This invention relates broadly to cans and pails, and more specifically to a can or pall of slip cover type. L
The primary object of the invention is to provide a can of the character employed as containers for non-liquid products, having a readily removable slip cover and embodying sim le means whereby the cover is retained agamst chance displacement upon the can body. s
In describing the invention'in detail, reference is hereln had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a to plan view of the invention, partly in bro en section;
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2, Fig. 1; and
Figure 3 is a detail section on line 3-3, Fig. 2.
eferring to said drawings, 1 designates a can body which has an inwardl turned roll 2 formed on its upper end. gaid roll is adapted to receive in seated relation thereto the rim portion 30f a slip cover 4 which has a circumferential depending flange 5 for closely embracing the can body adjacent to its said upper end.
Provided in the roll 2 inwardly of the vertical plane of the body 1 is a pluralit ofsimilar relatively spaced recesses 6 which are referably formed b cuttin away relative y short lengths of the meta? of the roll, thus to form vertical passageways through which 'may unobstructedly pass lugs formed in similarly spaced relation on the under side of the can cover 4.
The rim portion 3 of said can cover 4 is shaped to form a downwardl facing channel which, as shown at the aft in Fig. 2, is adapted to receive snugly therein the roll 2 of t e can body, said. 0 annel being defined on its outer side by ,said roll, said cover having laterally 7 Jectmg lu s formed in the wall thereo adthe depending 1928. Serial No. 281,726.
that the metal of the cover is slightly stretched atand adjacent to said lugs.
In applying the cover, the lugs are entered within the can body through the recesses 6, following which the cover is slightly rotated relative to the can bod tioning the lugs in closely under ying relation to the roll 2 at points located laterally with respect to said recesses, as shown in the drawings. In such position, the cover is efiectuall retained against chance displacement. anifestly, removal and re-application of the cover may be conveniently effected by hand without marring of or injury to either the can or the cover. The exterior surface of the flange 5 ma be knurled or for posi-' otherwise roughened to faci 'tate hand rotation of the cover.
What is claimed In a can or pail, an inwardly turned per end, said roll ha plurality of recesses, which recesses extend only part way throu h said roll, leaving a continuous portion 0 the roll at the outer peripheral ed 0 of the container body, and a slip cover or said can body, said cover having a depending flange extendin down along the outer wall of the can bod and having a central depressed ortion adapted to fit within and to form a isa container body having terminal roll at its upg formed therein a channel adapted to receive jacent sai roll, which lugs are adapted to pass through the recesses and upon a turnin of the cover relative to the body to be placed beneath said roll for securing said cover to said body.
