Description

415 bed?.` Where this arran ement is used abath- Patented eb. 11, 1930 UNITED sTAres PATENr OFFICE Boss .L ELLswOn'rH, .or woonsroox, ILLINoIs, AssIeNon 'ro HOLMEs DIsAPrnaaINe Jann COMPANY, or Woonsrocx, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS 13E-n MOUNTING `Application led December "This invention relates to; bedmountings and is particularly designed for use in conjunction with what `may be generally `termed concealed beds of the pivotedtype; 1
It `has for-lits object theprovision of a mounting-between the pivot `and the bed,`
whereby the bed may be `movedlaterally with tion ofthe bed, at the same time permitting respect to Vthe pivot. f
With the above and other` objects inview,
1Q asl `will be apparent, "this invention consists inl the construction, combination, and ar` rangement` ofparts allas hereinafter` more fully described, claimed `and illustrated inthe accompanying drawings wherein:
"Figure lis a frontelevation of a bed mounted in accordance` with thepresent in` ventionV illustrating the bed elevated.`
Figure i2 `is a `side elevation 'of a bed mounted in accordancelwithithe present 20 invention with the bed "in its `lowered or horizontal operative position.
`Figure 3 isa verticalsectiontaken along line 3f-3of Figure 2 toillustrate themounting `forming the subject matter of the present invention.
1 Figure lis a horizontalsection takenalong line44r` of Figure `2 and'illustrates `the co` operation between thehead end of the bed and the'doors of a `dressing room oricloset,
both in its operative and concealed positions.
Figure 5 is la vertical section taken along# of construction of the mounting connecting the: head end of the bed `tothe pivot.
involves economy of space" and: for` this reason the `bed isfrequently concealed in a room or extremely large` Jcloset which serves the,
double purpose of beinga dressing room and 1 a closet both for clothes and concealing the room is frequently provided, openinginto the dressing room Therefore itis desirable and Concealed beds have been andare now more purposes-than was a bedroom. Usually this itlfiafraisedeand. positioned within the `dress# 1, 192e. MseriarNo. 151,893.
ing `room or when itis lowered `into themain free access from the main room into the dressing room. j i
It is the object of the presentinvention to provide a pivoted mounting for a bed of such a characterthat when `the bed is raisedor elevated it `may be swung about its pivotal mounting into and out off the dressing room or closet. A movement of the bed laterally with respect to the pivot is provided so that after the bed has been placed in the dressing room orafter it has been placed in the main room it may be moved `to leave part of the aperture or portal between the `rooms clear to permit unobstructed movement between the dressing room andthe main room and the operation cfa door to act asa closure for the clear portion ofthe portal'between said rooms.` A 1 Reference being had more particularly to thet` drawings, 10 designates the frame of a portal `or doorway between the main room andlthedressing room of an apartment. This portal or doorway isadapted tol be closed by the doors 11 and 12. The door 12 is hinged to the frame 10 to swing relatively thereto, while the door 11 is secured to avertical` pivot bar llrmounted between the top of the frame 10 and the floor.` The position of this bar is suchthat itis located centrally with respect to the width ofthe door 11. When' the door i 11 is swung with the bar 14 to occupy one position, the bar 14 is within the dressing room while a reversal of the position of the door exposes the bar 141:0 the .main room. By reference to Fig. 2 it will be observed that thepivotss15 ofthe bar 14 are located under the door 11 so that the swinging of the door about said pivots 15` actually moves `the bar into and out of the dressing room. vBy so arranging thepivot-s 15, the door 11 isv` a1-l ways coplanar with the door 12when the latteruis closed, irrespective of whether the bar` 14 is located within the dressing room or in the main room.
l The bed designated generally as B in Fig. 2 is carried and supported by the bar 14. The head end 16 of the bed is positioned adjacent and parallel to the rod 14 and somewhat above the floor'. A. pair of horns 17 are se. cured to the lower end of the head end l of the bed and pivotally support the bed between lo their terminals. Therefore the bed B may be swun to and from horizontal or operative positlon as disclosed in Fig. 2 fromand to the vertical or inoperative position which it is shown as occupyingin Fig. 1.V When 'the 15 bed B is positioned as disclosed in Fig. 1 it rests substantially parallel to the head end 16 and the bar 14.
