Serial No. 194,498.
invention relates to improvements in door closer and electric interlock with zone control device. The object of my invention is to provide an elevator door closer in which a latch is provided for preventing the opening of the door until. the elevator has reached a position practically in a plane with the floor level and providing means whereby the electric interlock is first operated so as to break the circuit to 20 the inside without the operator of the elevator first setting the zone control cam shoes to engage the latch and operating mechanism.
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the elevator door is auizfitoinatically returned to its closed position and the latch automatically locking the operating mechanism and restoring the interlock to its normal position, closing the-circuit to the lifting motor so that the elevator can be so started after the door has been closed and latched.
Astill further object of my invention is to provide a simple, cheap and effective door operating and latching mechanism of this 35 and combination of fully setforth. j
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the shaft showing the door in a closed position with my improved operating mechanism and interlock attached thereto.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 22 of Figure 1, looking inthe direction of the arrow.
Figure 3 is an enlarged side elevation of the latch operating mechanism and interlock showing the latch released and the circuit broken so that the door can be opened by 50 hand.
parts hereinafter more character having certain details of structure My improved door closer and electric interlock is more particularly adapted to be I used on the type of door closer shown in the drawings, but it will be understood that it can be used on any type of door closer using levers, without departing from my invention. Referring now to the drawings, 1 repre sents the elevator shaft having the door opening 2 closedby the door 3, and supported by hangers 4 traveling on the tracks 5, all of which is of the well known type of door hanger, and which forms no part of the invention but is shown to illustrate that the door slides horizontally across the door opening 2. The side wall 6 of the elevator shaft is provided with a bracket 7 to which is pivoted at 8 the lever 9, having its outer end pivoted at 10 to the link 11, wich is pivoted at 12 to the door 3. The lever 9 is provided on its lower face With a rigid arm 13 to which is pivoted at 14 the piston rod 15 carried by the door closer cylinder 17, and the lower end of the door closer cylinder 17 is pivoted at 18 to the bracket 19 carried by the side wall 6 of the elevator shaft, whereby the link is drawn downwardly, causing the closing of the door, all of which is well known in the art. The arm 13 is bifurcated and has the transverse bar 20 at its lower end, and the bracket 7 has pivoted at 21 the latch 22, which extends through the bifurcated end of the arm 13, and is provided with a recess 23 adapted to receive the transverse bar 20, and thereby lock the lever 9 against upward movement, alvnd thereby preventing theopening of the oor. I
The elevator shaft is provided with a bracket 24 to which is pivoted at 25 the bell crank lever 26, carrying at its outer end a roller 27 adapted to be engaged bythe zone control cam shoe 28 mounted on the elevator 29. This cam shoe 28 is moved horizontally asshown in dotted lines, Figure 2 of the drawings, by means of a foot pedal or other means extending into the elevator convenient to the operator of the elevator. The,
bell crank lever .26 has pivotally connected at 30 the rod 31 which extends upwardly and has the offset portion 31 extending below the latch 22. The upper end of the rod 31 is pivot 37 is an upwardly extending rod38 which is pivotally connected at 39 to the electric interlock bar 40. This bar 40 is pref,- erablymade of bakelite, or other insulating material, and extends up between the spring contacts 41 and 42- of the electric circuit 43, extending to the controller on the elevator.
These contacts 41 and 42, asshown, are arranged in a housing 44 carried by the side wall 6 of the'elevator shaft. The upper end of the bar 40is providedwith a metal cap 46 and closes the circuit to the controller as shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
Figure 3 of the drawings shows the bar 40' moved upwardly with the metalcap 46 out of contact with the spring contacts 41 and 42 and thus showing the circuit to the controller broken so that the elevator can not be started.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that just prior to the elevator reaching the floor level or after it has reached the floor level, the zone control cam shoe 28 is moved outwardly by the elevator operator, as shown in Figure 2 of the drawings, engaging the roller 27 and moving the rock shaft 26 on its pivot 25. This movementfor'ces the rod 31 upwardly and the pin '36 carried by its upper end engages the upper end of the slot 35 carried by the link 34, and
forces the link upwardly swinging the latch 22 on its pivot 21. Simultaneous to this movement the rod 38 moves upwardly, carrying with it the bar 40 and moving the cap 46 from between the spring contacts 41 and 42, and breaking the circuit to the controller and thus preventing any movement of the elevator. This takes place before the latch has moved upwardly its full distance to bring the notch 33 away from the transverse bar 20 carried by the latch. hen the latch has reached its full upward movement it will. be
seen that the door can be opened by the ele: vator operator, and the latch'is moves upwardly and the pin 36 travels in the slot 35 and thus allowing for a lost movement to prevent the rod 31 from being moved upwardly any further. The transverse bar 20, carried by the arm 13, travels upwardly along the lower face of the latch beyond the notch, but the latch at all times remains within the bifurcated end' of the arm. After thedoor is opened, it is only necessary to release the door and the rod 16 of the door closer 17 causes a downward pressure on the arm 13 and moves the link 9 downwardly.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim is i V 1. The combination with an elevator door,
of a closer consisting of links, an arm car ried by one of said links, a p1voted latch extending through said arm and locking the same against movement, means operated by the elevator for raising said latch to allow the movement oflink for opening the door, an electric circuit breaker connected to the latchand adapted to break the circuit to the controller on the first part of themovement of the latch before it is wholly released.
2. Thecombination withan elevator door, I
tending through said arm and locking the same against movement, means carried by the elevator and controlled by the operator for raising said latch to allow the opening of the door, and an electric circuitbreaker connected to the latch and adapted to break thecircuit to the controller on the first part of the movement of the latch before it is wholly released.
3; The combination with an elevator door, of a closer consisting of links and an operating cylinder, an arm carried by one of said. links, a pivoted latch extending through said arm and locking the same against movement, means connected-with. the latch and extend ing in the path of theelevator for raising said latch to allow the movement of the link for opening the door, and an electric circuit a pivoted latch extending through said arm and locking the same against movement, a
pivoted operating means connected to the latch, a shoe carried by the elevator and adapted to engage the pivoted latchoperat- 1 ing means, and an electric circuit breaker connected to the latch and adapted to break the circuit to the controller onthe first part of the movement of the latch before it is wholly released.
r 5. The combination with an elevator door, of a controller consisting of links and an operating cylinder connected thereto, a pivoted latch for locking one of said links, a pivoted lever having a link connection with the latch and having means for allowing the latch to move independent of the link connection, and an electric circuit breaker connected to the latch and adapted to break the circuit to the controller 011' the first part 0 the movement of the latch.
