Description
W. ORMSBY.
SASI-FASTENER.
No.174,700. Patente-March 14, 1876.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM ORMSBY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF HIS RIGHT TO EDWIN A. ORMSBY, OF SAME PLACE.
IMPROVEMENT IN SASH-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Lettersl Patent No. 174,700, dated March 14,1876; application tiled August 12, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM ORMsBY, of Boston, in the county of Suolk and State ot' Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Window-Fasteners, of which the following is a description suftciently full, clear, and exact toenable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specilication, in whicht Figure l is a sectional view, showing a part of the casing removed.
My invent-ion relates more especially to that class ot' windows which are used in railwaycars and similar vehicles, and consists in a novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as hereinafter more fully set forth and definitely claimed, by which a verysimple, cheap, and effective device of this character is produced.
The nature and operation of my invention will be readily obvious to all conversant with such matters from the following description:
In the drawing, A represents the easing, and B the glazed sash, which is fitted to slide vertically in the ways or runlets D D. Attached to one side of the sash there is a catch or stud, E, and secured in the ruulet or way D there are stops or catches I I, with which the stud intersects and enga-ges.
The way D is enlarged to permit of the lateral movement of the sash, which is provided with the spring E, one endet' which is secured in the sash at G, and the other works in a slot at F.
The stud H is inclined so that when the sash is raised it will pass the stops I I, the spring E yielding and permitting the requisite lateral movement ot' the sash for that purpose.
It will be obvious, therefore, that when the `sash is elevated and the spring E left free to act, the stud H will be caused to intersect and engage with one of the stops I, and the sash retained in position, and that to lower the sash it must be moved laterally, to compress the spring E and disenga-ge the stud and stop with which it-interseets and engages.. y,
, The spring is designed to press against the side of the'way D constantly, and there is a knob, O, attached to the lower rail of the sash, for the purpose of raising and lowering the window.
Having thus explained my invention, what I claim is- The Window B, provided with the inclined stud H, and spring E, in combination with the casing A, having the enlarged way D', and the ordinary way D, provided with the stop I, substantially as set forth and specified.
WILLIAM ORMSBY. Witnesses:
C. A. SHAW, H. E. METCALF.