In order to mount the bed B and head end 16 thereof, on the bar 14, a rectangular frame im 18 is rigidly fixed to the bar 14 by the brackets 19 at a point ad'acent the lower portion of the head end 16. 'l of this Viframe. 18 are provided at their ends with the relatively large projecting rollers @g 20, the edge of each roller 2O being provided with a groove 21 for thereception of rails carried by the head end 16 as will be hereinafter more full described. Thus'it will be apparent that t e frame 18 is rigidly secured to the bar 14 adjoining its lower end and has a air of rollers projecting above the ends o its upper side and a similar pair of rollers' 20 pro ectin 'below the ends of its lower side. his rame 18 moves with, and as a part of, the bar 14 and door 11.
Secured to the head end 16 of the bed and to the lower portion thereof for cooperation with the rollers 20 are a pair of rails 22, U-shaped in cross-section and connected at their ends by the transverse pieces 23, thereby creating a second frame on the head end 16 of the bed.` Theserails 22 extend completely j across the inner face of the head end`16 of the bed andare concealed by said head end for the reason that no portions thereof project beyond the limits or confines of the head end 16. l Thus the only portion of the mounting mechanism which is exposed when the bed is in either raised or lowered position is the bar 14 which extends above the head end 16.
The rails 22 being respectively located above and below the sides of the frame 18, one side of each of the rails 22 maybeengaged by the rooves 21 of the adjoining rol- 1ers 20 where y the rails 22, togetherwith the head end 16 which carries the bed B may slide on said rollersand move relatively to the frame18, the bar 14 and door 11.
In practice, the bed B is raised to occupy a position substantiall parallel to the head end 16 of the bed. en this is done the entire structure is supported by the bar 14' 05 said bar 14 and door v11. It lwill be observedy he upper and lower sides by reference to Fig. 4 that the width of the bed and head end 16 thereof is considerably greater than that of the door 11 and nearly approximates the combined widths of the doors 11 and 12. Therefore when the rod 14 is located in the main room as illustrated in full lines in Figure 4, the bed B and head end 16 may be moved relative to the rod 14 and to the left in Fig..4 until the bed B and head end 16 are entirely clear of the door 12.' The bed may thenbe lowered to the position disclosed in Fig. 2 and the door 12 will be swung about its hinges whereby free access may be had into the Adressing room to the rear of the doors 11 and 12. This permits the dressing room to be closed by the doors 11 and 12 when the bed is in use and yet permits unobstructed access to be had thereto.
When it is desired to return the bed to thev dressing room it may be elevated so that it rests substantially parallel to the door 11 and bar 14 after which the door 12 may be opened and the bed moved relatively to the bar V14 to occupy the position illustrated in full lines in Fig. 4 and the entire mechanism swungabout the pivots 15 to reverse the po` sition of the door 11 as shown in Fig. 4 thereby positioning the bed within the dressing room and presenting the `plain surface of the door 11 to the main room. The bed B and the head end 16 may then be moved relatively to the. door 11 and the bar 14, i. e., to the left in Fig. 4, referring to the dotted line positions whereby the opening of the door 12 may again be cleared so that readyunobstructcd access ma vbe hadinto and out of the dressing room tlirough said door 12 which may be closed if desired. v
, The present structure thereforeprovides a mountin for a bed whereby the bed may be moved re atively to its mounting, irrespective of whether the bed is located in the mainV mounting, with the exception of a portion of' the bar 14, is completely concealed by the head end 16 no matter what lateral position the l end occupies with respect to said bar.y
What is claimed is:
The combination with a bed end, of a pivot bar therefor, a substantially rectangular frame secured medially of its length to said bar to project laterally upon each side thereof, grooved rollers mounted in said frame and projecting above its upper horizontal side and below its lower horizontal side and a second relatively longer rectangular frame, including side rails, fixed to the bed end, said rails being disposed above and below the horizontal sides of said first frame and substantially parallel thereto, to be received in the grooves of the aforesaid rollers, whereby the second frame may move relatively to the first frame.
