Referring in detail to the drawings:

l5U`- My device comprises a shell or drum 6 and including a pair of spaced preferably circular sheets 7 and 8 and a cylindrical rim or wall 9 secured to the peripheries of the sheets and having a portionl() extending beyond the rear sheet8 `to engage the flue sheet and pro# vide a chamber 11 between the end of the boiler and the adjacent sheet 8 of the shell, for purposes presently described.
The sheets 7 and 8 are preferably provided with similar edge flanges 12 secured to the cylindrical wall by rivets 13 and in sealed relation with the wall so that water may be fed through theshell as presently described.
' The shell is mounted concentrically with the boiler and smoke box by brackets such as 14 and 15, the bracket 14 preferably comprising a relatively long band portion 16 engaging the cylindrical wall of the shell and having legs 17 secured'to the smoke box for supporting the shell while the brackets 15 are supported from the smoke box for stabilizing the shell, the several brackets being preferably welded to the cylindrical wall.

An inlet21 is provided adjacent the lower portion of thershell',` preferably in the cylindricalA wall, and an outlet 22 in the upperY portion of the 'shell preferably in the portion ofthe .cylindrical Wall on the same side of the vertical axis thereof as the inlet, whereby feed water may pass upwardly through the shell toward the outlet.
' The gas-conducting `tubes are preferably installed y in horizontal series and selected tubes aresubstantially in alignment with the gas-conducting tubes of the boiler. Located between the several horizontal series of tubes are bailes 23 comprising plates having sido edges sealingly engaged with the sheets of the shell and ends'engaged with the cylindrical wall, and provided with ports 24 for Y passage of water upwardly through the plates. The baflies form chambers or compartments such as 25, 26 and 27 in which the tubes 18 extend.
rlhe plates may be welded to the shell sheets and theirfends may be providedwith flanges 28 for riveting to the cylindrical wall, the ports being preferably provided at opposite ends of adjacent plates and dividing the flange at the perforate end to.. for-1n pairs of ears 29 for attachment to the cylindrical wall.
The water entering the shell from the inlet and passing` over the lowest series of tubes will leave the lower compartment at the end opposite'the inlet and pass over the second series of tubes to the opposite end of the second compartment and so upwardly through the shell, the water thus coming into contact successively with each of the tubes to absorb heat conducted therethrough from the products of combustion.
The alignment of tubes in the shell with the boiler tubes facilitates cleaning of the same by ordinary methods and I provide removable plugs 30 in openings 31 for each compartment for access thereto for cleaning deposits made by the feed water kon the baffle plates and outer surfaces of the tubes. Y
Located in each of the tubes 18 is a heatradiating fin 32 comprising a flat plate portion 33 and a similar plate-like portion 34 and extending in a plane angular to the portion 32, each portion having a width equal to the diameter of the tube and the member having a length equal to the length of the tube.
The portions ofthe member 32 are in conductive relation with the wall of the tube, and provide relatively large surfaces for contact by gases to absorb heat therefrom and transmit the heat to the tube for absorption yby the water.
In using the invention the feed water entering the shell at the bottom passes over the tubes through which gas is conducted and comes into contact with all of the tubes,
What I claim and desire to secure by Let-y ters Patent is:
1. In combination with a boiler shell, Ya line sheet forming separate steam and smoke chambers in one end of the shell, a drum including front and rear head sheets spaced to form a water chamber, and means extending from the rear head sheet to the flue sheet forming in conjunction with rsaid flue sheet, a closed chamber in the smoke chamber betweenthe Adrum and flue sheet, brackets fixedly supporting the drum within the smoke y chamber, tubes extending throughthe boiler and flue sheet for delivering gases to said closed chamber, tubes extending through the drum and its head sheets for delivering gases from the-closed chamberto the smoke ch-amber, and water conduits lead-ing to and from the'drum. y Y
