IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINATION GUN-TOOLS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,759, dated March 14, 1876; application filed August 27, 1875.
To all whomjt may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBREOHT EDWARD BARTHEL, of Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a Gombination Gun-Tool and Dog-Whistle, of which the following is a specification:
My invention has .for its object to combine, in a neatand compact tool, for sportsmens use, a dog Whistle, screw driver, nipplewrench, priming-needle, and extractors for central-fire and pin-fire shells, most of which Will be found useful, ii' not essential, by all who use a gun.

Fig. 4L is a partial perspective view of the whistle, showing a modiiication to adapt it to unscrew the nipple of a muzzle-loading gun.
In the drawing, A represents a metal cylinder, divided into two parts by a diaphragm,
a.y A notch, b, is cut in one side, and nearer the end is a bridge-piece, c, to form awhistle, such as is ordinarily used as a dog-call'. The mouth-piece of the whistle is a hexagonal socket, C, to lit the uut which secures the firing-pin of' a center-fire breech-loading gun, in order to remove the pin, which frequently becomes necessary in constant use ot' the gun.
Where the tool is specially designed for use ou a muzzle-loader, I modify the socket to the form shown at C in Fig. 4, to lit ou and unscrew a broken nipple, and topscrew on a fresh one.
At the other end of the whistle a transverse slot, c, is out, in which to place the back of a knife or a nail, or any other object that Will serve as a lever or handle where force is required to turn the tool. The other end of the Whistle is closed by a screw-cap, B, having a ring, f, sprung into sockets in its sides. The outer end is formed into a screw-driver, g, While the inner end has a needle, Il, inserted in it, which can be used to pick out a stopped vent.
Thev screw-driver can be turned by using the ring as a lever. A hole, c', is made in it, to slip over the pin of a pin-lire shell, to extract the latter from a gun-barrel. This hole may be, however,'made in the lnouth-piece of .the whistle.
The outer part of the ring is formed with a flat space, to span the base of a center-fire shell, and With a diagonal hook at each end of said space, to grasp lthe base ange of the shell, in ,order to extract it from the gunin case it should stick and the gun-retractor fail to remove it, as frequently happens.
What I claim as my invention is- The combination, with the combined tool, substantially as' described, of the shell-extractor z' and the ringf, having the shell-extractor 1), substantially as described and shown.
