IVILLIAM H; HART- MAN, a citizen of the United'States, and a resident of Los Angeles, county of Los Angeles, and State of California, have in vented a certain new and useful Elevator- Door-Iloclr-Control Mechanism, of which I the following is a specification.
The invention relates to elevator shaft door locks, and particularly to means for operating the lock.
The invention possesses other advantm gcous features, some of which, with the foregoing, will be set forth at length in the tollowing description, where I shall outline in full that form of the invention which I have selected for illustration in the drawings accompanying and forming part of the present specification. In said drawings I have shown one form of the apparatus of my invention, but it is to be understood that I -do notlimitniyself to such form since the invention. as expressed in the claims, may beembodied in a pluralityofforms."
Referring to said drawings: Figure 1 is an elevation of a portion of an elevator car, partly in section, with the apparatus of my invention installed thereon. Figure 2 is an elevation of the door lock withthe front plate removed, showing the bolt on the door in locked engagement.
Figure 3 is an elevation of a portion of the. mechanism on the car in engagement with the lock, whichjhas been moved to open position.
Figure 4 is a view, partly sectional, from the bottom of the car, ofthe detent for the controlling handle.
The invention is applicable to elevators, operating in shafts having a plurality of sliding doors, one arranged at each floor. A lock secured to the structure of the ele- 23, 1920. Serial No. 425,969.
.vator shaft, is arranged at each door, and each door is provided with a bolt 2, which engages the lock, to hold the door in locked pos1tion. The lock is enclosed in a case 3, into which the bolt extends, and is provided with a latch lever 4:, which engages a notch in the bolt. The lever I is usually of the loell crank variety, one arm: 5 of which projects through a slot in the top of the casing 3; Pivoted to the caseand engaging the end of arm 5 is a lever 6, having a counterweight 7 placed to one side of the pivot, so that the lever 6 is normally inclined in such position to hold the latch 4 elevated and the bolt locked. The lever 6 is provided on its free end with a pin or projection 8, which projects into the elevator shaft and by engagement with which the lever 6 is rocked.
In the arrangement shown in 2, movement of the pin 8 to the right,- depresses the latch .4, so that the bolt 2 may be withdrawn. Means are provided, which move into position as the bolt is withdrawn for locking the latch in the depressed position and holdinn it in such position until the bolt is again inserted into the casing. Pivoted within the'casing is a weighted lever 9, having a notch 13 therein, which engages a pin 14 on the depressed latch when the bolt is withdrawn. A. second lever 15 is provided with a notch 16, which engages a pin 17 on the arm 5 as the bolt is withdrawn. One of these levers is suiticient to lock the latch in open position, but I prefer to employ both, so that the proper operation of the lock will be assured in the event of the failure of one of the levers to operate. When the bolt is reinserted into the casing, these levers are moved out of contact with the latch, which is then moved into engagement with the bolt by the overbalancing weight of the mass 7. Means are carried by the elevator car which move into engagement with the pin 8, as the car reaches a position at a floor and this means is then actuated to move the lever 6 to release the bolt. Mounted on the elevated car, by the parallel levers 18, is a substantially vertically disposed actuating member 19, having a substantially vertical slot 21 therein, flaring outwardly at the top and bottom, to insure the positioning of the pin in the slot.- The levers 18 are of such form that vertical movement of the outer of the car floor.

The initial opening movement of the door locks the latch ope and the operator may then remove his foot from. the pedal. Means are provided for preventing the operation of the car during the time that the shaft door is unlocked, or in other viords, during the time that the rod 22 is I in depressed position. The movement of the i an is controlled by the lever 25, to which is secured a gear 26' engaging the vertically movable rack 27. Secured to and movable with the rack is a rod 28, having a neck 29 of less diameter than the rod, which preferably disposed adjacent the under side Slidably mounted on the under side of the car floor is a slide 31, having a bifurcated end provided with a tapering slot, as shown in'l igfl. ll hen the slide 31 is moved to the left, the rod 28 is freeto move, but when the slide Ellis n'ioved to the right, it forms a barrier for the shoulders at either side of the neck 29, thereby precluding movement of the rod 28. It is understood that when the lever i moved to neutral position, that the neck is disposed in the plane of the slide and when in this position may be engaged by the slide v31, which then 'operatesas a barrier. The slide 31 is connec ed to the rod 22b the bell crank lever and'the adjustable link 132% andthe link .64, sojthat d ressionot' the rod 22 locks the controlle-ser in neutral position. The control lever is relieved of the weight of the rack and rod by the counterbalancin5 lever 36.
