Description

W. A. TROTH ORNAMENTAL CAP FOR FLAGSTAFFS Feb. 25, 1930.
Filed Nov. 5, 1:929
- V Patented Feb. .2 5,
' wAL'rER A. ,zrnorrn, or
BROOKLYN; nn'w'vonx v onnAmEnrAL ica'r ronrnncsrn'rrs" i I Applicationfiled. November sembled for storing of the 'partsseparately after use.
Another aim of the invention is to provide means whereby the several parts may be asf'sembled to form J a substantially unitary structure with the fastening means cone "ce'aled. I j
s As will be pointed out hereinafter in de- 1 tail, it is proposed toprovide a fitting adapted to support a, spheroid and to combine therewith to produce a spherule 0r spherical body, said fitting being bored for the recep- I tion of the upper portion of a staff and be- P ing further adapted for threaded engagement with the shank portion of an ornament,
. thus securingthe parts in position as desired.- A further object of the invention resides in the provision of means whereby said fitting may be attached to the top section of a staif, in a manner to conceal said means, said 1 means also serving as a support for the usual lhalyards adapted to be attached to a flag,
; .pennant, burgee, or the like.
f The invention is further featured by the f [production of an article very attractive and neatin appearance and adapted to be manufactured at a most reasonablecost.
L "With these objects iniview, together with others-which will appear as the description proceeds, theinvention resides in the novel formation, combination and arrangement of parts, all as will be described more fully hereinafter, illustrated in the drawings, and
' particularly pointed out in the claims.
In said drawings; Figure 1 is a central vertical sectional view of the device, partly in elevation and showing the several parts in assembled relation.
5, 1329. Serial N0. 404,943. N
Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectio of the fitting removed. I
3 isa top plan view thereof..,-
Flg. 4 is an inverted plan view of the same.
Fig. 5 is a bottom plan'viewof the sphee roidalmember. r Referrlng now more in detail-to theaccom-. panylng drawings, wherein like characters UNITED STATE-Sf PATENT; 3 OFFICE al View of reference denote similar parts through-" out the several views, let. 5 indicate theftop section of an ordinaryfiagstafi", which may be provided with a ferrule 6 to receive-the reduced portion? of the end section 8. It
will be noted upon inspection of Fig.1 that said ferrule is provided with a bayonet slot 9 w1th1n which is received a headed stud 1O wherebysaid' top andendsections are coupledtogether, as is quite obvious;
The fitting; 11, hereinbeforev referred to, includes a main body portion, 12, having a bore 13, adapted'to receive the upper part of said end section 8. 'Saidfitting 11 isfurther provided with a circumferential flange 14, which presents a conv'exed outer surface, as indicated at 15,-the upper edge ofsaid flange 14. having an annular recess 16 for the reception of the rim portion 17 of the spheroidal member 18. As shown in Fig. 1 said member 18 isapertured as indicated at 19 through i which is passed the threaded shank20 of the screw member 21, the latter carrying an ornament 22,- which may assume any desired configuration. It will further be noted that said bore 13terminates adjacent the top" of said body portion 12 and that said top .is-pro-, videdwithja threaded opening 23, which receives said threaded shank 20 and maintains the parts in the position shown. Said opening 23 may be enlarged as shown at 24c for the reception of 'a lock-nut, 1 (not-shown) in which event said shan'k' 20 will-bev increased inlength as will be readily understood.
The said end section'8'is provided with a threaded bore 25, which registers with an opening 26in said body portion12 the screw 27 being engaged as shown to secure said end section-within said bore 13. It will be noted thatsaid screw. 27 is provided withan enlargedhe'ad' 28 which presents 'an annular groove 29 around which the halyards 30 may be Wrapped, the strands of said halyards passing through openings 81 and 32 in said flange 15.
In assembling the device, the end section 8 is first inserted in said bore 13 of said fitting 11 whereupon the screw 27 is applied. The halyards are now inserted through the openings 31' and 32 and knotted, or otherwise secured, to engage the head 28 of said screw; The spheroid member 18 is next inserted over the body portion 12 of said fitting 11, the" rim 17 snugly engaging the 1 'ecess l6,;vvhi1e its top internal portion abuts the top of said fitting 11, and as the aperture 19 -regi-St-ers" Withthe threaded opening 23, said shank portion 20 is applieduntil thepart21-snugly abuts said spheroid member and locks the parts in suitabler-elation.- Asclearlyshown in. F ig;. 1, the conveXed surface- 15 of said flange ld'blends with said spheroi-d member so that the point of attachment presents a smooth surface and the-said pointof attachment is substantially invisible. The end section- 8 may be now joined to the toprsectionfi by insertingsaid stud 10 in the bayonetslot- 9,'as Willbe Well'understood. In JViGW'OIE' the provision of the end section Sfthe device may be assembled andthen disassembled from the top section 5 Without sep'aration'of the-parts.
VVhilethe ornamentaltop or cap "is spe cifically for indoor-fiagstaffs, it may: be used for outdoorpurposes-asvvell. a
Various slight changes inight' "be" madein the general form and arrangement of the parts described Without,,cleparting-'-from the inventionyand hence I do not-limit myself to the precise details set forth, but'consider myself at libert to makesuch changes and alterationsas falrly fallwithin-the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
