COMBINATION GAS RANGE AND WATER HEATER Filed July 1'?, 1928 :s sheets-sheet s Pate-med Feb. 1s, 1930 UNITED STATES WILLIAM D. W'ILCOX, 0F IDAHO ,FALLS, IDAHO COMBINATION GAS RANGE AND WATER HEATER Application led July 17, 1928. Serial No. 298,344.
My invention has for its purpose the utilization of the heat carried away from the top and oven burners-ofv'a gasrangein the combustion products for the purpose of heating water. The manner in which this utilization is accomplished will be better understood by reference to the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows a front view. Figure 2 shows the range as viewed from above with a cross section across the water heater above the level of a gas burner. Figure 3. shows a vertical cross section on line 3-3 of Figure 1. A is an oven, heated by gas burners 1 and 2. B is a cooking t'op containing gas burners 5, 6 and 7. C is a. secondary heating chamber containing water coils 11. The products of combustion from burners 1 and 2 pass from the interior of A through 3 into C; A damper 4 is provided to close 3 if desired. B is enclosed except at the front and rear which is open to C unless closed oil' by damper 8. 10 is a passage fromthe cooking top B into C. 9 is a gas burner extending under the heating coils in C. 12 uis a flue outlet from The modeA of operation is very readily understood. When cooking is in progress the combustion of the gas-in burners 5,6 and 7 is supported by air entering the front by reason of the draft created by flue 12. Damper 30 8 will be open, damper 4 closed unless it is desired to bake at the same time. The combustion products pass up through 10 and C and escape through ilue 12, imparting a por'- tion of their heat to the water in pipes 11. When oven A is in use, the combustion products from gas burners land 2 pass through 34: being open, thence through 10 and C, and pass out through 12, giving a part' of their heat to the water in pipes 11. Where hot water is desired at a time when cookin or baking is not in progress, it may be obtained by lighting burner 9, air being supplied byv keeping open dampers 4 and 8.- I do not re- :strict myself to the particular design of parts shown in the drawings.
What I claim as new and desire to protect by the issuance to me vof Letters Patent is:
1. In a combined gas range and water heater, the improvement which comprises in W combination an' enclosed cookingl top, a.
chamber adjacent thereto enclosing water containers, gas burners in the cooking top, means for admitting air to the interior of the cooking top, a passage connecting it with the chamber enclosing water containers, 55 means4 for closing this passage, means for withdrawing combustion gases from the upper part of the chamber enclosing water containers.
2. In a combined gas range and water heat- 450l er, the improvement which comprises in combination, an enclosed cooking top, an oven below the cooking top, a chamber enclosing water containers, a passage from the cooking top to this chamber, means for closing this passage, a passage from the oven to this chamber, means for closing this passage, gas burners in the cooking top and burners underneath the oven, means for admitting air to thease burners, means for withdrawing combustion products from the upper portion of the chamber enclosing water containers.
3. In a. combination gas range and water heater, the improvement which comprises in combination an enclosed cooking top, a chamber enclosing water containers, burners in lthe cooking top, means for admitting air tol nature.
WILLIAM D. WILCOX.
