Description

Filed April 1925 I41 I i 5 V INVENTOR GEORGE AARMSTRONG.
Patented Feb. 23, 1926.
UIM'I'ED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE A. ARMSTRONG, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO WILLIAM C.
' GREENE COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF RHODE ISLAND.
ARTICLE OF JEWELRY,
Application filed April 29, 1925. Serial No. 26,633.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnoncn A. ARMSTRONG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Articles of Jewelry, of which the following is a specification. 7
My invention relates to articles of jewelry wherein a stone or the like carries upon its exposed surface an ornament such as an initial, an emblem or other insignia and is constructed to permit substitution of ornaments upon the stone;
An essential object of my invention is to permit substitution of the ornament without removal of the stone from its setting.
A further object is to prevent accidental movement of the ornament upon the stone.
An additional object is to prevent such movement or rotation of the ornament relative to the stone by a means adapted for ,use upon an ornament of any contour or size.
The final purpose is to effect the above ends in an inexpensive embodiment.
My invention consists in the means for producing the results above specified substantially as hereinafter claimed.
In the accompanying drawings illustrating the principle of this invention and constituting a part of the specification,
Figure l is a front elevation of a finger ring embodying my invention,
Figure 2, a section thereof on line 2-2 of Figure 1,
Figure 3, a rear elevation of the ornament,
Figure 4:, an enlarged fragmentary section of a portion of the stone and ornament taken on line 22 of Figure l, and
Figure 5, a similar section of a modified form of my invention,
Like characters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views.
As herein illustrated, a finger ring 7 the article of ewelry forming the base or support for the ornament carrying stone. This ring includes a head portion 9 and shank portion 10. The former has a central opening 11 wherein is fixed by a heading tool or other usual or convenient means a stone or plate 12 having its rear face exposed, and having a hole 13 extending therethrough with oppositely disposed lateral or radial cavities la in the front face of the stone opening into the hole.
An ornamental member or plate 16 carries upon its rear face a tubular post 17 extending as a sliding fit through the hole 13 and having an internal thread 18. Integral with one end of the post 17 is an oblong plate 19, in this instance lozenge shaped, soldered to or integral with the back of the member 16 forming radial elevations 20 upon the post 17 and member 16 adapted to register in the correspondingly shaped cavities 14. The faces of the elevations 20 are preferably tapering, as shown in Figure 4:.
An attaching screw 23 has a shank 24: with a thread 25 engaging the thread 18. A thin transversely arcuate screw head 26 abuts against the member 12 and retains the ornament 16 tightly against the member 12.
In Figure 5 a solid exterior-1y threaded post 28 replaces the tubular post 1''? and an internally threaded tubular screw 29 is substituted for the solid screw 23.
It will be noted not only that the ornament 16 is removable without loosening or removing the member 12 from its seat, but that the elevations or projections 20 seated in the cavities 14 prevent the ornament from accidental circular movement upon the face of the stone.
I cla-im 1. In an article of the type set forth, a base provied with an opening, a stone fixed in the opening, provided with a hole and with a cavity in its outer face extending to the hole, an ornamental member upon the stone, a post upon the ornamental member extending into the hole and provided with a thread, an elevation supported upon the ornamental member registering in the cavity, and a screw provided with a thread engaging the first mentioned thread.
2. In an article of the type set forth, a base provided with an opening, a stone fast in the opening, provided with a hole and with cavities in its outer face adjacent the hole, an ornamental member upon the stone, a post upon the ornamental member extending into the hole and provided with a thread, laterally projecting elevations upon the post seated in the cavities, and a screw provided with a thread engaging the first mentioned thread.
3. In an article of the type set forth, a head portion with opening, a stone in said opening having its rear face exposed, and
having a hole therethroiugh with lateral cavities in its front face opening into said hole, an ornamental member having a tubular post with internal threads and an oblong plate forming radial elevations registering in correspondingly shaped cavities, an attaching screw engaging said threads the same serving to retain the ornamental member tightly against said stone and preventing accidental displacement and circular 10 movement of the ornament upon the face of the stone.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature.
GEORGE A. ARMSTRONG.
