I WASHOUT PLUG.
.Application fiiea'oet ber' 1, 1928.; Serial No. 309,444.
The presentinvention relates to improvements 1n plugs and has reference more partlcularly to a wash out plug for associatlon with the boiler of a steam locomotive.
2 One of the important objects of the present invention is to provide a wash out plug wherein the parts can be readily and easily assembled and disassembled, said plug being of such construction as to eliminate leakage. A further object is to pro'vide a wash out plug of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and. further, well adapted to the purposes for which it is designed.
, Other objects and advantages will become apparent during the course of thefollow- 7 ing description.
. In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, and in which like numerals indicate like parts throughout'the same 2 Figure 1 is a front end elevation of the I wash out plug mounted in a boiler and ing.
' Figure 2 is a-seotional-Vievv through the wash out plug through the adjacent portion of the boiler, the two engaging heads of the cap member being partly shown in elevation.
In the drawing for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a bushing .that is both externally and internally threaded as shown in Figure 2, the internal threads 2 extending for the full length of 'ing to the respective faces of the flange.
The externally threaded inner end portion of the bushing is threaded into the usual flared opening provided'therefor in the wall A ofa boiler of a steam locomotive and the inner face of the flange 3 abuts with the. outer" face of the wall. V I
The wash out plug further includes the provision of an internally threaded cap 6 that is adapted forthreaded engagement over the outer threaded end portion-5 of the bushing 1 and formed on the inner face of said cap and x extending axially therefrom in the externally threaded stem or plug 7 for threaded engagement'with the outer end portion of the threaded bore 2 of the bushing 1.
A square tool'engaging head 8 is formed on the outer face of the cap 6 and extends axially therefrom to facilitate rotation of the cap. Suitable gaskets 9; and 10 are interposed between the cap and the bushing The gasket 9 encircles the outer threaded end portion of the bushing and is positioned between the outer face of the flange 3 and the inner edge of the cap 6 while the washer 1O encircles the stem or plug '1 and is positioned between theinner face of the cap and the outer end of'the bushing 1 in the manner as clearly shown in Figure 1.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing'description, that I have provided a wash out plug that will prevent leakage due to its simplicity, said wash outplug can bereadily and easily assembledor disassembled and will furthermore be positive and eflicient in carrying out the purposes for which it is designed; While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the in-' vention and the scope of the appended claim. v
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:
A wash out plug comprising a bushing ex.-.- ternally threaded whereby to adapt it to be fitted to a wall, and formed internally with threads, a flange formed on the outer face of 4 the bushing for engagement with the outer face of the wall, the projecting end of the bushing being also externally threaded, an internally threaded cap for threaded engagement upon the outer externally threaded end of the bushing, an externally threaded plug extending axially from the inner face of the cap for threaded engagement within the threaded bore of the bushing, a gasket encircling the plug for disposition between the inner face of the cap and the adjacent end of the bushing, and an additional gasket encircling the outer end portion of the bushing for disposition between the inner edge of the cap and the adjacent face of said flange.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
HARRY MARTAN WOODS.
