Description

Feb. 25, 1930. ET GREEN THERMIONIC GENERATOR Filed March 2, 1923 Swuemtoz ERNEST GREEN l of bulb.
Patented Feb. 25, 1930- s 'A'rE'r cries ERNEST GREEN, or LONDON, ENGLAND, essienoR TO RADIO CORPORATION OF AMERICA, A COEPORATIONOF DELAWARE 'rrIER oi Io GENERATOR Application filed March'Z, 192-3, Serial No. 622,415, and in Great Britain March 2, 1922.
This invention relates to thermionic generators or amplifiers of high frequency oscillations and particularly to arrangements for increasing the efiiciency of the generators 5 or amplifiers by introducing a conducting shield or screen in proximity to electrodes.
According to this invention a metallic strip or ring placed either inside or outside the bulb is electrically connected to one or 0 other of the valve electrodes. Preferably a small metal ring is arranged at one end of the valve either inside or outside the bulb and is connected to the anode .or grid, as the case may be, which is sealed into the opposite end Although not limiting the invention to any particular explanation, such'a ring appears to modify the distribution of the electric field produced between the anode, grid and filament electrodes and their leads and supports so that the electric field at the container or envelope is reduced and conduction currents therein or on conducting films on the interior ofthe container is 'reducechwhe-reby the heat ing of the glass'and failure thereof are re duced and the efliciency of the valves is increased. I V
In cases, howevenwhere the anode and grid are sealed into the same-end of the bulb, the
supports of one of the electrodes may be so constructed and arranged that they screen the supports of the other-electrode and thus reduce the field before mentioned. 'My invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawing in which Fig. 1 illustrates one arrangement in acvcordance with the invention, and
Figs. 2 to 5 are modifications.
Figure 1 shows a metal ring A surrounding '40 the grid end of the valve and electrically connected to the anode by the lead B. Figure 2 shows a metal rmgC surrounding the anode end of the valve and electrically con nected to the grid G by the lead D. Figure- 3 shows a metal ring E inside the bulb and with its supports F forming a skeleton exconnected to one of said electrodesand surrounding the conducting extendlng portions of the other of said electrodes; 7
, 2; In a thermionic valve, an enclosure having anode and grid electrodes therein, conducting portions extending from each of said electrodes respectively to opposite ends of the enclosure, and a pair of conducting rings, each respectively connectedto one of said electrodes and surrounding the extending conducting portions of the other of said elec- 7 trodes. 1 3.'In a thermionic generator, an enclosure having anode and grid electrodes, conducting extending portions associated therewith'and respectively sealed into opposite ends of the container and a conducting member electricallyconnected tooone of said electrodes and surrounding he extending portionsof the other electrode.
