Description

Of. 29, 1929. J; RlCE 1,733,906
' SWINGING DOOR CONTROL DEVICE. FOR ELEVATRS I Filed Sept. 15. 1927 patented Oct. 29, 1929 u, UNITED? STATES P AreNr orricif'f:*Av i JOSEPH menor CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, AssIGNon To ELnvATonooMPANY or AMERICA,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, VA CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS SWINGING-DOOR-CONTROL DEVICE FOR ELEVATORS Application led September 15, 1927. Serial No. 219,689.'
My invention relates to door controlled mechanism for elevators and has for its object the provision of a door` control particu- V larly applicable to doors provided at the different landings of the elevator shaft which are hinged to swing into and out of closing position'. l Y
It is a purpose of this invention to provide a door controlled mechanism of this characterwhich will lock the door in closed position so as to prevent unauthorized opening thereof but which willpermitthe door to be open when the elevator car is at the particular landing where lthe door is situated.v f Y vide a door locking mechanism which positively locks the door in closed position and which may be released by turning the knob of the ordinary door latch. I
Another object of this invention is to provide in combination with the door locking mechanism hereinbefore mentioned means for closing thel operating circuit for Vthe ele.- vator car when the door is in closed position and opening the same so as to prevent the operation of the'car unless the door is firmly locked in closed position. l f
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description proceeds when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. However, I wish it to be distinctly Vunderstood that I do not intendrto limit myself to the exact details shown and described but that I intend to avail myself Vof all such modifications as would occur to one skilled in this art and as fall within the scope of the claims. Y Y
In the drawings: Y j
' Fig. 1 is a side view taken from the interior of the'elevator shaft of the door controlled mechanism; Y
Fig. 2 isv an endvview of the door taken at right angles to Fig. 1 along the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and
Fig. 3 isa diagrammatic sketch showing the position of the door controlled contacts in the operating circuit for the elevator.
` Referring now in detail to the drawings, the numeral 5 indicates the casing surrounding the door opening provided at a landing in Itis also a purpose of this invention to pro-y the elevator shaft. A door 6 is hinged to the casing 5 as shown at 7 in Fig. 2 so as kto swing outwardly when 1t is desired to enter a caraty the landing. This door is provided with the regular door latch mechanism indicated by the latch 8, operating shaft 9 and door knob 10. The connection between the shaft 9 and.k
the latch 8 may be of any standard construction that is used for door latches.v l Q f It will bernoted that the shaft. 9 does not extend all the way through the door, but'isV provided with an enlarged portion 11 adjav cent the outer face of the door, which portion 11 is provided with a recess to receive the key 12 in case it isdesired to unlock the door from the outside. The key 12, obviously', isonlyV to be used in case of emergencywhen for some exterior of the elevator shaft.
lThe shaft 9 is provided with a crank arm 13 to which is connected the upwardly extending rod 14 guided onthe door by means of the bracket 15 and carrying at its upper end a roller 16 which is preferably made of insulating material. Adjacent the 'upper end purpose the doorrmust be opened 'fromthe of the rod 14 there is provided' a platell secured to the door and having the inwardly projecting locking member 18 thereon. This locking member as shownl clearly in Fig.2 is provided with a pair of teeth 19 and 2O adapted to engage corresponding teeth 21 and 22 on the lever arm 23 which isrpivoted to the housing 24 mounted on the door casing 5.v The shaft25 which serves as a pivot-V for the lever arm 23 also hasth'e arm 26 preferably consisting of a fairly heavy metal bar Y secured thereto. This arm extends toward ably the position in which the latch 8 is ex-V tended to latch the door to the casing 5.
Now when it is desired torelease `the door,` the door knob 10 is rotated in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 1 which raises the rod 14 and thereby the arm 26, and
through the shaft 25, the arm 23 so as to disengage the interlocking teeth on arm 23 and projection 18 and permit opening of the door. In yorder to prevent leaving the doors open due to carelessness on the part of the operator of the elevator,Iprovide'within thecasi ing 24Qtparf of Spring pressed contacts 28.
and 29 which are connected by means of the leads 3,0`and31and suitable wiring to the motog by-vvhich the'elevator car is driven".A
YAs is commonly the case, the elevator car" itself is equipped with `a control lever for operating the same, which control lever 33 also serves to close the circuit tothe'- motor 32.v Y v i-Gooperating with thespringl contacts 28 and:29 is the projectinglugx on thedoor 6' whichv lug hasta round head portion 36 eX- terding between the springcontacts 28` and 29 to' completes-the circuit when the. door is incl'osed position., rEhe projections 18 and 35am preferablymade of suchv length thaty spring contacts 28and 29 so as, to make a goodA connection. This makes it necessary for the elevator operator in order to start his carto completely close and lock the door at Y each landing. l Y
V As afurther means of insuring the permanent locking of the door, the arm 23 is pressed downwardly byA means of the spring 37 monnted in the' housing'24. l
, From the above description it `is thought Y 0i that theV construction and operation of Vthis device, will beclear to thoseskilled in the art Y arid; having thus .described my invention,
whatv- I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
