PATENT "()FFIca.
MERRITT G. BEYMEB, OF GRESTON, IOY'VA.
IMPROVEMENT lN CHIMNEY ANI) STOVE-PIPE CLEANERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,762, dated March 14, 1876; application filed February 19, 1876.
mer cut away to show the cleaner.
, When stove-pipes enter stub-chimneys near the base, the soot dropping down the chim-- ney and the dust and dirt accumulating on the bottom rise to a height even with or above the stove-pipe opening, and the draft is choked thereby. The only way provided at present to relieve this difficulty is to take down the stove-pipe and rake the soot and dirt through the pipe-hole, which is a great annoyance and inconvenience.
The object of my invention is to overcome this objection; and it'consists in a cleaningdevice having a scraper located in the chimney and arod running through the stove-pipe to the first elbow, where it passes through the side of the pipe to enable it to be operated by hand.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use in y, invention, I will proceed to describe the manner in which 1 have carried it out.
In thesaid drawings, A is a stub-chimney having its base at a. A stove-pipe, B, enters the hole I), and has an elbow, c, from which the pipe passes to the stove. In the chimney is placed a sheet-metal disk, D, having a diame ter about equal to that of the stove-pipe B. From the center of this disk a rod, 0, passes through the pipe 0 to the elbow c, where it passes to the outside in a straight line, and'is formed into a handle, i. Arranged around the edge of the stovehole, and passing across the chimney, are a series of rods, a n,inclos1ng the disk D and serving to support and guide it.
When the dirt and soot have so accumulated evident that the disk D may be used as a damper when desired.
' Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The stub chimney A and stovepipe B, in
combination with the rod 6 and-disk D, as
described, for the purpose set forth.
2. The rods a a, stub-chimney A, and stovepipe B, in combination with the rod 6 and disk D, as described, for the purpose set forth.
