FRANK A. DENQUER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
PHYSICIANS TABLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed J une 14, 1910. Serial No. 566,812.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. DENQUER, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, New York city, county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Physicians Tables, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. y
In the use of physicians tables for treatment and examination, it heretofore has been the practice to use in'connection with such tables, when necessary, a removable drainage pad in conjunction with a waste receptacle, the use of both of which articles is found to be very inconvenient. In my present invention, the top of this table has a substantial part thereof at the rear of the opening, fixe and has a tilting supporting-frame which is provided with a permanent basin or drainage compartment having suitable waste pipe connections and provided with faucets for supplying water to the basin at a convenient point, the basin being mounted in said tilting-frame and provided with a removable cover by which the basin may be concealed, if desired, and the surface of such cover may be used as part of the surface of the table when desired.
' I have illustrated a type of my invention in the accompanying drawings, wherein;
Figure 1 is a perspective View of a physicians table having an adjustable top section, which is provided with my improvements, and with the removable cover of the basin shown as open to give access thereto. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the apparatus shown in Fig. 1, the plane of the section being indicated on line 2-2, Fig. 1, and with the cover of the basin partly closed. Figs. 3 and 4 are side views of the table, with the table top shown in different adjusted positions.
Referring to the drawings, in which like numbers of references designate like parts throughout, 1 indicates the base or lower part of a physicians table and in which are arranged a set of drawers 2 at one side and a compartment or cupboard 3 upon the other side. The upper part or section of the table comprises a rectangular frame having the sides 4,. 5, deep basin, as well as the usual racks and gears for adjusting the back-rest 8 which is hinged at 9 to the frame and which constitutes one part of the table top, the other part of the table top being the part 10 which is secured to the frame and beneath which is arranged the basin with its appliances. The rack-rest 8 is adjusted in angular position relative to the frame by means of a toothed rack 11 which is operated through -means of the usual handle 12 by means of a pinion, which is not shown but which is well known in this class of devices. I At one end of the frame is arranged the usual leg-rest 13 which is pivoted at 14 to the side 5 of the frame and at the free end of the back-rest 8 is a head-rest 15, which is pivoted at 16 to the back-rest, and this head-rest is con- Patented Oct. 1. 1912.
6 and 7, which are sufficiently to contain the necessary parts of the structed in the usual way to permit it being adjusted at different angles relatively to the back-rest. The frame itself, together with all of the parts mounted thereon, is so constructed that it, may be adjusted in inclined position at a desired angle, as indicated in Fig. 4 by operating a handle 17 which is fixed to a shaft 18 which is connected with the usual gears, which are well known in this class of devices for adjusting this part of the apparatus.
The part 10 of the table top is formed I I with an'opening 19 and beneath this'and within the frame is arranged in fixed position a basin 20'which is shown as mounted on a; suitable supporting frame 21 secured within the frame. This basin may be made like'any of the ordinary basins used for household purposes or of any suitable enameled ware and it is provided on the side toward the center of the table with a fixture comprising a nozzle 22, hand valves 23 and 24, which control the connected water pipes 25 and 26, respectively, oneof whichis supplied with'hot water and the other with cold. This fixture isan ordinary 1 I one like that usedin bath-tubs or like places and by means of which the-water maybe obtained either entirely from the hot water supply or entirely from the cold water supply or partly from each of these supplies so as to deliver water from the nozzle 22 at a certain desired, temperature. This basin is also provided with a wzfste outlet 27 having a strainer 28' placed therein, and this outlet may be controlled by an ordinary hand plug as in the ordinary wash basin. Within the base part 1 of the table are arranged vertical metal pipes 26 and 27 which are connected with the hot and cold water pipes and the waste outlet of the basin, by means of flexible tubes 25", 26 and 27 respectively. These flexible tubes or pipes connecting the rigid pipes in the base of the table with the rigid fixtures beneath the basin are made with considerable slack or extra lepgth in order to permit of the end of the table top, which contains the basin, being raised to any required height in the tilting adjustment of the table top, as hereinbefore referred to and as indicated, for instance, in Fig. 4. The common nozzle 22 of the combined hot and cold water faucet is shown as having removably attached thereto, a flexible pipe 28, which has a nozzle 29, and which may be readily moved to any particular point where its application is required. The lower ends of the metal water pipes 25 and 26 and the waste pipe '27 are attached with suitable water main connections and waste pipe outlets by means of flexible pipes 25, 26 and 27, respectively, in order to permit the table to be slightly moved without injuring the metal pipe connections though, of course, the lower ends of these pipes may be connected in any well known way with their respective pipe connections, v
The opening 19 in the top of the table is provided with a removablecover which in the present instance is shown as an ordinary roll top cover made in two sections 30 and 31, one section being arranged at each of the side edges of the opening, and operate in the usual guide-ways 32 and 33, respectively. In Fig. 1 both'of the roll to sections or doors are shown as opened whi e in Fig. 2, the roll top section 31 is shown as closed while the other one 30 is open.
