Be. it known that I, FRAN POL'SL'EY, of Jackson 0. H., in the county of Jackson and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machine for De scribing and Cutting the Regular Curves, of which the following is a specification:

The object of this invention is to furnish an improved machine for describing and cutting circles, ellipses, parabolas, and hyperbolas, which shall be simple in construction, convenient in use, andreliable in operation. k
The invention consists in the combination of the table, the shaft provided with the curved bar, the pivoted and slotted cone, provided with the lug and the set-screw, the adjustable arm provided with the wheel, and the spring, with each other and with the frame; in the combination of the uprights, the pivoted socket-frame, and the adjustable bar with the frame, the table, theadjustable cone, theadjustable arm, and the spring; and in the combination 'of the grooved table and the adjustable blocks, provided with the pins, with the shaft that carries the adjustable cone, as hereinafter fully described.
A represents the frame of the machine. B are ways attached to the middle forward part of the frame A, and in which slides a block, 0, that serves as a bearing for the shaft D. To the upper end of the shaft D is attached a circular table, E, which may be revolved by hand, or by gearing, or by a band passing around a pulley, F, attached to the said shaft D. The lower end of the shaft D, or an arm formed upon said lower end, passes into a slot in the inverted cone G,Xttl1d its lower end is pivoted in and to said cone by a pin, both slot and pin passing through the axis of said cone Gr. To the shaft D, just above the cone G, is attached, or upon it is formed, a curved bar, H, which passes through a slot in alug, 9, formed upon the base of the said cone, and provided with a set-screw, I, so that the cone may clamped to thebarH and held sec'urelyinYany position into which it may be adjusted. Upon the arm H or lug geithe'r or both-is formed a scale to enablethe cone G to be adjustedaccurately-and easily at any desired angle. J is a small wheel, the edge of which rests against the cone G, and which is pivoted to the end of the horizontal arm of the right-angled bar K, the upright arm of which rests against a cross-plate, a, attached to the frame A, and is secured adj ustably to said plate by a clamping-bolt, L, which passes through a slot in said arm. Upon the beveled edge of a vertical slot formed through the plate a, and upon the part of the upright arm of the bar K seen through said slot, are formed scales of division-marks, to enable the arm K to be accurately and easily adjusted. The cone G is held against the wheel J of the arm K by a spring, M, one end of which is connected with the frame A, and its other end is connected with the sliding block 0, that carries the shaft D and its cone G. To the side bars of the rear part of the frame A are attached uprights N, to the upper ends of which is pivoted a frame, 0, one or both the journals of which are provided with a'hand-nut, 0, to enable said frame 0 to be conveniently clamped in place when adjusted. In the side bars of the frame 0 are formed sockets, through which is slid a bar, P,whicl1 is secured in place, when adjusted, by a set-screw, 19 The bar P has a scale of division-marks formed upon it to enable it to be easily and accurately adjusted. In the forward end of the bar P is formed a socket provided with a set-screw, 10 to receive and hold a pencil for describing the curves, or a knife, saw, or other cutter for cnttin g them. In using the machine to describe a curve the cone G is so adjusted that when revolved the edge of the wheel J may describe the required curve upon the face of .the said cone. The paper or other material upon which the curve is to be drawn is secured to the table E, and the pencil is adjusted to rest upon, it. Then, by turning the table E, the point of the pencil' will describe the desired curve. When the curves are to be cut the table E is detached and replaced by the table Q, which has two dovetailed grooves formed across its face at right angles with each other, and intersecting eachother at thecenter of the table. 'In these grooves-are inserted four dovetailed blocks, R, to the upper side of each of which are attached two pins, S, at a little distance apart, to
receive the object to be cut and hold it while being cut, the saidblocks B being so adjusted that tlie'cutter, while cutting the curve, may
pass between the said pins S.
Having thus described my iiivention,'I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Pat ent D, provided with' the curved bar H, thepivoted and slotted cone G, provided with the lug g and the set-screw I, the adjustable arm K, provided with the wheel J, and the spring M, with each other and with the frame A, substantiall v-as herein shown and-described;
