Description
Feb. 11, -1930. E. ADAMSON COLONIC THERAPY APPARATUS Filed uw 2o, 192s .lll lill -if Patented Feb. 1l, 1930 PATENT OFFICEv EMMA ADAMSON, OF DENVER, COLORADO coLoNIo THERAPY APPARATUS Application filed December 20, 1928.
This invention relatesto colon irrigation apparatus, for use in colonic therapy and has tor its principal'object the provision of a simple and eicientunit, in which adjustable 5 leg andtoot supports, irrigation apparatus,
and suitable water supply and drainage facilities will be convenientlycombined.
Another object of the invention is to so construct the apparatus that the flow of the solution to the patient and the discharging fluids will be constantly in view of the operator.
Still another object is to provide convenient means for regulating the pressure, temperature and content of the treatment solution. l
A further object is to provide a sanitary method of disposing of all-waste and discharged solution. A f
A still further object' is to provide means for supporting a suitablecover or curtain so that the patient will be entirely concealed from view during the operation. Y
Other objects and advantages reside in the detail construction of the invention, which is designed for simplicity, economy, and eiiiciency. These will lbecome more apparent from the following description.
In the following detailed description ot the invention reference ishad to the accompanying drawing which forms a part hereof. Like numeralsl referto lkeparts in the drawing and throughout the description.
The drawing illustrates a perspective view lot the complete invention. v Y
The invention comprises va drainage tank 10, supported from the floor on suitable legs 11 and provided with a Vdrain pipe 55. The apparatus is placed adjacent an operating -table such as indicated in brokenline at 53 which should substantially align with the front edge ofthe tank 10. Extending above the tank 10, Vis a rear splash hood 12 and a side splash plate 13. Within the splash hood 12 two vertical, tubular supports 14 and 15 are secured, separated by a cross bar 16. A toot rest extendsv between vertically slidable littings 17 on the tubular supports 14 and 15. The iittings 17 Vcan be locked in any desired vertical position by means of set screws 18, so that the height of the foot rest 16 can be varied as desired. f p
Serial No. 327,257.
.v For the use of children an auxiliary foot rest frame 19 is provided. The auxiliary foot rest frame is carried from a pair of horizontal supporting bars 2O which slide within fittings 21 on the vertical standards 14 and 55 15. The fittings 21 are provided with clamp screws 22 byv means of which the bars 20 can be locked in any desired horizontal position.
A foot rest 23 extends between the side bar of the frame 19 and can be locked in any de- 6o sired vertical position by means of set screws 24.
The support 15 terminates above the splash hood 12 in' a terminal nut 25 which holds a curtain hook 26 in place. The support 14 is 65 provided with al similar curtain hook 27 and terminates above the splash hood 12 in a clamping T `28, provided with a suitable clamp screw 29. A hooked standard 30 slides within thej T 28 and into the support 14. 70 The standard 30 can be secured at any desired height by means of the-clamp screw 29.
The standard 30 supports a percolator 31 by means of a bale 34. The percolator 31 is closed by a' cap 33 provided with a hinged vdoor 32, through which medicines and chemicals may be introduced into the percolator. A suitable thermometer 35 can be carried by the cap 33 to indicate the temperature of the solution in the percolator.
W'ater is fed to the percolator 3l through a supply tube 36 from a suitable mixing valve 37. The mixing valve 37 is fed from hot and cold water pipes 38 which extend into the tank 10 and terminate in any of the usual .faucets on the interior thereof to provide convenient means for flushing the tank.
A shelf 39 is hinged at 40 on a supporting bracket 41 extending from the side of the tank 10. The shelf 39 carries a clamp 42 which holds a glass Y-shaped connection tube 43 in place thereon.
The treatment solution is Jfed fromthe percolator 31 through a feed tube 44, which extends to a compression bulb 45 thence to one of the legs of the Y-shaped tube. A suitable shut-oit 46 is provided to control the flow through the tube 44. A discharge tube 47 extends Jfrom the other leg of the Y-shaped tube 43 and discharges into the tank 10, con- 100 ftientscfeet as desired. l
trolled by a suitable shut-off 48. A colon tube 49 extends from the stem of the Y-shaped tube 43.
Atl the side of the splash hood 12, brackets are secured for attaching a pan rod 51 to support any desired pan 52 for the reception of instruments, lbottles, etc., whichare desired within reach .of :the operator.
In use, the shut-ott' 46 is first closed. The desired amount of water is fed into .the percolator 81 through the supply kktube '36, the temperature of the water being-controlled by the mixing valve 37 and the thermometer 35. If any medicines are tohe used in the parrticular operation they are then placed in the solution in fthe perco'lator .through the fhinged door "The 'patient is fplaced :upon his back .upon the #operating 'table 53 with the anus extending slifghtlyloverftheedge of tt'hejtank 1.0. Additional pressure can be obtained, 'if necessary, rby closing kthe shut-0E 46 before operating the-compression'bulb-45. The operating pressurecan be adjusted Vby afa-ryling-the extensionofthe standard-"30.
After the desired amount o-soglutionh-as been usedt'he shut-0E 46 "is closed fandthe shut-oit 48 is opened to allowfthe-solutionto flow from the patient "'back through the Y- tube 43 and discharge 7intro the "tank `10 through :the discharge hose 47. The nature of the discharge can be 'observed by the operator through the glass xY-itube43 so V'that A14-diagnosis can be made as to the treatment requirements It necessary, 4:the .loW can vbe stopped for this purpose by closing theslhutoff 48. f i a If an extreme elevated position ofthe lower 'limbsfis -desired'or if the patient is a-child of small stature, the frame l19 is secured in place within the pfittings21. 'The 'frame l19 'can then :be "moved .toward the -patient Vand secured means of the'clamp screws '22 to Vforce' the'knees upwardly over the body, `or 'the -rod 23 can be raised to elevate Ithe jpa- 4The shelf 39 can be swung upon its hinge 40 to a vertical position alongside the bracket 41 so as not to interfere with placing the patient in position. The clamp 42 will prevent the Y-tube 43 from falling from the shelf when in the tilted position.
It will be noted that by the arrangement o :this apparatus .the patient can .be entirely covered 5 the scattering or spilling of solutions and discharges is entirely prevented; andthenature ofthe discharge as well as the action othesolution is constantly in View of the operator, yet all discharging material is vventirelyenclosed zfor ythe operators protectlOn. yWhilega specific #form of bbeiimprovelnt has been describediand illustrated zheminr is desire-zd to beunderstmd thatithenamefmlg be varied, Within the scope of the k.llrppnndd claims, withoutcfm thespizitd Tg5 the invention.
