IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR IEXHIBITIVNG ADVERTISEMENTS.
- Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,62 l, dated March 14, 1876; application filed September 30, 1675.
useful Improvement in Apparatus for Exhibiting Views, Advertisements, 8150., produced upon a screen by means of a strong light and a suitable arrangement of lenses and transparent pictures or figures; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the letters of reference markedthereon, which form a part of this specification.
In the said drawing, Figure 1 denotes a side elevation of an apparatus embodying my improvement, and aranged for operation. Fig. 2 is a front elevation ofrthe same. Fig. 3 represents the apparatus in a closed or folded state.
In carrying out my invention I employ either a magic-lantern, sciopticon, or stereopticon, and a screen on which the pictures or designs are to be reproduced; and my invention consists in combining a magic-lantern, sciopticon or stereopticon, and a screen, with a carriage or frame mounted on wheels, so constructed and arranged as to secure the screen in a suitable position to receive and exhibit the views, 860., which may be thrown upon it, and maintain the lantern or pictureproducing instrument at the proper focal distance from the screen, and the line of light so directed as to fall upon the screen, and, at the same time, allow the apparatus and views formed upon the screen to be readily moved through the streets of a town or city.
The object of my invention is to furnish a ready and convenient means of exhibiting in different places, or in the streets of a city, while the apparatus is being passed through the same, views, advertisements, 860., produced upon a screen by means of magic lautern or other equivalent picture-producing instrument.
In the drawing, A represents a rectangular frame, each of whose ends is supported on wheels B. This frame is made in two parts,
and adjustable endwise, so that the wheels may be brought nearer together in case it may be desirable when the carriage or frame is being moved from place to place, and the picture-forming devices are not in use. (1 may be supposed to represent a stereopticon, or other picture-formin g instrument, provided with a light-lense, &c., of the ordinary construction. This device 0 is firmly secured upon one end of' the carriage or frame, and in the proper'position to throw the light upon the screen D, which is disposed at the opposite end of the carriage, or, if desirable, the device 0 may be so applied to the carriage as to be adjustable thereon, or it may be adjusted by moving the parts of the carriage. This screen consists of a frame, E, which is hinged to the frame A, and is provided with means by which a flat surface may be presented and preserved in a plane at right angles to the frame A, or turned down into parallelism therewith, as may be desirable. This screen I prefer to make in sections, a denoting the main or body part, and b b the Wings or side pieces, which are hinged to the body part, and provided with brace-rods, by which they may be brought into and maintained in the same vertical plane with the body part a, the same being as shown in Figs.
1 and 2.
The carriage or frame A is made so as to be adjustable to a greater or less length, as may be desired, and the picture-producing instrument is so fixed and arranged thereon, and with respect to the screen, that when the carriage or frame is extended to its maximum limit, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the figure or advertisement produced upon the screen shall be of the desired size and clearness.
I would remark that I do not claim either of the elements found in my apparatus, per 86, as I am aware that they are not new, but the combination of the picture-forming device, with a screen mounted upon the same frame, and provided with wheels, as shown, produces an apparatus of great utility, the same being portable and enabling the pictures, views, or advertisements produced upon the screen to be formed and viewed while the apparatus may be passing through the streets of a town or city. In this way advertisements,
'&c., may be brought to the notice of great numbers of persons.
When the apparatus is in use the rear or back face of the screen may have, if desired, any views or other designs affixedto it, orbe folded, so as to be compact for transportation, as shown in Fig. 2.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. As a means of exhibiting advertisements and pictures, the described apparatus, con- 7 sisting of the portable and adjustable frame, A, provided'at one end thereof with a pi'ctureproducing instrument, and at the other with a folding screen or frame, D E,substantially as shown and set forth.
. I 2.111 the apparatus described for exhibiting advertisements, the combination, with the folding screen or frame D E, of the hinged wags b b, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my 'owninvention, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
