Description

J. B. SHAW.
PIA-N0 LID-SUPPORT.
No.174:,310.- Patented Feb .29, 1876.
INVENTOR WiTNESSE I AM Wag ATTORNEYS -N.PETF RS, PHOTO-UTHOGRAPHER, WASHINGTON D C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAGOB B. SHAW, on CAMBRIDGE, MASSAOHUSETTS.
IMPROVEMENT IN PIANO-LID SUPPORTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 174,310, dated February 29, 1876; application filed December 11, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB B. SHAW, of Cambridge, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Piano-Cover Supports; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same,
- reference being had to the annexed drawings,
making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon. I
The figure of the drawings is a representation of a side elevation of my piano-cover support.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby the front and hinged portion of a piano-top may be raised and thrown back without concealing book's, sheet-music, and
v other articles upon the piano; and the nature of the invention consists in a triangular frame, one or more of which are placed between the stationary portion of a piano-top and the hinged portion thereof when it is thrown up and back, whereby music and other articles are also the inclined edge a for the purpose of preventing the finished surface of the piano from being defaced. The rear edge of this frame is vertical to its base preferably, and is made in the shape of a pillar, 0/, having a broad base, I, by means of which it is'the-less liable to tilt over. In. practice the interior of the supporter may be filled with scroll-work, as shown in the drawings, or it may be open. It may, however, be closed, and plain or closed and ornamented if I so elect, and insteadof being made of wood it may be of cast metal. It is evident that when the hingedportion of the piano top is thrown up and then let down upon the supporter, the latter being on the fixed part of the top,-thatbooks, baskets, and the like upon the latter will be'protected from injury, and may be readily got at.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As a new article of manufacture, the triangular piano-top supporter herein described,
adapted to stand alone, and having two cushioned surfaces, substantially as and for .the' purpose set'forth.
V In testimony that I claim the above, I have of two witnesses hereunto subscribed my name in the presence J ACOB B. SHAW,
Witnesses! LEANDER M. HANNUM, AMos WHITTEMOBE.
