UrvrrEE STATES PATENT. UFFICE CHARLES E. L. HOLMES, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN C URRY-COMBS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 174,528, dated March 7, 1876; application filed January 25, 1876.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OHARLEs E. L. HoLMEs, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented Improvements in Curry-Combs, of which the following is a specification:
The objects of my invention are to provide a secure, durable, and inexpensive attachment for the handles of curry-combs, to render the latter portable, and to afford a yielding rest for the hand over the back of the comb; and these objects I attain in the manner illustrated by the accompanying drawing, in which- 1 Figure 1 is a perspective view of a currycomb illustrating my improvements; Fig. 2, a side view, showing the parts in a different position; and Fig. 3, a sectional view, showing a modification. I I
The toothed bars A Act the comb are of any suitable construction, are arranged in any suitable manner, and are secured either to a frame or to knoeker-plates B B, the ends of which are bent down,- so as to form hollow lugs or eyes. or, arranged transversely, or thereabout, upon the plates, for the attachment of the ends of the rods b b, constituting the elevated frame, through the medium of which the ordinary side handle 0 is connected to the comb. The bars b b are of one piece of wire, bent to form a loop, the doubled end a: of which is'adapted to a socket, y, in the comb, and the rods b are bent to form the usual tang, which is driven, into the handle and secured in the ordinary manner. The ends of the rods turn freely in the eyes or lugs a, but are riveted, so that they cannot be drawn therefrom. A spring-pin, c, sliding in a recess in the ferrule c, is adapted to the loop at the end of the bent rod 1), and when passed into the same, as shown in Fig. 1, serves to connect the rod securely to the handle, and to retain all the parts in their positions, when the comb may be used in the ordinary manner.
Upon withdrawing the pin the handle and rods b may be turned back upon the comb, and the rods b may be depressed to the position shown in Fig. 2, reducing theeomb to that compact shape requisite for transportation, or for packing in a saddle-bag or other contracted space.
It will be apparent that the handle may be connected adjustably to the comb by various devices.
In Fig. 3 a bent tang is shown, hung between the eyes a a, and secured in its position by a button, f, which may be turned to a position to overlap a lip, d,'at the lower end of the tang; or, instead of this,.stout coiled springs b may be connected to the lugs a, or tothe studs 12 at the back of the comb, and
detaehably to a hook, h, on .the tang or handle, retaining the latter in its position until detached from the hook, and affording a yielding support for the hand in grasping the comb over the back.
By arranging the connections for the handle at the front and rear edges, instead of at the sides or at the top of the comb, as heretofore, the liability to injury resulting from placing them at the sides, and of discomfort from placing them at the top, are avoided.-
It will be apparent that the lugs or studs a a may be at the front and rear edges of cast or stamped frames or knoeker-plates, or any other construction by which the attachment is made at the front and rear edges of the comb may be adopted.
Without limiting myself to the means shown for hing-ing the handle to'the comb, or for connecting the bars I) to the handle, I claim- 1. A curry comb having studs or .projections or a at the front and rear edges, for the attachment of rods leading to the handle, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in a curry-comb, of toothed bars and knocker-plates, having at theends hollow studs or eyes, arranged transversely, or thereabout, for the reception of the rods 1) 11 as set forth.
3. A curry-comb provided with a side handle, (J, hung to the comb so as to be turned down upon the latter, as specified.
4. The combination of the comb, the bars b, jointed to the comb, and the adjustable handle, provided with appliances for connecting it to the bars 12, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the curry-comb, the handle 0. and bars or rods extending from the handle and terminating and connected to the comb at the front and rear edges.
6. The spring-connections extending from the "handle or tang to the back of the comb,
and constituting a yielding support for the hand, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' O. E. L. HOLMES.
