Be it known that I, VILHo VINSGHR- ING, subject of "the Republic' ofi Finland", residing at thecity'Viipuri, inFinland, have invented a certainnew and useful Improvement :in Painters* Easels,of which" the following is a speciiication, reference being had therein to the accompanying` drawing.

The present invention "relates to painters easels and 'its object,ffbrief1y`stated, -is the provision of apractica-l and'simple implement of' the class indicated which is designed forfattachment tothe backand shoulders oi' the user, so thatits employment" is notrewhich `isadaptedto be strapped tothe person ofthe user, and a carrier "frame whereon the board or panel which receives vthe canvas, paper or other" sheet to be painted on isiast'ened the latter lframe being 'shiftable toward or 'from the'supportii1gy frame so as to vary its angle oi inclination `and thereby adjust it l'toworking conditions. The devices provided for retaining the carrier frame in adjusted positionmay, if desired, be utilized as a paint-box support, `and other and further improved features are likewise involved in the inventioniand will be explained in the course of the following description.

The other main element ofthe'easel, viz: the carrier traine,` is likewiseotskeleton construction and frustoLtrliangulai-lshape and comprises two inwardly#converging side bars 7 and aconnecting crosslpiece" 8; the

bars 7 being attached attheir inner or lower ends to the bars 1 of the supporting frame by hinges 6, and being removably secured by pivoted hook-and-keeper connections 9 to the cross-piece S, which latter has its ends fitted in sockets formed in the edge faces 'oi the bars 7. The said bars 7 are provided with suitable devices 14 for retaining in place thereon a board or panel 14 to receive the canvas, paper or other sheet to be painted on, certain of such devices being adjustable on the bars to enable them to be used with boards or panels of different dimensions.

lt will be apparent from the foregoing that the carrier frame may be swung toward or from the supporting frame to vary the inclination ot the board or panel 14. To retain the carrier trame in adjusted position, suitable fastening devices are provided which may comprise, shown, a pair ci metal catches 11 which are pivoted at one end to the sides 1 of the supporting frame and are formed adjacent the other end with a series of spaced notches 12 for interchangeable engagement with a cross-rod 13; said rod connecting the inner portions of the frame sides 7. These catches or fasteners 11 may conjointlv serve as a support for a paint-box 15, which may be secured thereto in any desired manner and may be equipped with a water cup 16 which extends thro-ugh an opening in the bottom of the box.

In the construction above described, it will be observed that the sides 7 of the movable carrier frame are hinged directlv to the sides 1 of the supporting frame. lf preferred, however, and as illustrated in Figs. 7-9, the said members T may, instead, be pivoted at their inner or lower ends, as at 18, to the adjacent ends of a pair of short bars or links 17 which, in turn, are fastened by the hinges 6 to the frame sides 1; such arrangement enabling the carrier frame to be moved bodily toward or from the painter, in addition to its pivotal movement for adjusting its inclination. In other respects, the V'orm of the invention disclosed in the figures specified is identical with the first form and, hence, requires no further explanation.

l claim as my invention 1. A painters easel7 con'iprising a supporting frame adapted to be disposed in vertical position against the breast olt the user; a carrier frame jirojectingforwardlf,v from the supporting` frame and pivotally connected therewith at its rear end to swing in a vertical plane and thereby vary its inclination with relation to the supporting frame; means fo-r retaining the carrier :trame in adjusted position: a work holder mounted On the carrier frame; and straps attached at opposite ends to the upper and lower portions of the supportingl frame to pass over the shoulders and across the back of the user.

2. A painters easel, comprising a supporting frame and a carrier frame each embodying a pair of spaced side members and at least one connecting cross-piece therebetween, the side members of the carrier frame being pivotally related at their inner ends to those of the supporting frame to enable a swinging movement of the carrier frame: a work holder mounted on the carrier frame; a cross-rod connecting the side members of the carrier frame adjacent their said inner ends; and a pair of notched fasteners pivoted at one end to the side members of the supportingl frame for interchangeable engagement with said cross-rod, to retain the carrier frame in adjusted position.

3. A collapsible painters easel comprising a supporting frame and a carrier frame each embodying a pair of spaced side members and at least one connecting cross-piece therebetween, the side members of the carrier frame being pivo-tally related at their inner ends to those of the supporting frame to enable a swinging movement of the carrier frame, a work holder mounted on the carrier frame, and means for retaining sai/l carrier frame in adjusted position; each cross-pieee having' its ends removably fitted in sockets formed in the edge faces of the corresponding frame sides, and releasablc fastening devices connecting said crosspieees and frame sides when the easel is set up and connecting the corresponding frame sides directlj7 together when the easel is collapsed.
