket bottom being closed, threaded means fon holding said slee-ve in position, and a plug having a foot thereon driven into the bottom of said sleeve.
