IMPROVEMEN'l IN GAGES FOR CUTTING BIS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 174,490, dated March 7, 1876; application filed January21f1876.
To all 'whom 'it may concern Be itknown that I, ELIJAH S. GOON, of Watertown, J e'ersou county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting-Gages for Cutting Bias, and for yother purposes, of which the following is a specification This invention principally relates to instrunents for cutting goods bias, or in a diagonal I combine a gage or guide and a holder for the scissors, the latter being so arranged that when the scissors are fitted to it they will be at that angle to the line of feed of the goods requisite to produce the bias cut. I mount the gage or guide and the scissors-holder on a base strip or plate, preferably in such manner that either one or both may be adjusted thereon so as to increase or decrease at pleas ure the distance between them, and 011 the base strip or plate I form scales of division,

The accompanying drawing represents a bias-cutter embodying my invention `in its preferred form.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the instrument. Fig. 2 is a view of the combined gage or guide and presser detached. Fig. 3 is a like view of the holder.
The base strip or plate is shownv at A. It is a narrow strip of sheet metal, slotted for nearly its length, as indicated at a. In this slot are fitted the gage and guide B and the -holder C, each of which is provided with projecting lips b that clasp between them the metal bounding the longer edges of the slot. When the parts are mounted they can be moved back and forth in the slot, andyet hold the plate tightly enough to secure their remaining in place at any point to which they may be adjusted.
The part which serves to gage or guide the work is a shoulder, c. The presser hereinbefore mentioned I prefer, for convenience sake, to form in one piece with the gage or guide. It consists oi a long springtongue,l), which extends beyond the shoulder c, and bears with a yielding pressure against the baseplate A.
The holder C (shown separately in Fig. 3,) is provided with a shelf, d, that carries or is formed with atapering socket, e, whose sides approach each other somewhat nearer at the top than at the bottom. This socket is intended to receive the point of the lower blade of the scissors, which, owing to the form of the socket, can be jammed or wedged, and tightly held therein. When the instrument is thus iitted to the scissors it is carried by them, and the operator-is free to use the hand not employed in holding and workin g the scissors to feed and draw along the goods.
The socket, as shown in Fig. 4, which is a plan of the instrument, stands at an angle to the shoulder c, or line of feed of the goods.
To use the instrument, the goods are iirst cut along the outer edge to the bias required. They are then inserted in the instrument (the holder and gage having rst been properly adjusted) passing between the presser and the plate, with the bias edge against the shoulder or guide c. The operator then, holding in one hand the scissors, (with the instrument ou the end of the sa1ne,) cuts the goods, and, with the other hand, feeds or draws along the goods. The scissors, being set at an angle to the line of feed or travel, will, of course, cut the goods bias.
This device is designed to be held in the hand, but, if desired, it may be held by a setscrew or clamp to any fixed support.v The structure, also, of the special device for holding together the scissors and the gage-bar may also be varied. For instance, in lieu of the dovetailed tapering socket, a clamp, clutch, or its equivalent', adjustable upon the gagebar or base-plate, may be used.
For bias cutting, for which the instrument l is principally designed, as above noted, it is requisite that the scissors-holder should have a certain oblique angle of inclinationto the base-plate or gage-bar; but if it be desired to make a straight cut, then the scissors-holder, adjustable as before with respect to the gage-bar or base-plate, may stand at rightv angles thereto.

Having described my invention, what I claim', and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows l 1. The base plate or gage-bar, and the adjustable gage or guide thereon, in combination with the scissors or shears-h older attach ed to and adjustable on said bar, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, with the base-plate, of the gage or guide for the goods, and the scissors-holder placed at an angle to the line of feed or travel of the goods, substantially. as

. 3. The gage or guide, and the scissors-holder, arranged relatively to each other, as dey scribed, and adjustable, to increase or lessen the distance between them, substantially for the purposes set forth.

6. The combination of the slotted base plate having scales of division thereon, the scissorsholder, the gage or guide, and the presser attached to and moving with said guide, for operation as set forth.
