Description

Feb. 18, 1930. H. w. TOPAL 1,747,801
BAG 0R PURSE Filed Feb. 2a 1928 ATTORNEY WITNESS:
mar- Patented Feb. 18, 1930 UNITED STATES HARRY WILLIAM TOPAL,-'OF'*NEW YORK N. ;Y.
.ZBAG OR PURSE Application filed February 28, 1928. Serial No. 257,718.
This invention relates to improvements in ladies bags or purses of the type sometimes referred to as underarm bags, an object of the invention being to provide means whereby a single bag may be made to conform with the apparel of the user and thus Iproyide what may be termed an ensemble In ladies apparel, the tendency is to have various articles harmonize or match, and in accordance with this idea it is proposed to manufacture bags of the type referred to which conform or harmonize with various styles of shoes To provide a different bag for each style of shoe would not only involve considerable investment on the part of the manufacturer and retailer, but would also involve considerable outlay on the part of the purchaser. This disadvantage is overcome in the present invention by providing a bag Which is capable of use with a variety of different closure flaps, and as the latter completely alters the appearance of the bag,
a variety of styles may be provided at very little expense, the result being beneficial to the manufacturer and retailer, as well as to the ultimate purchaser. I 1
Another object of the invention is the provision of a bag having a detachable closure so fiap which is attached in such manner as to conceal the attaching means, so that the bag will have the appearance of a bag of the ordinary type. r
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of a bag constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the closure flap detached from the bag.
Figure 3 is a like view of the bag.
Figure 4 is an end view partly in section.
Figure 5 is a section taken substantially on the line 5-5 of Figure 3.
Referring to the drawing in detail wherein like characters of reference denote correspontling parts, the reference character 10 indicates a bag or purse of the type some-- times referred to as an underarm bag. This bag may have the usual or any number of pockets or compartments and may be of any desired size, material or shape.
The reference character 11 indicates a closure flap for the bag, which is ordinarily formed from an extension of the back of the bag, the flap extending over the front face 0 of'the bag and closing the pockets. In bags ofthis style, the closure flap covers or practically covers the entire front-faceof the bag.
The present invention resides in making this flap removablean'd in providing 'a numher of different flaps, so that a bag with a number jof 'fl'aps may be purchased and any one of-the flaps readily secured to the bag, sothatthe appearance of the latter will conform Olfllitl'lhOIllZG with the shoes or other articles of wearing apparel oft he user. For this purposeftherear face 12 of the bag is provided along its upper edge with a pocket 13 which is adapted to receive the edge 14 of the flap 11. The inner wall of this pocket 5 provided with a plurality of snap fastener members 15 which are adapted to be engaged by snap, fastener members 16 carried by the edge 14 of the flap. This edge 14 may be of the same material as the flap, or it may consist of a strip of different material.
The ends of the pocket 13 are provided with gussets 17 so that the pocket may be conveniently opened as shown in Figure 3 of the drawing to permit the edge of the flap to be .8 conveniently secured in place. The outer wall of the pocket 13 is provided with snap fastener members 18 which engage snap fastener members 19 carried by the inner wall of the pocket, so that after the edge of the flap is positioned within the pocket, the latter may be closed.
The flap is preferably cut away at its corners as shown at 20 so that it may be readily inserted within the pocket and allow for connection of the fastener members 18 and 19. In addition to receiving the end of the flap, the pocket 13 is also intended to receive cards or other fiat articles, the fastening members 18 and 19 being near the corners of 0 the pocket so as to leave the intermediate portion open.
From the foregoing description and accompanying drawing, it will be seen that by means of the invention, a single bag may be purchased for use with a number of different flaps and by changing the flaps, the bag may be made to conform in appearance or harmonize with the style of the shoes of the user. In addition, it will be unnecessary to change the contents of the bag from one bag to an other as where different bags are used, the user having only to change the closure flap Without disturbing the contents of the bag.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construct-ion and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described the invention what is claimed is 1. ,A bag of the character described having a pocket extending along the upper edge of its rear face, a detachable flap adapted to extend over the front face of and close the bag, means to detachably secure one edge of the flap within said pocket and means to close the pocket.
2. A bag of the character described having a pocket open at the upper edge of its rear wall, a detachable flap co-extensive in length with the length of the bag for closing the latter,'a relatively short rear edge for said flap to be received within the pocket, and means to secure saidedge within said pocket,
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
HARRY WILLIAM TOPAL.
