LACQUER STENCIL Filed Feb. 27. 1928 2 Sheets-Sheet 2 INVENToR.
A TTORNEY;
Patented Jan. 21, 1930 PATENT FFECE ALTHERTON L. GRAY, OF LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA LACQUER STENCIL Application filed yFebruary 27, 192` This invention relates to a stencil device adapted for stencilling bodies, such as sign boards, with indicia. It appertains especially to a device for application to a background member to cover the portions on which the indicia is to be marked and over which coloring or tinting matter may be projected or applied to the background. Thus, the background member may be provided with the indicia areas shielded and the remainder of the background coated with the ultimate display background material. The invention is particularly adaptable to the production ot' sign boards and the like by use of a spray gun. Lacquer has been found to be applicable to such work. Letters or indicia which are to be marked thereon may be imprinted by covering the'board by a stencil of the character hereinafter described 29 and spraying the lacquer suitably tinted over the remaining portion of the board. In such devices, the stencil indicia must rest flush against the background to obtain an outline o which is sharp. There must also be sufficient D clearance about the stencil indicia and support therefor so as not to obstruct the impingement of the spray.
The objects of this invention are iirst, to provide a stencil device having indicia mem- 39 bers or characters capable ot being mounted on a support with clearance to provide unobstructed application of the background tinting matter; second, to provide a support for each character which is clear oi' the latter for passage of the spray; third, to provide a support arranged for interchange ot' detachable character; fourth, to provide a frame to which the support may be attached for convenient application to the background member 'of the stencil character; and fth, to provide a device ot' the character described having novel features of construction, whereby a simple, durable, inexpensive, structure capable of convenient manipulation by the operator thereo is obtained.
Other objects and advantages will be made fully apparent from the following specification considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, in which:
Fig. 1 is a plan view of a complete stencil Serial No. 257,163.
device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a 'l'ront elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a section on an enlarged scale as seen on the line 83 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of one of the stencils.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, a base frame is provided consisting of front and rear bars marked 5 and 6 respectively joined by cross bars 7, 8, 9 and 10. These bars are preferably of angle irons and serve as a. base. The cross bars S and 9 are provided with slots 11, 12, 13 and 1d to receive bolts for adjustably securing thereto bolts for spacing bars 15 and 16. The spacing bars serve to hold in position the background board 17 which is to be marked. The base 'frame is preferably provided with a plate 18 coextensive therewith and having slots registering with the slots in the cross bars. The construction is such as to provide for the adjustable location ot the spacing bars so that boards oi' the same widths may be disposed between the holding bars without further adjustment by inserting them from the side or from the top.
-linged to the base 'frame at the rear bar G is a rectangular supporting frame comprising side bars 19 and 20 and i'ront and rear bars 21 and 22. This rectangular f aine is preferably 'formed of angle ironsso that when closed over the base frame the legs of the angles will overlap. This provides for a construction such that the stencil supporting l'rame may be swung over the base `trarne and theboard to be stencilled. To hold the supporting Jrame upon the base frame in closed position, sash locks 23 are provided.
Mounted upon the side members 19 and 20 o'l the supporting trame are brackets, each comprising a pair of angles 24 and 25 with their upright legs spaced apart and having elongated holes. Outstanding from each or' the side members is a bracket 2G serving as a support for a tension spring 29. Extending lengthwise ot the supporting frame and slidably disposed between the brackets legs 24 and Q5 is a supporting bar 27. The bar is oit such length that it overhangs the side members and is held in position by pins 28 extending therethrough and into the elonlil gated slots in the brackets. Tension springs 29 are secured to the ends of the bar and to the outstanding legs of brackets Q6. Thus, the supporting bar is resiliently mounted upon the supporting frame. The bar serves to hold the stencil characters indicated generally by 30, one of which is shown in Fig. 4. The particular character shown is a letter C. It has a body 31 with an under face which will lie flat or flush with the upper face of the board 17. It is essential that the outline of the letter be distinct. It is found preferable to recess the underface of the letters to this end. Upstanding from the body of each letter is a. lug for spacing the letter from the supporting bar. A slot 33 is provided in the lug so that the latter may embrace lthe supporting bar, and a screw serves for securely holding the stencil to the bar.
Having selected suitable characters and attached them to the bar with proper spacing therebetween, the device is ready for operation. The board 17 having its display face coated with a suitable tinting for the characters desired is )laced between the spacing bars 15 and 1G. 'he supporting frame is then swung downwardly to overlap the base frame and locked in position by the sash fasteners 23. The resilient mounting of the supporting bar is such as to insure the stencil characters adjusting themselves to a firm and flush Contact with the face of the board and thereby to cover the areas marking the characters. A spray of lacquer or like matter carrying the tinting for the ultimate display background for the sign is directed over the face of the board. This causes the board to be coated with the display background over all of the area except that covered by the characters. It will be noted that there is sutlicient clearance between the supporting frame and its parts and the characters to permit the spray to be directed to all of the board, except that covered by the characters. This is done without any necessity of skillful manipulation. After the lacquer has dried sufficiently, the supporting frame is unlocked from the base frame and swung to its open position and the sign board removed.
Vhat I claim is:
1. A stencil device comprising a frame for mounting on a body to be stencilled, a support hinged thereto so as to be swung to and from said body including a bar extending along said frame and resiliently secured thereto, stencil characters having faces formed to lie flush against the body to be stencilled, said characters having lateral projections, means to detachably connect said characters to said bar at said projections for maintaining said members clear of said bar whereby to permit the projection of coloring matter around said support and characters.
2. A stencil device comprising a frame for mounting on a body to be stencilled, a support hinged thereto so as to be swung to and from said body including a bar extending along said frame and resiliently secured thereto, stencil characters having faces formed to lie flush against the body to be stencilled, said characters having lateral projections connecting them to said bars so as to maintain them clear thereof whereby to permit the projection of coloring matter around said support and characters.
3. A stencil device comprising a frame for mounting on a body to be stencilled, a support hinged thereto so as to be swung to and from said body including a bar extending along said frame and resiliently secured thereto, stencil characters having faces formed to lie flush against the body to be stencilled, said characters having laterally projecting ears to embrace said bar, means to detachably secure said ears to said bar, said characters being clear of said body whereby to permit the projection of coloring matter around said support and characters.
4. A stencil device comprising a frame for mounting on a body to be stencilled including a bar resiliently secured thereto, stencil characters having faces formed to lie flush against the body to be stencilled, said characters being detachably mounted on said bar so as to project therefrom and be clear thereof whereby to permit the projection of colei'- ing matter around said support and characters.
5. A stencil device comprising a frame for mounting on a body to be stencilled including a bar resiliently secured thereto, stencil characters having faces formed to lie flush against a body to be stencilled, said characters having lateral projections, means to detachably connect said characters to said bar at said projections and to maintain said characters clear of said bar whereby to permit the projection of coloring matter around said support and characters.
6. A stencil device comprising a frame for mounting on a body to be stencilled including a bar resiliently secured thereto, stencil characters having faces formed to lie flush against a body to be stencilled, said characters having laterally projecting ears to embrace said bar` means to detachably secure said ears to said bar, said characters being clear of said body whereby to permit the projection of coloring matter around said support and characters.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 5th day of December, 1927. i
