:-'llhis: invention hasfor ts principal object 5x to provide a} noveltape having hook-fastenters col l soteditherewithin -desired spaced 'apart -relation; and the invention has for a further object to provide a novel method of applying such hook tape i toaffmarginal :3 edge portionof; a garment'opening, inxsuch m annergthat'the bodies of the hooks are covered and concealed with only'the bllls of the v. hooksexposed alongjthe garment opening edge; thefarrangement being such that aneat as and :le'ss bu'lky construction o-fhook supplie c ,meeting edgeyportion;forsgarment openings 130 Figure 2;.thexsame;being dr'awn onan enarsecl' cal mw i Qth'er obj ects of} present invention, not at fthis time moreiparticularly enumerated,
'will be clearly understood from thefollowing detailed description of'the sainje gz v c 1 The invention is clearly'illustrated n the I accompanying drawings,in which:+

may be formed from any suitable fabric or textile material either in single ply or in twop'ly formas may be desired. The hook fasteners may begof any desired form providing base wings or members 11 from which extends the shank portion 12 which terminates in the turned-over hook-bill portion 13.; Said hookfastenersare disposed in desiredlongitudinally spaced apart relation upon the tape 10,-with the base wings or members 11 there-- of superimposed on the rear side thereof, and with: the shank portions 112 directed toward and across an edge 14 of said tape so that the hook billp0rtions'13 extend around such edge 14% tooverlie theouter face of the tape, dVhen the hookfasteners are thus related to the tape,
the sameare initially secured thereto bya line ;of stitching 15 extending across the base "wlngsfor members ,11 thereof, said hne of stitching including at eachhook v fastener location groups of laterally extending tyingkstitches' l6 and 17 which are respectively sewn across the rear ends of the respectivebase wings ormeinbers '11 of each 11001; fastener,.said groups ofitying stitches lfi andi17 1bei11g connected by ump stitchinglS. ;It will be clearly evident thatthe detail arrangement and relation of the stitching 15 by which the hook-fasteners are initially secured to the tape may be variously modified, andneed not be limited necessarily to the arrangement and relation jnstdescribed above. For example, the line of stitching 15 may be sodlsposed as to permit ofthe extension of the tying stitches 16and .17 across the forward ends of said base wings or'me nbersll of the hook-fasteners with the rATsNT OFFICE LEo os AmonNEwA K, NEW JERSEY and by a novel method of application, which jump stitching 18 extending over the shanks 12 of the latter (as shown in Figure 4) or- (as shown in Figure 5), two lines of stitching 15 may be provided, with the tying stitches 16 and 17 extending across both the rear ends and forward ends of 'thehook-fastener base Wings, and with the jump stitching 18 either running across a portion of the hook-fastener body, as shown in Figures 4 and 5, or exteriorly of such body, as shown in Figures 1 and 2; or any other relation of tyin stitches and jump stitching relative to the hook-fastener body, which may be deemed desirable, maybe employed within the scope of the present invention. 1 i The hook-fastener provided 'tape, constructed and arranged as above described,1s relatively inexpensive and is reduced to a minimum of thickness orbulk; it therefore provides, per se, a novel economical product of its kind, in which the hook-fasteners are initially disposed in desired predetermined spaced relation one to another ready for application to a garment at one opening edge thereof, and so asto accurately cooperate with eye fastening means applied to the 0pposite opening edge of said garmentun any suitable manner familiar tothose skilled in the garment manufacturing industry The novel construction of hookfastener tape above described is adapted for application to the garment to be served thereby 1n is also a subject of-this invention, and which will now be described.
Referring to Figures 6 to 9 inclusive, the
but also serve to bound the sides of the latter so as-toprevent'undue lateral play or other displacement of the same. It will'be obvious that the described-secured together relation vo j bled under and back upon itself, in the direc- 1 tion of the arrow shown in Figure' f, thus I positioning the tape along the inner or rear side of the garment body along an opening edge thereof, while at the same time turnlng suchv garment edge to produce a hem like smooth finished edge portion of neat and 'trinrappearancc; When the tape is thus positioned, the edge 14.. thereof is outwardly presented 'inalignment withthe margin of c the garment opening, while at the same time the'hook bills are operatively disposed in proper exteriorly projecting relation to. the margnrof said garment opening (all as" shown in Figures 8 and 9). To complete the operative attached relation of the tape 10 to the garment a second-line of fastening stitches 23 is sewn through the folds of the garment and through the remaining edge portion ofthe tape, as 'shown'in Figures5-8 and 9. 1
' The structure above described novel form of hook-fastener I tapeand from the aforesaid novel method of applying the same to the garment,- not-only resulting from the use of produces a veryneatandstrong attachment 1 of properly spaced hook-fastenersfto'the de sired meeting edge'portion of a-garmennbut also reduces the bulk and thickness ofthe' fastener provided area of the garment to a min mum, while nevertheless adequately '3' concealing the bodies ofthe hookv fasteners per se, asis desirable. 1
It will be obvioust'hat'considerable tion'inthe form andv arrangement; of the tape attaching stitching 21, 22 and 23' is pos- V islble, and consequently I do not" limit mvselfespecially to theforms of such stitching "ShQWIl'lH the drawing's and-above described. 3" vwhich are s'hownanddescribed byway of 7 and merely as apreferable forniexample, thereof.
Having thus described mypresent inven- I tion,'I claim:
A method of attaching hook fasteners to garments, consisting in providing a'tape having ho'ok fasteners secured to' the under side thereof-with theirbills disposed around one I edge ofsaid tape and over its outer face; 5 then applying such tape" tothe outer face of the garment edge portion, with the edge fsal rtapQ With which said hook bills "are i' coincident inward, initially securing'saidj tape by stitching along said inward marginal edge portion thereof, at the same time forming reenforcingtack stitches at each side of the hook bill of each hook fastener; then folding under the marginal edge-portion of said garment to dispose 'theattached tape on the rear face of said garment; and finally stitching the free edge of said tape to the "garment body. I I
In testimony, that I claim the invention set iforth above I have hereunto set my hand l I thisSth day of July, 1925. 1