When it is desired to have access to the able cover may be used for entire basin both of the cover sections 30 and 31 are opened, as shown in Fig. 1, and when the basin is not to be used, the two sections of the cover are closed and thereby afford a firm supporting surface similar to that afforded by the part 10 of the table top or the back-rest 9 of the top. Of course, any well known form of removthe basin though I have shown only a well known form of roll top cover. It will thus be seen that this drainage compartment or basin, which is provided with all. the facilities of ordinary basins, is so arranged in relation to the adjustable table top or section, that it in no way interferes with the movement or adjustment thereof and it is at all times ready to be called; into service. When it is not to be used, it is readily covered and concealed without the cover thereof in any way detracting from the use of the table top as a resting surface for the subject. As the basin is equipped with a hot and cold water supply and a waste outlet, it can be kept perfectly clean and sanitary thus giving it an important advantage over the old form of drainage pad and waste receptacle. The subject who may be under treatment, may seat himself or herself over the open basin and upon the part 10 of the top and lean back against the back-rest 8, so that the nozzle 29, may be readily applied to the desired part of the subject to wash or treat such part with water at the desired temperature, and the wash resulting from such application is readily received in the basin from where it is carried off by the outlet to the sewer connection.
It will be noted that the removable section of the adjustable top constitutes a seat for the patient when the top is arranged like a chair, as shown in Fig. 3, and that in such position the thighs of the patient rest upon the removable section. The opening 19 in the top being about fourteen inches in length, there is provided at the rear of the opening a fixed section or part on which the buttocks of the patient may rest when the top is tilted so as to place the patient in dorsal or gynecological position, see Fig. 4:. By virtue of this construction when the patient is in this dorsal position the removable section may be withdrawn from beneath the thighs as these parts then require no support, and this brings the parts to be treated immediately over the basin and makes them easily accessible for both treatment and irrigation'purposes, at the same time avoiding the necessity of changing or shifting the position of the patient from the dorsal or reclining position when such position is once assumed. In this respect Iclaim a great advantage over the physicians tables heretofore in use.
This construction also provides quick and complete drainage'directly into the basin and thence by the waste pipe to a sewer connection. A strainer in the outlet of the basin permits the waste liquids to flow through into the waste pipe, which may be removed at will from the strainer.
,Having'thus described my invention what but arrests the solid material i I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a physicians table of the class described, the combination of a tilting topsupporting frame adapted to be adjusted relatively to the horizontal, a top on said tilting frame and adapted to receive the subject and provided at one end with an opening substantially the length of the thigh of a person (say about fourteen mounted inches) and substantially the width of the table-top, ing and on which the thighs of the subject a removable cover for said openmay rest when in substantially a sitting position on said table-top, a part of said table-top at the rear of said opening being fixed and adapted to receive and supportas a seat the buttocks of the subject when the cover of said opening is removed, an adjustable upwardly-swinging back-rest hinged at the rear of said fixed-part of the table-top, a basin mounted in said tilting frame beneath said opening in the table-top and pro vided with a waste outlet, and a water supply for said basin, substantially as set forth.
2. In a physicians table of the class described, the combination of a tilting topsupporting frame adapted to be adjusted relatively to the horizontal, a top mounted on said tilting frame and adapted to receive the subject and provided at one end with an opening substantially the length of the thigh of a person (say about fourteen inches) and substantially the width of the table-top, a removable cover for said open ing and on which the thighs of the subject may rest when in substantially a sitting position on said table-top, a part of said tabletop at the rear of said opening being fixed and adapted to receive and support as a seat the buttocks of the subject when the cover of said opening is removed, an adjustable upwardly-swinging back-rest hinged at the rear of said fixed-part of the table-top, a basin mounted in said tilting-frame be neath said opening in the table-top and provided with a waste outlet, a faucet for said basin, a water supply-pipe and flexible pipe connections between sald faucet and supplypipefor permitting the tilting of said tabletop substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of the two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK A. DENQUER.
